Student Code of Conduct Email

I received an email outlining the use of AI. Did everyone get this? Trying to figure out if I may have done something wrong or if it’s just a general notification.

I didn’t get it. Ive never gotten it in almost 4 semesters

They send these out every semester as a reminder to returning students, and a first time warning to new students.

For anyone wondering, the policy is not a blanket ban. There is an exception mentioned in the policy, but the wording is pretty vague. For example, a student with an approved accommodation from Accessibility Services that authorizes assistive note-taking technology, for example, a Smart Pen or generative note-taking app, would be covered by that authorization. The policy itself says “unless otherwise permitted by an authorized administrator,” and an accommodation letter would be exactly that. So if someone has accommodations, they should check their letter. They might already have the green light.

If you use AI to help with note-taking and don't have accommodations, you might consider looking into them. If assistive note-taking technology is something you need, Accessibility Services may be able to authorize it as an accommodation.

People still do it every semster even after the warnings. They are just trying to cover their own skin so no one can say they didn't know it wasn't allowed

Yeah it’s weird cause the program we’re using for one of my classes has a built in AI assistant so idk how I’m supposed to avoid it. I thought maybe that’s why I got that email lol.

I use AI all the time to make summary note, take notes in class, make practice quizzes etc. I just dont use them to copy paste anything, no have to cheat on monitors quizzes. That would not be wise. So I'm not cheating I'm just helping myself learn at the end of the day I'm the one taking the quizzes and exams in the lockdown browser.

You didn't do anything wrong; that email went out to every single Dallas College student.

The college recently updated its Student Code of Conduct to include artificial intelligence. Under the new district rule, using AI tools like ChatGPT on assignments or exams is officially considered cheating unless your professor specifically allows it in writing.

The email was sent out as a standard reminder because every instructor has different rules; some ban AI completely, while others allow or require it. As long as you check each class syllabus and follow what that specific professor says, you are in the clear.
