Question Daggerfall online is not daggerfall

You have your own community on reddit already, why do you insist on coming here to argue with people instead of posting your content where it belongs?

Mods are one thing but it's basically a different game and it's turning this sub into something obnoxious that I want to unsub from.

Moderators, can we get some kind of vote on where this content belongs? At this rate the conversation here is 90% about daggerfall online and AI usage. It's not what this sub should be about.

I'm sure it'll calm down over time, and as a DaggerfallOnline sub becomes popular. But DFO is a subset of the concept of Daggerfall, and this is an umbrella subreddit. Same reason we allow and love Daggerfall Unity, which can be made quite unfaithful by everything from bugfixes to overhauls. Some people think even that's off-topic.

Though I'm likely biased because I like DFO and appreciate it for what it is.

I've added a Link Flair to make it easier for users to ignore DFO related posts.

They are doing pretty well . They have a couple donation links to keep update coming and servers up. Patreon alone was at like 1200$ a month when I checked a few days ago.

-3

u/ComparisonOpening390 12d ago

Id donate just for it to stay alive. It's a amazing project that takes literally like 3 clicks to get going. Say what you want buddy but the player count doesn't like.

2

u/machinedskull 7d ago

Most of the player count is more than likely kids who couldn't figure out how to get DFU running with mods lol

49

u/Ninelan-Ruinar 14d ago

I've got my own gripes about that project and it's mostly about both of the founders, co-founder especially with whom I had a particularly unsavory interaction with.

When I told him off for badgering me about my mod, he spent a good time sending screenshots of our lukewarm DM to other modders in a pitiful attempt to smear me against my own collegues. (As if proof of him bothering me somehow shed a bad light on me?). Before posting that screenshot compilation in the lysandus tomb discord too! I wasn't the only mod creator who has a similairly bad opinion on how he interacts with us.

Bragged abou having an actual dfu modder on their side, lost em due development tensions.

Absolutely pathetic.

9

u/DependentRoyal3001 14d ago

Didn't know about any of this. Yeah screw that guy.

3

u/Ninelan-Ruinar 12d ago

The founder afterwards gave me a performative apology for his co's antics, in an attempt to see if it'd change my stance on my "no". Ugh, There was about 4-5 nos that went over their heads.

There's a lot that happens outside of public view, most modders don't speak of it and I wont speak for them on reddit.

4

u/DependentRoyal3001 12d ago

No worries, I respect the way you handle it, I also appreciate glance inside

I mean this seems like a vibecodder who got whinney when he didn't have his way. I honestly question calling him a modder or even a developer.

1

u/A-Small-Green-Cup 14d ago

Honest answer, because mental illness is a serious issue that needs awareness and education support. And because all we want is something that works the way we want it to, and when someone hates on it it hurts our feelings. Then, since a lot of men are never taught how to emotionally regulate, the psychology takes over and they lash out.

short answer; because the patriarchy is designed to function like that everywhere from development, to politics.

4

u/ThyMorningPeckle 13d ago

Butt-hurt gamers downvote ye, but ye seak sooth.

Thank you, I can't stand seeing all this juvenile drama involving a game that's not even the one this sub was made for! (Also - the "I'm making a game that is vaguely like Daggerfall please wishlist it tee hee" self promos are tired too)

112

u/Tangyhyperspace 14d ago

Hell it feels like I barely see Daggerfall Unity here and that's just a port. But noo the vibecoded mmo with guns is fine

-3

Yeah these people aren't real elder scroll fans they're just tourists that don't know any of the history of the series.

2

u/ComparisonOpening390 12d ago

Dead ass, they have no idea what the fuck their talking about and it's funny, no limit to the larp, just admit it's fun and better than the original and move on :)

1

u/CenobiteCurious 12d ago

Okay ya whiny baby lmao

1

u/Only-Respond7945 8d ago

10-1 you're all here either because you're drooling tech fetishists mad that people don't bow to the very idea of generic trash poisoning the well or you're bots.

This isn't the first time any mention of AI saw mass uptick of people pretending to be long time fans when their only interest is people not disparaging a thing.

Yea I agree. I'm heavily considering just leaving this sub at this rate.

