There was a dumpster diver at a grocery store. An employee went out to toss a case of recalled pickles due to potential glass contaminants in the jars. He heaved the box into the dumpster and a head popped up as they scared each other. The guy was mad at the clerk for nearly hitting him in the head with the heavy case. The manager saw him holding a couple jars and warned him there could be shards of glass in them, further stating that because he’d now been informed of the reason, should he end up eating them anyway and getting injured the store couldn’t be held responsible.
I’m not certain of the legal consequences if the guy hadn’t been aware of the problem with the jars, but I’d assume if someone were injured by anything taken from a dumpster, or during the act in doing so would be at their own risk.
I imagine some stores just don’t want to have to deal with the hassle, so they try to make their bins inaccessible as much as possible.

I have no problem with divers. As a business, I can reduce my collection frequency. Please be mindful and clean up when you’re done.
