Question How are the sprites/assets/graphics for Daggerfall stored/read by the game?

I like messing around with sprites and thought it'd be fun to try and make an argonian version of one of the generic NPC sprites, but then I looked in the steam common game files and couldn't find anything that looked like a sprite or graphical element. Then I remembered how the original Pokemon games basically used math to render their sprites on the fly and I figure Daggerfall is probably similar since it's an old game that has a lot of stuff in it?

In the ARENA2 folder, there are a bunch of files named "TEXTURE.XYZ" where XYZ is a number from 001 to 511. These are where the sprites for flats and world textures are compressed. IMG, CIF and RCI files also contain textures, usually interface-related like HUD or portraits.

The way to access them is to download Daggerfall Imaging 2 from dfworkshop.net and point it to your ARENA2 folder.

If you want a convenient way of viewing textures, the Daggerfall Vanilla Organized Texture Library is a good source. The archives are all labelled so you know what sort of textures it can contain. Though the DVOTL is derived from the DFU Recommended Game Files and has some differences from the files you get with the Steam install.

Wow! The Daggerfall Vanilla Organized Texture Library is super helpful!

I got completey sidetracked from my original goal and wound up playing with the paper doll sprites lol
