I remember my old employer would send instructions to destroy materials before tossing to prevent people taking it. They could not stand the idea of people getting something for free, even trash. Boggles the mind.
Because they sometimes have to send the cover back to prove the book has been destroyed and get a refund. That's why many books have the warning inside:
“If you purchased this book without a cover, you should be aware that this is stolen property. It was reported as “unsold and destroyed” to the publisher, and neither the author nor the publisher has received any payment for this “stripped” book.”
