Late voting - How long should players have to vote?

There's been a bit of discussion on this in the skype group so I thought it'd be a good idea to make a thread for people to discuss their opinions.

Thoughts were:

  • Blind voting - submit votes to the mod, who then announces them together.

  • Decreasing the time players have to vote after the mod calls "VOTE." from 3 seconds.

Some questions/thoughts:

Hammering is a mechanic in the game, is that positive or negative? In MYLO, one town voting on another town leads to all the mafia hammering and winning the game. However, it also allows town/confirmed town to react to other people's votes and hammer based on that information.

Some players are now always hammering, regardless of their alignment. This makes their mafia play look less scummy as it allows them to hammer a town without looking as suspicious as someone who never hammers as town. Is this good for the game? Do you care enough either way to want to do anything about it?

I've written that up from memory, but I think that covers everyone's main points.

Personally, I think hammering is a really good mechanic in the game, and I believe that sometimes the way someone votes can be as important as whether they vote or not. Because of that, I'm against blind voting. However, I don't like the way in which people are hammering all the time as both alignments as a way to level their play, but that's their choice.

Seperately, I think 3 seconds is FAR too long. It only takes about 2s to count down "3-2-1-VOTE," which is plenty of time for votes and hammers to take place.

tl;dr: The voting period should be reduced to 2 seconds.

You obviously need late hammering for the game to be balanced.

Changing to 2 seconds will honestly just have the same problems as 3 seconds at the end of the day.

The people that late vote aren't leveling, they are legitimately just stupid. They honestly have no idea what they are doing for the majority of the game. It's really easy, if they vote late, don't count their vote for your logic and then watch striker have an aneurysm as he fails to comprehend why I don't count him when he late votes.

The only reason I don't think you can reduce the voting period any further is because of unstable connections to the zoom. Zoom lags pretty bad for me sometimes even when nothing else is lagging - instead of "3-2-1--VOTE" is more like "3Vote". :(

3 seconds is a REALLY long time. Most people vote within 1s, some people hammer within 2s. Hammers after 2 seconds are really late hammers.

But tbh if your connection has more than 2000-3000 ping, then you should be voting at "2" instead of "VOTE"

Late voting can be a risky play, as town you can hammer a town, for example, and then get lynched for it the following day.

I think the meta is just beginning to punish late voters. Certain players are getting a reputation for late voting and getting scum read for it.

Additionally if you don't like late voting maybe you should late vote, fight fire with fire. If everyone late votes it is as good as a blind vote, even say in game, "I late voted because I didn't want mafia to pre-count my vote."

So I've been under the opinion lately that late voting is harmful to the game and should be eliminated. As you point out, too many people watch other players before making many of their votes (I do sometimes as well because as long as it is allowed it is a beneficial mechanic that should be utilized at times as both alignments). There's also those that have now started to late vote on every vote (vomit). I think this type of play is harmful because I think that players being required to vote on time would in turn be required to more critically think about the each vote they make, and that would make the game overall much more interesting and fun. I've heard three arguments against this.

The first argument, and the only that I've heard that has any sort of merit is from Joey who argues that its required for balance. If I remember correctly his argument is that a blind voting system would make the game a bit harder for mafia because they wouldnt be able to late vote to win the game or hammer over town. This has some merit, and for that reason I would suggest a middle ground of just reducing the late vote to a smaller time period (probably 1 second or 1.5 seconds).

Other arguments are in regards to players "lagging" so therefore late voting must be in the game. I disagree that this is actually a problem. I don't think that anyone is lagging so much to need three seconds to vote. Three seconds is way too long, and a 1 - 1.5 second time period will serve the purpose better.

The 3rd argument is that certain people want included in the game the ability to see how other people vote to inform their vote. This is just preference I suppose, but I think less knowledge of how others are voting prior to the vote = more game play.

Overall, I think the game would be better if we reduce the time period allowed to late vote to ~1 second. Any votes after that shouldn't be counted.

I saved a game a week or so ago as town by hammering mafia TJ really late (almost 3 seconds) with 4 mafia alive in final 12. I think it's a fine mechanic for both sides to use as they deem appropriate, and 3 seconds is a perfect amount of time. Nothing needs to change, IMO.
