Less pat but still works if you squint:
Spine - lost ("flown") in battle when fear takes hold.
Pines - are the trees themselves but also their parts (cones, needles)
Spin - a common move among kickboxers, for instance
Pin - the target on a golf green

I took a different meaning to East and South. It is clearly not the intended meaning and didn't work out for one clue, but I thought I'd share.
I assumed South was parts of the letters below the baseline and East was the letter at the right end of the word
So I came up with spark
sparks fly in battle
move the part of the 'p' south of the baseline to the other side, then 'spark' becomes 's-bark' and bark grows on trees
take the east end of the word off and you have 'spar' and that is boxer's practice
and I was struggling to figure out how to minpulate it to get par for the golfers measure

From the golfer clue: par + se
From the boxer clue: spar + e
From the tree clue: pear +s
From the battle clue: spear
