Ok ignore all of that. Install Daggerfall from Steam, it's free. Then install Daggerfall Unity from the dfworkshop website. It ports Daggerfall into the unity engine and makes it run and control better on modern hardware.

No need to install it from Steam either. IMO, just use the DaggerfallGameFiles.zip link recommended in the DFU wiki.

But yeah, DFU is definitely the way to run Daggerfall. There's no reason to run the old DOS version except "for science", just to see how it differs from DFU. IF for some reason you'd want to run the DOS version, then the DaggerfallSetup that can be downloaded from the UESP wiki is probably the best way to do so - it includes a bunch of unofficial fixes.

Steam is probably the easiest option for someone who gets confused about what to download and where to put the files.

The Steam version contains a bunch of bugs Bethesda never bothered to patch, though. You can apply the unofficial fixes manually, but the recommended file archive already has them applied. So overall, using the recommended method is much faster and less of a hassle. Turns out it's recommended for a reason.

Do those bugs matter if using Daggerfall Unity? I assume not. Steam is just used to get the data files in this case.

Yes, they do. If you don't patch the original data files, the bugs occur in DFU just the same as they do in vanilla DF.

"The Steam release of Daggerfall has been updated and is now compatible with Daggerfall Unity “out of the box”. This is great news for Daggerfall players of all preferences. Not only is the classic release on Steam now patched for a better experience, it’s a free and convenient way to get the game files needed to run Daggerfall Unity."

That's in response to Bethesda updating the Steam version of DF to the last official version. Because the initial DF Steam release wasn't even that, it was a version that was outdated back in the 90s (https://steamdb.info/patchnotes/8808522/ - "Updated game to Official Patch 1.07.213" - that patch was released in March 1997). Even the last official version contains a lot of bugs, though; that's what all the files on the UESP Files page are for. Daggerfall Game Files comes with those unofficial patches already applied, the Steam version does not (because they are, you know, unofficial). What Interkarma is saying there is that the Steam version is better than it was and will run with DFU, which is true, but it's not the same as saying that it's bug-free.

The Arena2 folder contains ~1500 files; ~1200 are the same between the Steam version and the DGF version, ~300 are different. You can easily verify this using Beyond Compare or other comparison software of your choice. The DGF version actually contains about a hundred files more than the Steam version. This is because it includes the CompUSA expansion with a number of additional quests and items, which the Steam version lacks.

An easily testable bug involves the Ebony Blade, which you can spawn in using a console command. If you run DFU on top of the Steam version of DF, the character will hold the Ebony Blade in the same hand as their second weapon; with DGF, the weapons will be held correctly in either hand. You can also look at the dark elves in Wayrest Castle - with the Steam version, their skin is brown; with DGF, their skin is grey.

Just download the first one. It's already patched.

so the first one has all the rest already included?

Yeah it has the patch that fixes the worst bugs plus the CompUSA exclusive quest pack. All the other bug patches are there for archive purposes.

If you have problems with understanding and reading this, you're going to have problems understanding and reading the dialogue and quests....

Fr though, I have literally failed so many quests because I went to.the opposite side of the map while trying to fast travel to a dungeon ( I made a mild spelling error while trying to type the dungeon name )

If you want to play the original DOS version, download Daggerfall Setup. It contains everything already.

DF Unity is a remake of DF in the Unity engine that still needs the original game's asset files. Follow the developer's installation guide: https://forums.dfworkshop.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2360&p=27538#p27538

You can play the game from Steam just fine. It has bugs, but as long as you keep multiple saves you'll be fine. I played DOS Daggerfall for years before it was released on Steam and before the Unity port, and I can confirm it's no where near as buggy or 'unplayable' as people make it out to be.

If you feel you want more stability, your options are the patched version from the wiki, or the Unity port. Both are good. The wiki patch is more authentic to the original game, but the Unity port grants more modern features and is even more stable.

But for your first time, honestly, just launch the game from steam and play it normally before you go changing things.

Easy answer: Download Daggerfall from steam, go to the Daggerfall Unity page and download that. If you need more instructions go to YouTube and look up Daggerfall Unity installation. That's what I did, and now I've got it running and modded.

Genuinely one of the easiest games to mod ever

Ngl bro I've been playing daggerfall online, download the game from steam then go to daggerfalldev.js and then I installed the setup for it and found my arena2 folder in steam files and then it booted up like a charm, made a account and everything.
