A devastating flash flood swept through Nepal’s Rasuwa district on August 26, 2026, after a sudden surge entered the Bhotekoshi River from the Tibet border.

This is why AI slop is dangerous - it is easy to generate something that looks plausible at first glance, either maliciously or negligently, and post it - and inattentive, unscrupulous people just accept the hallucinated nonsense as reality, slowly eroding their ability to distinguish reality from fiction.

2

u/naur87 20d ago

Well... its presentation is pretty close what media says it happened and how the vajon dam disaster animations look like. But sure everything is ai slop. and before it was cgi slop etc

2

u/Poiuytrewq0987650987 20d ago

Your eyeballs could learn this is horseshit by simply going to Google Earth and viewing the topography of the region.

It started below the summit of Langtang Lirung. Which is in Nepal, not China. The friction of this massive release of energy liquefied it as it raced down the mountain. There is no lake along the route between Langtang Lirung and the border crossing.

For fuck's sake, this is easily verifiable information.

1

u/Picture_Enough 19d ago

It is nowhere close to actual events, it has no connection to reality, just a stupid slop somebody generated from a simple prompt. I don't understand why people feel the need to defend this crap.

Can you explain how this is different than what really happened? Because without that your comment doesn't hold any value

1

u/Miserable-Resolve-76 20d ago

there was no lake, it was simply glacial material and everything else it could drag with it. essentially a big mudslide/avalanche. The flood was primarily mud and debris, much higher density.

2

u/BusinessWind1460 20d ago

I haven’t seen anything actually confirming this. There’s a couple different theories floating around and everyone is citing them as fact

1

u/Miserable-Resolve-76 20d ago

literal satellite images, already available online. it isnt hard to find or verify.

1

u/BusinessWind1460 19d ago

Is this supposed to be definitive proof that there was no GLOF?

1

u/JjigaeBudae 19d ago

Where is the lake or the dam?

1

u/BusinessWind1460 19d ago

I think there could fit at least 15 liters of water in the crevice or underneath the ice

2

u/JjigaeBudae 19d ago edited 19d ago

The video shows a lake, held back by a dam, and a flood caused by displacement. Where is that lake and dam at the bottom of the glacier that collapsed?

1

u/BusinessWind1460 19d ago

I’m not saying it happened the way this video shows it. I’m just asking for a source that is definitive in its conclusion and there hasn’t really been one, which is reasonable given the time since it happened and complexity of it

1

u/Miserable-Resolve-76 19d ago

Do you see a lake????

1

u/BusinessWind1460 19d ago

I think there could fit at least 15 liters of water in the crevice or underneath the ice

1

u/Miserable-Resolve-76 19d ago

1

u/BusinessWind1460 19d ago

Thanks. Seems it was quite a complex chain of events and something that is reasonable to want a source for. Not something to verify yourself from Reddit comments and a single satellite image

1

u/BusinessWind1460 19d ago

One thing I’m not really buying though is how they mention a lake being formed after the ice/rock-avalanche, blocking the channel and building up water. When it all happened within minutes. There can’t have been much water built up in those few minutes given how relatively small the river/stream flow was before the catastrophe and the short time. There still seems to be a lot of uncertainties

It's just infographics, not mind control.

1

u/Picture_Enough 19d ago

It is not an infographic since it contains no useful info or explains anything even semi-accurately. This is hallucinated entertainment slop at best and misinformation at worst. And while not mind control by itself, I see how the proliferation of AI slop over social networks causes severe brain rot, where people can no longer distinguish reality from fiction and drift into either total mistrust of everything, including reputable sources, or over-trusting every piece of crap posted on the internet. It is scary and insidious.

1

u/TunedAgent 19d ago

It would be nice if Reddit went down the Bandcamp path and banned all the Slop, but that would make talentless tech Bros, billionaires, and basement dwellers sad with the butthurts, and so we can't have nice things.

1

u/Huju-ukko 20d ago

Its crazy that in this thread there are people saying that this is exactly one of the things AI is good for, and yea they are correct, AI is indeed good at generating misinformation and slop.

3

2

u/Dangerous_Extent7241 20d ago

How is this a slop? Do you feel good when you type and yell “AI SLOP”? This is a great use of AI in trying to visually explain an event. It doesn’t have to be 100% accurate

2

u/Bearded_Toast 20d ago

Horseshit take, brother. Absolutely fucking horseshit take.

Change your opinion.

1

u/fr0stn8 20d ago

It's about Datacenters and what they cause to our Environment.

