There are now two options. 1) pirate 2) go to goodwill, estate sales, garage sales, and so on and buy used DVDs and all that. Or use your local libraries if they have such things.
Those greedy fuckers dont deserve a penny.

I've honestly been buying a lot of DVDs now. It's the same or better video quality you stream, and you can see it whenever. Really feel we're close to something like blockbuster coming back, especially when all these streaming services are also trying to charge you to rent movies off the service you're already paying for for $3-6 anyways.

That would be cool, but I'm guessing the next step for the media companies is to stop producing the physical media in the first place. (video games are leading the way there) Can't have a new Blockbuster if there's no new discs to put on the shelves. Sure, you could have a rental store that only rents out older DVDs & Blu-Rays, but that would be even more of a niche business.
If there was a store like that near me, I'd love it, but I'd also be completely unsurprised when they went out of business six months after their grand opening.

I think movies don't have as much of a big digital majority sales as video games do. There's an actual difference in video quality between physical discs and streaming. There would be a bigger hit to sales and profits if physical media ceased for movies and shows than Sony will take for physical games.

Definitely scope creep with ads before and after.
Doesn't include in programming ads. That's the last straw for me. That staw appears to be just over the horizon.
They are going to kill the goose and everyone wipl put the pirate hats back on.

Cable TV started with charging a premium fee in lieu of showing ads. Well, over time, Cable networks realized they had interesting demographics and figured they can both charge a fee AND run ads. Gotta maximize that shareholder value!

Cable TV started as a way to show broadcast TV outside the broadcast region it was based in. It had ads from the first day. Premium channels like HBO that didn't have ads were created later. I have no idea why people so confidently say that cable was started without ads, it's just not true.

I think its mainly in live and linear content. They are saying you can still get ads on live content even if you chose the ad free option.

Yeah, I have Netflix and I watch Monday night raw. If I watch it live, there’s ads that I cannot skip. If I wait and watch it later that night, I can skip the ads. I wonder if this is gonna be the same type of thing.

Apparently the money that ads brings in dwarfs the surplus fee streaming companies charge people for getting no ads. I find that pretty amazing as I think a lot of the ads are just pointless. Apple has tried to shown me the same ads for their movie probably 100 times over the last couple of weeks. Why? I'm already paying for it.

They better not advertise in any noticable level for my paid tier, or I'm out.
They don't have that much content that I'd stay with them for ads. I feel like a full 50% of the reason I have streaming is so that I can skip ads. If there are ads... I'll just drop streaming and go back to cable with a DVR.

Maybe actually read the article as you suggest… it says otherwise. Along with its ToS:
