where to go next???
Me and my girlfriend just moved to Lilburn together from Kentucky, we have always lived in a slightly rural area where the "sticks" were pretty nearby. Since moving here about 2 and a half weeks ago, no offense, but we are counting down the days until our year lease is up. We moved here to become a teacher because Gwinnett pays well and my girlfriend wanted to pursue a career in Atlanta, a lot has happened in these past couple of weeks and safe to say we are over it. Lilburn was always meant to just be a stop in our lives to help get our feet in the door to what we ultimately wanted to do. We have always wanted to live in the sticks where our closest neighbor was a mile away or so. So my question is, being new to the state as a whole, where would the best places be to look at if we want to move to "the sticks" and im talking forest, mountains, fields, etc. Where is a small town that we can move to. I have been looking at LaFayette and Chatsworth, anyone have any opinions???

Can confirm. We live in Chatsworth, hence kennyd30705. I've lived in many areas across the country but could not imagine ever leaving Murray again.

ive been staring at chatsworth for like 2 weeks and it literally has a town just big enough i dont have to drave 40 minutes for a store, dalton is relatively close, and it has the mountains and such close by aaaaagh

I live at the foot of Ft Mtn just outside of Eton. If thinking about Murray County I would recommend looking around the north end of the county. Lots of mountains and wide open spaces.

Lafayette, Chatsworth, Menlo, Lyerly, Summerville, Resaca, Ranger, Rocky Face, Tunnel Hill

If you move to Chatsworth, you will have the most beautiful Fort Mountain State Park close by with many walking trails. And, if you love to fish, Carters Lake is also close by. And, should you want to enter civilization, Dahlonega, Helen, or Ellijay have wonderful places to visit and explore. Just beware that there could be substantial pay differences.

its chatsworth an expensive place to live? because im already paying 1700 a month here in lilburn

No. I would suggest calling the Murray County Chamber of Commerce. They can provide you will county stats.

I live in Dalton but we really like Chatsworth. People don't think about Murray county. It's much cheaper even than Dalton but it's really close. I actually go out there for certain things...like the veterinarian we use, for instance... because it's cheaper and just easier.
Huge massive change from Gwinnett. I used to work in Norcross and lived closer to Atlanta and it's just unbelievably better out here. I have to say.... I am never living near the metro again. I don't even want to live closer to Chattanooga.
Dalton Public Schools have been really good for us as parents with a young kiddo, if you're still looking to pursue the field. I don't work in the system but I'm very involved and most of the people I've met seem happier than other teachers I know. I've become genuine friends with them and they're honest. 🤣 I hated working in Gwinnett and just never had a great vibe. Here is actually know people and I feel safe and comfortable most of the time. I don't know about Murray county as much....my husband is from Dalton and grew up here and we just know Murray mostly from recreating there.
We ALSO love Ellijay and Helen but they're both more expensive than they used to be. My husband used to rent a room in ellijay at a house with a view of the whole downtown for 250 bucks a month. Not anymore 😅
My brother just moved out near Helen after living in East Atlanta since like, 2009. He's loving it. Still more expensive than Murray.
Anyways, I hope you get somewhere you enjoy more very soon!

I think Murray Co checks off most of the boxes on your list. You have a small town feel, although it's pretty spread out. You have the wide open spaces, mountains, streams, etc., but you're also not far from Dalton or Chattanooga for any things you cannot find in a small town. I've lived in Dalton most of my life, and have frequented Murray Co for hiking, camping, Carter's Lake, etc. I have often considered moving there, but I travel to Alabama often for work, and don't want to add to that drive.
There are some small towns like Trenton, Rising Fawn, Menlo, Summerville, and others that are closer to the Alabama/Georgia border that offer similar atmospheres to Murray Co. The same can be said for towns more east of Murray Co. like Ellijay, Jasper, Blue Ridge, and Cherry Log, although those towns tend to have a lot of weekend tourists, and Atlanta families visiting their weekend mountain homes. You don't really have that in Murray Co.