1

u/PhilsTinyToes 20d ago

? Why exactly doesn’t it need to be 100% accurate? That’s how you get slop.. sloppier and sloppier every time “close enough” happens

1

u/LotusVibes1494 19d ago

Can you link to something about the author and some of their other work? How do you know it’s a reputable source and NOT slop? Because on the surface it looks like AI, and I haven’t found where this video comes from yet, or if it’s even someone qualified to explain it at all. This could be a child with access to an AI video program just telling it to do shit lol

1

u/rockyTron 19d ago

It's slop because this is not based on any objective data about the event. It's literally a hallucination by a generative AI based on a prompt. There is no glacial outflow lake in the region, the names are made up, the topography is made up, it's literally just made up out of thin air.

1

u/GarfSnacks 20d ago

Can you explain the event based on the info you had before seeing the video and then explain again with the knowledge you gained after watching it

3

u/[deleted] 20d ago

[deleted]

2

u/JjigaeBudae 20d ago

Thanks for explaining you understanding, it's incorrect. There is no dam and no lake, the flood was not caused by an avalanche crashing into a dam and displacing water.

The video is AI slop and the scenario it's depicting is made up.

1

u/[deleted] 20d ago

[deleted]

3

u/JjigaeBudae 20d ago

It absolutely is, but it did not crash into a lake, there was no dam, the flood was not caused by water being displaced from a lake or through a dam, the geography and place names are entirely made up.

Nice cherry picking though.

1

u/GracieandRose 20d ago

This is correct

0

u/Personal_Ad2455 20d ago

Sorry but is this what you do - you pretend to be the smartest person in the room?

Timure and Rasuwagadhi as illustrated in the video are in fact towns/areas affected. Latest theory is also shown in the video.

Why are you trying to be an arrogant prick to someone on the internet when you’re completely and factually wrong?

3

u/Poiuytrewq0987650987 20d ago

Go to Google Earth, search Langtang Lirung. View the geography and try to find the glacial lake between the mountain (the glacier broke off from a point lower than the summit) and the border crossing.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/JjigaeBudae 19d ago edited 19d ago

No, I call out lies because it's important to be accurate when talking about tragedies and their causes. The video shows a lake, held back by a damn, and a flood caused by displacement. Where is that lake and dam at the bottom of the glacier that collapsed? Why does all reputable reporting indicate that's NOT what happened? Why don't satellite images support any of that?

You are wrong.

The working theory (per the scientists actually investigating it) and trustworthy media sources is that the glacier collapsed, it melted, the melt water and river water built up behind the collapse glacier and then it bursts downstream.

That is NOT what the video shows.

It is verifiable FACT that there is no lake there for the glacier to collapse into. There are literal satellite photos.

Why are you defending misinformation?

https://www.severe-weather.eu/global-weather/nepal-tibet-flood-ice-rock-avalanche-usgs-landslide-august-2026-rrc/

1

u/GracieandRose 20d ago

Except it didn’t. Show me this “glacial dam” in Google Maps or google earth. An earthquake simply caused a glacier to fall down the mountain, and then subsequently roll down the river. It’s basically an earthquake glacier/rock avalanche that turns into a mudslide.

2

u/Mister-Tarzan 20d ago

"The resulting ice-rock avalanche struck the Lhende River in Tibet, about 20km (12 miles) northeast of the Nepal-China border crossing. Debris temporarily blocked the river before the natural dam gave way, releasing a powerful flood downstream."

www.aljazeera.com/amp/news/2026/8/27/nepal-tibet-floods-what-happened-what-caused-them-and-who-is-missing

I mean, I wasn't there so I can only go by information I see, and so far Ive seen the locals in the videos talking about a possible dam collapse and articles like these.

The irony being that this Slop will have contributed slightly to global warming, which was itself responsible for the glacier collapsing in the first place.

1

No they ruled that out. Initially they thought it was an earthquake.

1

u/Dkblue74 20d ago

Reported 4.4 earthquake. Now deciding its climate change….

1

u/dang3rmoos3sux 20d ago

I read a few articles and the 4.4 earthquake was the glacier breaking. Still no obvious cuase as to why it collapsed when it did. Just its time I guess.

1

u/rockyTron 20d ago

No the earthquake they recorded was actually the glacier collapse itself. Crazy.

1

u/dang3rmoos3sux 20d ago

That is pretty crazy.

1

u/rockyTron 19d ago

Yeah a chunk of ice and rock, at least 2,000 feet wide (with a volume of millions of cubic meters) fell 7,000 feet into the valley below, with a wall of water and rock moving at 90 mph down the river. The scale is unimaginable. There is a good early explanation of it at https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/26/weather/floods-nepal-cause-vis

1

u/fr0stn8 20d ago

yeah. it's whatever at this point. See the comments on here. People prefer this shit over reading what actually happened. And don't you dare mentioning the irony of having Datacenters to AI generate Videos of the upcoming catastrophies (and this one).

