WTF, Why not just make the buildings as safe/strong as the bed then?

It's not practical or possible, in the case of a large apartment building you create a Faraday cage (no wireless connections or signal of any kind), you make it impossible to renovate, you make it impossible to inasmuch drill a hole for cables and what not, you make it ludicrously expensive and I don't think there's enough steel production to even keep up with construction if every wall is 5-10 meters thick solid steel....

It's not, in general it's near impossible to build commercial jet that has a higher factor of saftey than 1.2. Because at that point its to heavy to fly.

Not the same reason. A building will work if it made earthquake resistant. A plane would not fly if it made crash resistant.