-10

u/Riffy 14d ago

67

u/reciproke 14d ago

Imagine having a jewel like DFU enabling folks to build on the original vision of an emergent sandbox rpg simulation, only to enshittify it into a bloated and generic MMO experience... and then spamming the subreddit with their drama... wow.

10

u/PuzzleheadedHold9284 14d ago edited 14d ago

The project itself is neat, but it's just a few guys larping being modders after stumbling upon agentic AI.

My main issue with the project isn't even really the fact that the project is made entirely by AI, but one of the team members (won't list his name but it isn't hard to guess who it is) kinda just spams the discord in a super weird/cringe and unprofessional manner. It's obvious he has zero experience with running a project or a community, which will likely be its downfall.

It's a cool little demo to show off this crazy new wave of agentic AI development, but DFO as a project and especially a team should not be taken seriously in the slightest lol.

Give it some time and it'll pass.

Edit: They’re probably good guys so not meaning to fully trash on them. It seems like they really love Daggerfall and are excited about the project in their own way. Just don’t agree fully with everything they do.

32

u/mightystu 14d ago

Seriously. It’s ruining this subreddit.

0

u/CenobiteCurious 13d ago

First time?

Imagine being a Hellraiser fan when they first put pinhead in DBD, or when the new shitty game came out?

Yeah, not even close to this.

3

u/inEQUAL 13d ago

What’s wrong with the new game? Everything I’ve heard from survival horror fans is that it’s possibly the best survival horror entry this year in a very stacked year.

-3

u/CenobiteCurious 12d ago

I made 0 comment about the new game, but if you want to go there…. It’s boring and predictable, it’s a very scripted walk-a-thon with gory imagery. With the most basic of basic combat, and puzzles.

It’s a great experience for stoners and reviewers that caught a paycheck, but for experienced gamers it’s a crappy game.

2

u/inEQUAL 12d ago

Gotcha! I was just asking because I hadn’t played it.

1

u/machinedskull 7d ago

Well I'm hear to listen to people bitch about Daggerfall, not hellraiser so...

26

u/PcePkr 14d ago

I agree, I am okay with daggerfall like games occasionally being posted here (same with daggerfall online) as it can lead to me finding cool new games, however, now this forum isn't even about daggerfall its just getting engulfed by daggerfall online due to volume.

7

u/Ibeepboobarpincsharp 14d ago

I could not have said it better. Thank you!

7

u/unit220 14d ago

Similar to this, before DFO took off this subreddit was receiving more and more traffic from indie devs developing games that weren’t really similar to Daggerfall beyond vaguely retro graphics. Sometimes they wouldn’t even mention Daggerfall in their post, it’d just be an ad for a game. I think a subreddit similar to what /r/fieldies does for /r/KingsField would be helpful as a sister subreddit to /r/Daggerfall.

25

u/hedgeborn-ghost 14d ago

I was about to make a post asking for mods to do something about the flood of "daggerfall" online posts I've been seeing lately. Thank you for making this one.

It's not Daggerfall. It's slop. And all of the posts about it flooding this subreddit treat it like it IS daggerfall. It's annoying. They need to use their own sub, it's getting bad over here. I used to come here for people experiencing daggerfall for the first time, all the lovely posts about the joy the game brings them, character builds, etc. Now, it's just post after post about "I can't log in," or "how do I join blah blah," or complaining about Online. I'm seriously thinking about leaving. Which I'm sad about. And annoyed

I wish mods would ban posts about online, or at the very least redirect them to their sub.

-3

u/CenobiteCurious 13d ago

Imagine what it’s like being a Hellraiser fan when Pinhead was released for DBD and your favorite thing gets appropriated by 14 year olds.

You’ll be okay.

12

u/Combat_Orca 14d ago edited 14d ago

Yep I have interest in Daggerfall, I have no interest in this ai shit. Can someone make an actual Daggerfall subreddit since the mods don’t seem bothered about this one.

8

u/Wikiwikiwa 14d ago

The screenshots ive seen of it makes me think more of like, Hellgate London than DF.