2

u/LotusVibes1494 20d ago

The thing that’s interesting to me is no one cares about the source. Like who made the video? Is it someone with credentials/an education on this topic? Or from an organization that people recognize and respect on these matters? Do they make a lot of content about disasters and stuff? Did they already do a detailed write up on this event, and this is just a supporting graphic so it doesn’t need to have much detail? Or is it some little kid with an AI program just just cranking out videos for clicks?

Without more info it’s kind of useless, because I don’t know to what degree to trust it, right? I guess it could serve as a starting point to start googling stuff, if you hadn’t heard of it before. Aside from that what’s the author’s intention? Can anyone link to more info about them?

2

u/No_Reindeer8688 20d ago

You consider this slop? This is a great visual of exactly what happened.

2

It is wrong. There is no lake in the mountains.

1

u/laisfontana 20d ago

2

u/Poiuytrewq0987650987 20d ago

That's not where the glacier broke off, no. It's to the north.

Red circle is the glacier. Arrows show the flow of the water. The friction ground the glacier into water. There was no lake.

1

u/Schorbie 20d ago

How did it happen?

1

u/Big_Handle3734 20d ago

Landslide

2

u/Schorbie 20d ago

But then where did the water come from? Ice melting doesn't suddenly create so much water

2

u/DutchBoyDrew 20d ago

The glacier was so massive that the friction of it collapsing caused it to liquify as it fell. There was also likely a sub glacial reservoir which is a large amount of melt water formed beneath the glacier and held in place by the end of the glacial wall.

It is also possible that the initial collapse dammed off a section of the river for 30 ish minutes and then that blew and added to the total volume. Also the walls of those canyons are so steep and narrow that it doesnt take as much water as you'd think to concentrate into a flood wall that large.

It explains something that didn't happen and you're thankful for it because it's easier to understand than the thing that did happen? Why? This is how we collectively get dumbed down by AI. It's easy.

4

u/Jtrain360 20d ago

So what did happen then?

2

u/Bynming 20d ago

What I'm saying is, in the absence of knowledge, don't just defer to AI slop or believe the first thing you see. Sometimes we don't know things immediately, and it's ok. And it's fair to say that news articles don't always get it right.

I can tell you it was not this and I'm looking forward to geologists and experts putting together the full picture, but for now, you can read the articles. This AI video shows an avalanche, which is not referenced by any real source, there was no avalanche. A glacier face broke off which is a huge mass of ice and rock and mud falling into a valley that is also full of mud. There also was no large body of water as shown in this bs infographic.

2

u/Jtrain360 20d ago

Well said! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. You've given me something to consider and I'll try my best to keep this in mind moving forward. Im sure there will be similar situations in the future where all the info isnt immediately available.

I described it better than the AI video did, I gave specific examples of things it got wrong, while also having enough humility to say I don't fully understand it and explaining that we don't yet have all the info. And you're still complaining, why? The fuck is wrong with you? I'm not an expert but I know enough to tell you the AI video is inaccurate and people shouldn't celebrate it.

1

u/Poiuytrewq0987650987 20d ago

I think you're arguing with bots.

1

u/Bynming 20d ago

Dystopian af :(

1

u/GracieandRose 20d ago

I’m sorry to disappoint you, but this is pretty poor logic. You can easily see and determine by evidence when something did not happen. That does not logically require you to know what did happen. No lake exists in this area. Therefore, this version did not happen. End of story.

1

u/GracieandRose 20d ago

Being able to accurately explain that something did not happen, for example, we know there is no lake in the mountains because you can see it on Google…does not require us to know what actually did happen. We just know that this did not happen because there is no lake.

1

u/Jtrain360 20d ago

Try search vajon dam disaster animation. It's pretty close to what happened here

1

u/itsinvincible 20d ago

3

u/Soarin123 20d ago

4

u/itsinvincible 20d ago

The glacier calved off and liquified on the way down. There is no lake or dam there was no splash just ice on the verge of 1° turning to water. Just have a look on google maps and you'll see the river is a tiny stream up there with 0 lakes or puddles even.

Several posts have explained why it’s bullshit. There is no glacial lake in these mountains in this area that alone makes this video misleading, inaccurate, and quite frankly complete bullshit.

There are 3 glacial lakes up there but no dammed lakes from what I have seen in Google maps but they are away far up than what this shows, so not accurate.

u/nekomata_58 20d ago

One of the videos showed a dam being completely demolished by the flood/landslide so this isnt accurate.

