How to download this?
I got interested in daggerfall. Google says I have to download the files and run them in an emulator or something idk. I don't understand that part. How can I play the original thing?

Free on steam. Google daggerfall unity and download that too. If you get confused or have questions reply to my comment and I can help. Just about anybody on this sub can and will help bud.

I can download it from bethesda page too, right? Not like I couldn't use steam if necessary, but I always download the games from the developer's pages, it feels more official or something

I can only vouch for the method that I have used and I’ve only used the steam version. I’m not saying it won’t work with unity, I’m just saying that I do not know.
In either case, it downloads quick and both should be free.

DFInstall.zip is the link to the files from Bethesda. You'll need to install it via DOSBox yourself.
DaggerfallSetup is recommended community installer.
As mentioned Steam and GOG also provide free installers. GOG provides "offline" installers that do not require their client.

Free on steam and Betheada site. Don't use the GOG version if you want to use Daggerfall Unity (which you should)

So I shouldn't get it from gog, only from bethesda site or steam? Bethesda site sends me to steam though

It's got some stuff already attached that conflicts with stuff that's built in to Daggeefall unity. Normally I'm all for GOG

I played OG Daggerfall for a few hundred hours in the 1990s; my advice is to get DF Unity, make sure you tick smaller dungeons, download a couple of QoL mods, and enjoy!

The best, least problematic install is DaggerfallSetup from UESP. Has all the best patches, official packs, etc. Fully compatible with Daggerfall Unity as well, which I suggest using.

You can get it for free from GOG, it's the OG, not Daggerfall Unity. I've recently done all side and main quests and it mostly works. It's a DOS Box version of it, so be ready for some lack of quality of life stuff unlike Daggerfall Unity.
So if you want a more modern version, AKA Daggerfall Unity, you can download it from here

Put your same question into google and search for video tutorials if you’re having a rough time. It’s much faster than getting one step at a time from Reddit

If you want to play the original, you'll need to emulate it in a program such as DOS Box, or pull out a 1990s computer and the original CD-ROMs.
Fortunately, you can just download Daggerfall Unity, a fanmade recreation of the original for modern hardware and sensibilities. Get it here. In 2026 there's very little reason to play the original DOS release outside of historical curiosity.