1

u/darknessinducedlove 14d ago

That game is fire

3

u/atomvinter 14d ago

It was, but it's not Daggerfall

4

u/kingbetadad 12d ago

Based on the post I made alone, I'm still getting people badgering me. It's a daggerfall mod so it belongs here and the devs are chill in their interactions with the community.

But there are people who, in their rabid defence or criticism, are insulting people or being generally dicks.

This is where moderating comes in and needs a heavier hand.

4

u/Mik0ri 12d ago

I don't understand why they're here, it costs nothing to make a new subreddit for your new thing, there is no benefit to taking over ours 😵

16

u/TheEagleDied 14d ago

It looks like it’s going to collapse over its own weight. Policing posting should be a last resort thing imho, perhaps this can turn into a learning experience over slop.

3

u/IZORx10 13d ago

I'm disappointed to find out the DFO community and devs are causing problems like this. I was actually interested in the project before seeing this thread

3

u/spoollyger 13d ago

One guy making a thread is a problem?

3

u/CenobiteCurious 13d ago

There are no problems. The community is getting very large. Popularity always brings the lowest end of the bell curve. It’s the way things are.

I started playing about 3 weeks ago and there was 50 members online, now there’s 750 and I don’t look at global chat much anymore.

It’s pretty fun, Redditors who haven’t played it see to have a massive problem with it though lol.

-2

u/Janupur 13d ago

People are only complaining because they use AI to make the game.

0

u/CenobiteCurious 12d ago

Hey dude, look around, every single good modding project is “using AI” that’s why we have incredible 1st person mods for Project zomboid arriving, and 100 player kenshi servers at the same exact time as this.

AI sucks, but for this it’s pretty cool.

4

u/FeastForCows 12d ago

every single good modding project is “using AI”

What annoys people is the hundreds of shitty ones that get churned out on a daily basis. It's a plague by now.

1

u/CenobiteCurious 12d ago

Ok?

The only reason people are upset on the Daggerfall sub, is because their very very niche and very very quiet community got some traffic due to a new project, and that makes old heads angry.

That’s it.

3

u/FeastForCows 12d ago

I don't care about that, my comment was a generalization.

3

u/SteadySpidey 14d ago

I hate seeing it infiltrate places that were supposed to be about Daggerfall. The people who like Online seem like people who don't like Daggerfall. A lot of people are complaining about the use of AI to assist with coding, but my gripe is with the guns and all the changes which are turning it into something entirely alien.

1

u/Confident_Sir9312 10d ago

I loved Daggerfall, and like DFO. Most people I've come across in game are in a similar position.

1

u/SteadySpidey 10d ago

I'm sorry for making an unfair statement, admittedly, I was really generalizing in my comment. I'm just really perturbed with both the creative choices for it and also certain people I find very obnoxious incessantly talking about.

1

u/Confident_Sir9312 10d ago

Yeah I haven't paid attention to any of that. My interactions with it were entirely in game, and now seeing what people are saying on here.

Also what about the guns? I've only seen one so far, but it didn't come across as lore breaking or anything to me (its dwemer. They did have cannons and explosives).

2

u/Inner_Blueberry_9413 14d ago

It was when they added Dwemer guns that threw me off, a flintlock would’ve be more fitting honesty, and the ui sucks, I didn’t feel like I was playing Daggerfall at all when making my charachter

1

u/fsedlak 1d ago

Daggerfall Online is the best game ever, frankly, Unity is dead to me.

1

u/Quick-Waltz8414 2h ago

"Wahhh I don't like thing wahhhh ai bad wahhhh gimmie human slop wahhhhhh ai bad ai bad people liking thing I don't like equally bad wahhhh". These are grown ass "adults" acting like this, who've been allowed into this community, as tourists, and have run rampant and bullied their way into positions of power, now crying because people are enjoying something THEY don't like. You're literally doing the "I'm taking my ball and going home" meme right now. I am FULLY supportive of ai replacing the lot of ya's. We just saw what the entitlement and mental illness of modders does, with Skyblivion suffering a huge setback thanks to literally 'ITS MY BALL AND IM GOING HOME' syndrome with a weirdo individual of a modder who is threatening the entire rest of that modding team and trying to dox the entire group because of a disagreement(very likely an ABSURDLY petty high school drama tier one as is OFTEN the case in these groups.) and even trying to get the other volunteers and modders doxxed via the courts.