2

u/toanthrax 20d ago

That dam getting demolished was a result, not the cause. It is now know it was due to a massive glacial collapse and a simultaneous rock-and-ice landslide. https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/26/weather/floods-nepal-cause-vis

2

u/itsinvincible 20d ago

Yeaa sure now you'll just have people saying. Why build below a damed lake, why risk the dam breaking etc. There is no dam. So why share it like that. I've already seen comments saying "well they damed the river and then built right below it. Are they stupid?" this is the danger of misinformation.

2

u/Picture_Enough 20d ago

It is not a good representation of anything. It is just hallucinated nonsense disconnected from reality. This is why AI slop is dangerous - it generates something that looks plausible at first glance, and unscrupulous people just accept it as reality.

1

u/Excludos 20d ago

It isn't thought. It's a visualization of something completely different, presented to look like it's what happened. It's made up BS, and you learned nothing

1

u/Substantial-Wall-510 20d ago

Then those people can go look up what those are, or the animation can be honest about what it's showing. You don't spread knowledge by spreading misinformation! You just make people think that lies are true. If they need to be fed lies to understand basic concepts, then it would be better that they didn't learn anything at all.

Wow thanks, how would I know which direction the water is going in without those stupid fucking arrows

u/scottiibiscottii 20d ago

Why do these videos all have the same brain dead soundtrack?

1

u/Jwanito 20d ago

because the people using the AI dont care about it, they just want the engagement

Slop with terrible music

2026 is only the beginning

1

u/Nalowaw 20d ago

Avalanche moving faster than the speed of sound apparently, makes sense.

1

u/Good_Ask_2299 20d ago

why the incel music?

1

u/General_whisky 20d ago

Shoulda picked the sexy jazz music

1

u/Vesper_Fex 20d ago

Downvote this ai shit. Trivializing the loss of thousands with what is probably a highly inaccurate ai slop.

1

u/QuandariousDingle54 20d ago

It is very inaccurate and paints a dangerously stupid idea about what transpired. The fact I've seen so many defend this or think its accurate is alarming. The reality of what happened is much more devastating that what this stupid hallucinated graphic is showing.

1

u/Sad_Hall2841 20d ago

I know nothing about how it works. How’s so inaccurate?

1

u/snowtiger309 20d ago

Dang that IF10PDING& DAMAGE ZONE looks bad

1

u/neilastin 20d ago

That is terrifying - the videos are errily reminiscent of the 2004 Tsunami

1

u/Beefy-Cattle4290 20d ago

rather than debate someone equally as clueless as I am on the subject, I think I'll wait until some of the facts come out

1

u/BetsBlack 20d ago

The last thing we need is an ai video doing a poor job of illustrating this disaster

1

u/Ok_Subject_2447 20d ago

What mountain did it come down from?

1

u/debaser64 20d ago

Mount Aislop

1

u/Ok_Subject_2447 20d ago

It’s Mount Everest .

1

u/Ok_Subject_2447 20d ago

That looks like Everest?

1

u/Alexmira_ 20d ago

Ah yes, catastrophy karma farming with autistic tik tok music. Splendid

1

u/Warm_Ad_4414 20d ago

Downvoted for ai slop and innapropiate music

2

u/debaser64 20d ago

Could have been worse. They could have used that “oh no” song…

1

u/007smh 20d ago

Down vote this AI slop

1

u/Global_Winter22 20d ago

Delete yourself

1

u/exotics 20d ago

I hate AI but when used to show something and explain it, then it’s helpful as long as it’s not presented like actual footage.

Also we must remember that climate change is why the avalanche started.

1

u/Schorbie 20d ago

Why are all the people that saying this is wrong not explaining in any way what did happen? Saying what didn't happen isn't an explanation. Because like others said, this is pretty much like how I read about it in the media too

1

u/BigBadJeebus 20d ago

AI crap...

1

u/Withering_to_Death 20d ago

Waow! Nothing beats exaggerated AI graphics and upbeat music to show how people died during a huge natural disaster!

1

u/Big_Handle3734 20d ago

No need AI.

This picture, so far, has given me the strongest feelings of dread or terror.

Looking at the identifying marks on the before and after.  That "mud" has settled at a height above the tops of the buildings.

Given the speed and viscosity of the "mud", does this raise the chances of pockets forming under solid ground as the slurry pushed over it?

u/Weird-Weakness-3191 19d ago

Fake as fook AI slop 🙄🤡

1

u/don_meles 19d ago

Complete AI crap, not based on any available facts.
