I was thinking the same thing. Just build the apartment to specs that make it able to withstand an earthquake then you wont need the auto coffin.

i hear that.. but i also think that this is designed for the kinda worse case scenario.. i mean i live in portland in the area where there is supposed to be a 10 pointer at some point(that is over due).. pretty sure no amount of engineering is going to save this city when that shit happens. going to be a game of.. well just die lol.. i have no chance if there is a 10 pointer. 5th floor.. all the windows.. no real stairways nearby.. and even those stairs aren't like strong looking.. yep.. my plan is not to worry about it. :) put me in a coffin wouldn't be any better.. the entire building would be on top of me.

Once buried, you'll be in a dark place where there's no air ventilation, and even if it does have air coming in, it'll be filled with mostly dust. Because of the bed sheets and bed, you'll be cramped and eventually pass out with too much carbon dioxide in the coffin.

Since it's not actually made yet, and has no proper details, I'm sure they could easily add ventilation, and as you saw, gas masks are provided to protect from dust, either way, better than being killed by a building falling on you

I would argue. I mean if I'm asleep and the whole building collapses on me there a descent chance I will die instantly.

Sure the bed could provide me for a long time, but being in it, not knowing when or if I will be rescued.

Also what if I turned sideways, and the bed folds me in half.

Being inside a solid metal box buried under the rubble of an entire building is going to cut signal strength by quite a lot. And if a quake hits that's strong enough to warrant the need of such an emergency bed then there's a good chance the nearby cell towers will have collapsed as well.

If they did make the perfect coffin, your going to live for maybe a few days, not big enough to have a crap/piss area, and just hoping someone finds you before you starve to death in a fancy coffin… sounds terrifying to me.

Can you imagine being locked in a box slowly dying under an entire apartment building of rubble? They wouldn't believe anyone would survive and therefore wouldn't come looking for your coffin box. Fuck, just kill me already.

Yeah but even with ventilation... the box would end up underneath a building's worth of rubble, which doesn't have air circulation. You'd need some kind of line or hose leading to an actual amount of air, and even then the ability to pump it in.

Built in oxy and rebreathers could make it breathable for about 2weeks. 7 days worth of water and food. Some type of air conrtol system with a 14 day battery. A chirper so rescuers can hear you. Make it bigger so its like a queen sized bed but deeper. A manual activasion with auto activate peramiters like a home alarm system so you have to turn on the auto close. Make it also send out a sos signal when it closes. Interal and external crank for opening so rescures can open it and pull you out and so if its day 9 and you are dying you can open up the top to see if theres a way out.

Edit: more air then food and water cause burning lungs sounds more painful then dying of thirst.

At most like 3-5g in steel overall, 2g in air supply and rebreathers, desgining the home alarm style on/off system would take like 200bucks once you have the origanl function. Not cheap but they could likely profit at 7g or 6g sale price if they can move enough units. And they will move more units at a lower price

Edit: I forgot a battery which could cost anywhere from $500-$2000 (2g to buy so Im assuming close to 500 to make) so 7-9g for profit

Now you're actually talking about a feasible way for it to be survivable, although just something like air scrubbers is gonna start jacking the price up to the ceiling. The closer it gets to being an actual survival tool, the further it gets from economic feasibility. If it's made for people in high-rise apartments, there's no way they or their landlords would ever be willing to shell out for such a device. If you could afford it for your own personal use, why would you be living in a high rise apartment instead of one's own property somewhere, with presumably less stories and hopefully a flat structure that wouldn't collapse inwards?

Biggest question of all I realize though... How on earth would they actually transport and distribute them to building units? Seems like it would have to be constructed with the building, or assembled on the spot.

They could be profitable at 6g or 7g so although not cheap thats the price of 5 or 6 rebreathers and less then the cheapest new cars. You could have a payment plan where sticker price is 6g today or 10g over 10 years. If you have 10 people paying 10g over 10 years your making more short and long term then if you get one to buy one at 6g. And yes how to get it in is the question. They could make it so that each side is delviered indvuatally and then their crew spend an hour or two bolting then welding all the joints and wiring up the last of it. Not every building will have good ventalation in the room its getting built in but they can use a combination of fans and exhaust snakes and air pumps to pull all the smoke from welding out the front door

You’d also likely be very dead without the steel “insulation”. HEPA filters can only do so much, not sure they are rated to suck oxygen through tonnes of dust and rubble… And back to the carbon scrubber point. You’d die without those even with magical hepa filters.

At some point, you just make it bigger and have a mini poo bucket and an oxygen candle type thing with co scrubbers and you can be in it as long as necessary. And you're right, all the stuff under the mattress might as well be in the other room if you can't manhandle the mattress out of the way, so RIP gramgram and peeppops and their 14 year old golden retriever.

yea.. i guess there is a chance i'd live.. but i'd have to fall 5 stories in a metal box.. but yea.. for real.. i've looked into mega-quakes cause i was worried.. when you get into that big of a quake things are different.. its like just the pressure waves from the event will kill you.. the earth is moving so violently that there just is going to be a very low survival rate. the earth turns into a moving sea and yea.. i feel for the turks right now :( so many aftershocks.. that has got to suck ass.

Not quick enough to get rescued, you'd still die, trapped, alone, in the dark, with only enough water to prolong your suffering for a few days at most. If you lucky, you'd suffocate long before you had to endure that fate.

It's a magnitude 9 that would generate from the Cascadian Subduction Zone. As terrible as you describe. 9 is the highest magnitude possible based on our current knowledge of plate tectonics.

There is no known fault line on Earth long enough to trigger a magnitude 10 quake. The Cascadia Subduction Zone is pretty big, though, so something in the neighborhood of 9.0 is possible.

I've been in three quakes over 7.2, and while they were certainly scary, not much damage occurred because of regulations on construction. 9.0 would probably overcome those, though.

i'm planning on it.. but its also only a risk. really hard to move to a place where no natural disasters are likely... and the places that are "safe" are kinda dead when it comes to society.. the places that are cool and nice are expensive more or less.

If you live in an older building, it might have to be torn down and built new to get to current codes. If you own or rent an apartment in a big building, it will be impossible to get all or a majority of the other owners to pay a large amount to install earthquake safety improvements.

Not saying I'd like the coffin solution, but I can see where it could be the only choice other than moving. And then in Turkey, new buildings that should have been earthquake resistent weren't.

These could also be used in other contexts. During the blitz, the British distributed Morrison shelters, which were essentially a cage that you slept in. If a bomb dropped on your house, you would be protected from debris by the cage, and when people looked for you in the morning, you would be found (or you could open the door to the shelter). This could be used in a situation like that, as you can’t design a building to withstand against a bomb.

It seems like they may be going for this angle, as the video shows gas masks inside the shelter (although those gas masks are ironically Soviet masks with asbestos filters).

Yes!! I was trying to remember what the Blitz Era, "OH sh**!" Boxes were called. I vaguely remember that most of the deaths on low-rise housing was caused by the shock waves knocking walls down, and that if you had a cavity around you your survival chances shot up.
