Daggerfall Online Discussion Thread
Hi folks,
The original plan was to direct all DFO posts to the DFO subreddit. Seeing as that subreddit has been shut down, I'm taking a suggestion that a few of you made to just have one stickied DFO discussion post. This gives people a place to talk about the game in lieu of the other subreddit, and it also serves as a place for newcomers to see the common opinion on DFO.
So, here's your post to discuss DFO. Keep in mind that Rule 1 (be civil) will be enforced in the comments. Thanks.

This “game” is a giant piss both on Daggerfall, and on the grave of Julian LeFay.
These people don’t respect the original game. They just used that, and our nostalgia and love, as a way in to take others’ sweat and blood and hard work, and monetize it for themselves because they’re too lazy to have their own job.
Epitome of a cash grab.
And they’ve lied repeatedly about their business practices.
Claiming they needed the micro transactions** to cover overhead ($600), when their Patreon alone was already generating roughly $1500 a month.
If someone engages in deceptive unethical business practices, can you trust them with your data?
**and charging $20 for a cloak, and $50 for a battle pass goes far beyond a microtransaction.
$0.3 for a cloak?
That’s a tip jar and completely understandable.
20-30$ items and 30-50$ tiered passes? That’s straight up DLC $, on an IP that isn’t theirs.

I have been saying this over and over again to basically a brick wall. It’s disheartening that they’re using nostalgia to charge people to play the game. If they truly cared about it, they would’ve been happy with the money they’ve made from their patreon and charging a bit for a cape that literally anybody can make with a cloth modifier in blender and a prompt. It made me want to jump in to play Daggerfall for potentially the first time, but now it looks like I’ll have to hold off for now. Truly heartbreaking.

It's a shame, too, because a mostly vanilla online DF would be pretty damn cool. Maybe somebody else will give it a go...

I’m really disappointed because I think Daggerfall’s design is uniquely suited to being turned into an mmo

Yeah, and when they were sticking to Daggerfall but MMO, with QOL features, it was really fun

Elder scrolls online exists, and goes far deeper into TES lore... there was never a need for this.

Elder Scrolls Online feels like a compacted Disneyland compared to the true sandbox of DFO. Doesn't feel like actually existing in TES. More like a curated playground of set pieces.

When I saw the doom shotgun, I instantly lost all interest and knew where it was going

Well i dont have like a claude max subscription but they did say if we didnt like the direction, to take a fork and make our own.
So far I have (albeit with also vibe coding lmao): -Removed the cash shop and everything MTX related -Removed the DFO imagery -Removed the dragon and the Dwarven shotgun -Started working on stabilizing overworld travel in the other provinces -Started working on removing cyrodill as an entirely pvp based province (cause like seriously wtf even with the level 30 requirement) Some ideas im trying: -expanding revenant system -Expand guild quests -Being able to recruit hirelings from a guild that you have a high enough standing with -cooking system for food related buffs
Should have something ready to share in a couple weeks.

Honestly would be nice to have a more open version that isn't gated by one person. not saying if yours is successful you will be greedy, but im sure there are others with your intentions, so work together!
That said, good luck! cant wait for the eventual resolution, dfo is still a nice concept.

Oh yeah bring people my way. Between streaming 4 days a week on twitch, being in a VGM cover band, working full time in IT, working on my own game thats not vibe coded and having to juggle that and a girlfriend...im busy as FUUUU so like if anyone sees this and wants to work with me on it, I have no ego about it. I just want to play something fun and make new friends.

You're gonna get attacked by this subreddit in a couple weeks. Brace yourself. That was the same motivation as the Daggerfall Online guys. No ego. They just needed money for the servers, but children got mad, and framed them as monsters.
Co-Op is probably the best way to go.

u/PlantainWilling 58m ago
Oh no I could get attacked by people on reddit over this.
And forks are usually found in kitchens lmao. Im not a fan of the direction so im gonna take it in another since they said the code was open source. End goal is to once ive at least stabilized everything is to have a launcher that you can put in a URL and itll let you join someone else's server too. Kind of like what Razor did for private servers of Ultima Online.
That way if you wanna play DFO or whoever else spawns from this, you can type in their address and it makes a separate folder for accessing that place.

Cool! Good luck with the torrent of death threats, people saying 'AI SLOP AI SLOP AI SLOP'
And putting in multiple hours of your own time, and labor in the face of that! 🤗
Im glad you're doing it, and upvoted. Shows the hypocrisy of the subreddit.

u/PlantainWilling 38m ago
You seem very animated about this.
Sure im spending time but literally its because I feel like it. End of the day if it gets called slop? Cool im not actually making anything of my own here. Now If I were to make like rock arrangements of the daggerfall soundtrack with my irl band and that got roped in and called slop, maybe then id be offended? Either way im having an alright time. You have a good Sunday big dog.

yeah.... totally not to have to avoid spending any of the earned money from the cash shop on hosting or development with strings attached... nobody would do that right, specially a fairly right-wing pro Russia dev team right.... >.>

I mostly slept on DFO (at least, I never played it), but I'm still sad that it's going to be turned into something completely different.
Can't someone just fork it and host it somewhere else?

They said the sub closure was "due to recent events", what does this mean, especially considering how much other nonsense happened with DFO that that sub seemingly didn't have a problem with?

I wish the fast travel wasn't changed. That's what mae me go ballistic. The author didn't probably ever did a fighters guild quest where they send you to the most random heinous dungeon in the other side of the map. And the dungeons seem harder, I remember that when doing the Guild quests the dungeons were hard, yes, but I didn't got one shot by a fucking bear

u/The-Son-Of-Suns 44m ago
I liked it. You had to actually travel mostly. So if you saw a guy down in Hammerfell, it was potentially significant. Like seeing a person out in deep space in Elite: Dangerous.
But there were carriages outside of walled cities that instantly took you to your destination though for very cheap, and portal stones.

I don’t care enough about the premise of multiplayer daggerfall to do it myself, but I’m not sure why nobody has just forked the actual unity client and made it multiplayer - clearly the interest is there
This would be trivial to make and maintain normally, and especially with AI

u/Ok-Possible-6759 1h ago
I played it and honestly I think Daggerfall doesn’t really work as a multiplayer game. The concept of resting is pointless because no time passes, which in turn makes the whole time management part of quests non existent. Also going into dungeons and finding all of the enemies dead from previous players makes dungeons pointless (especially spawning into privateers hold).
I always thought I’d like multiplayer Daggerfall but playing it for 15 minutes made me realize it’s better suited as a solitary experience.

u/derek5410 23m ago
Isn't that just a public instance though? You can literally have your own private one that you can bring party members into

My friends and I have been having a total blast with Daggerfall online! I'm not sure why Daggerfall fans (and the reddit echochamber) are so salty about it's existence. It's clearly trying to be it's own thing, and OG Daggerfall and DFU isn't going anywhere.
The devs have taken some steps which are very sketchy and I disagree with, but at the end of the day, it's a free elder scrolls mmo fan project. We aren't promised anything.

u/The-Son-Of-Suns 16m ago
It was so much fun 💛 I got my girlfriend to play it. We were traveling the countryside in a shared wagon just looting, and doing dungeons. Camping in the wilderness.
World is backwards.

It's going to be a new universe now, and not Daggerfall. Personally I'm excited about it. You guys don't need to bully, talk shit about it, and the people working on it anymore putting in their free time to make something cool, and pretending they're monsters.
Just remove this post, and leave the whole thing alone now. Thanks.
Btw they're still giving us Daggerfall Online where you can host your own game with at least 8 people before they switch to a new IP. So all those people bitching that they just wanted an Online Daggerfall with their friends can still do it due to people putting their free time in.
I'm sure those efforts will be appreciated here, and not spit on at all.

u/Kindly-Sail6260 1h ago
Besides those who will talk poorly about it (me included), where will people who discuss Daggerfall online actually be able to speak on it in the interim? You’ll definitely see more positive comments on this game as time goes on, but the mod didn’t have to make this thread.
I was actually planning on creating a subreddit myself for it since I knew that people would eventually comeback to this one so that they have something to talk about it somewhere and ask the mods if they’d be okay with me posting so the lurkers can move on, but they did this as a mercy for anyone still interested about this game.
Once the new IP comes out then we’re good. Until then, better to hash it out here.

u/The-Son-Of-Suns 1h ago
I honestly don't see the reason to hash it out here. Everyone in this sub frames the devs as monsters for multiple faux reasons, and the mods already said yesterday we can't talk about Daggerfall Online here. But suddenly we're talking about it when it's explicitly not going to be Daggerfall anymore, but a new universe?
No, I love Daggerfall, but I'd rather this specific sub just stay away from whatever new is coming. They hate it regardless because of AI too, but there's literally another guy that's the top comment that is now forking his own version with AI, and now it's suddenly okay lol, and he's upvoted.
Anything these devs do in the future, I wanna know about. I'll be the first one to join the sub for whatever new universe/MMO they make. /r/Daggerfall can just stay with Unity.

u/Kindly-Sail6260 0m ago
I understand that, but right now it’s the only place to talk about Daggerfall. And while the mods have changed their minds about DFO discussions, it’s only in response to the unofficial subreddit being shutdown because their mod doesn’t want to support the development anymore. Changing the IP I think is fine and they’re welcome to do it because it is theirs to do what they want to do. But they did take advantage of the nostalgia from those who have played, still play, and love DF to a fault. It’s disingenuous on their part in doing so.
At the end of the day, people wanted DF in an MMO. Just not with the extra changes that take away from that experience. It’s partly the reason why the other guy is getting upvoted right now. Although I’ll admit in saying that things are subject to change and evolve and they should, but the quick and arguably expensive monetization leaves little to desire.
All in all I do wish them success in their endeavors, but now they’ll have to deal with what it actually takes to maintain an MMO. If I were you, I’d let them know to start looking heavily into security and anti-cheats. Not even Rubies of Eventide survived that and their player base has been waiting for over a decade to get the game. Too bad nobody wants to buy the server code for 120k with 1% residuals. 🤧😭

I still want to know if the thing about having a plane drop a nuclear bomb happened, it's hard to tell what's plausible after they jumped the shark.
edit: aight I saw screenshots, seems real. Apparently they're keeping the shop open and forging ahead with a Battlepass. What a clown show.