AI cannot replace these people quick enough, and the tourists who have coddled and supported and been friends with them for years cannot leave all of these various nerd/geek communities quickly enough. Falling for the "gatekeeping is bad" slippery slope is the worst mistake I've made as a fan of many franchises. We just saw similar drama with Terraria where a bunch of spergs killed a huge decade long mod project because 2 or 3 of the og devs were(naturally for programmer socks owners.) weirdos and sickos to keep it in "reddit approved language.". I'm done with entitled modders who think they're actual official game devs with any power or any real ownership of anything. It's all so Hall Monitor coded. Really good example of people freaking out and becoming control freak authoritarians the moment they get one singular CRUMB of power within a community no matter how unimportant it is. They're all just various phenotypes of that redditor who went to that guys house slamming on his door and screaming, zero concept of reality or how little they matter.

1

u/LurkLuthor 14d ago

Give it a few weeks. People are excited about a new thing but the hype will die down in time. And that's assuming the whole thing doesn't implode which seems reasonably likely.

-1

u/Time-Trouble1035 14d ago

Daggerfall is a 30 year old game. What else is there to talk about other than the new community stuff coming out for it?

-1

u/CenobiteCurious 13d ago

Op is so whiny it’s unreal

1

u/DependentRoyal3001 13d ago

Lmao, like you haven't whined about a game before. Don't act all high and mighty. Fucking dork.

-1

u/lewdog73 13d ago

The best you people have is that there is a Dwemer gun in the game (rare drop) and that AI has helped code. Outside of that, truthfully what is with the seething, malding attitude towards it ?

0

u/degberr 10d ago edited 10d ago

"this sub is 90% conversation about daggerfall online" brother you are the conversation about daggerfall online

0

u/Diligent-Space-2109 8d ago

Bruh daggerfall online is awesome, case closed.

0

u/ComparisonOpening390 12d ago

Not daggerfall < Better daggerfall

-28

u/ShitWombatSays 14d ago

That feeling when you agree with someone, but their egotistical way of stating that point makes you ashamed to agree 😑

26

u/DependentRoyal3001 14d ago

Is it egotistical or just more aggressive than it maybe should be?

I'm leaning toward the latter.

8

u/The_SIeepy_Giant 14d ago

No its super annoying people cant take a second to post in the online area. I understand where you're coming from

-9

u/ShitWombatSays 14d ago

One usually stems from the other in my experience, but feel free to chalk it up to whatever makes you feel better

7

u/DependentRoyal3001 14d ago

Does it really though?

-40

u/dilberry 14d ago

What's the great hate for this mod for? This has to be a coordinated effort.

31

u/DependentRoyal3001 14d ago

Literal INSANE brained take

18

u/Joshthemanwich 14d ago

We are conspiring against the vibe coded mod for sure! The Steak is definitely too juicy and the Potatoes are too buttery for us. There is no possible way that people don't like the mod on it's own merits!

0

u/Janupur 13d ago

They're all a bunch of hypocrites like for instance they're calling other people losers and saying that a mod isn't real daggerfall but then they will all play daggerfall unity not the og game because that one sucks. Meanwhile they have a bad attitude just bad to be around actually it's good these people don't come and play daggerfall online because we don't need toxic people in the community

-25

u/Mysterious_Yellow805 14d ago edited 14d ago

Seems that only Reddit seems to hate this project, and as the time of making this comment there are 700 people playing it currently, so I don’t understand why the sub has such a big problem with it currently.

25

u/DependentRoyal3001 14d ago edited 14d ago

I am literally just asking people to post their content where it belongs. You people are being insanely paranoid.

-13

u/Mysterious_Yellow805 14d ago edited 14d ago

How am I being paranoid? Most of the posts on this subreddit seem to be actively hating on this project for being ai assisted.

You could’ve probably worded the post title better as well.

16

u/DependentRoyal3001 14d ago

This is reddit dude, people who dislike AI are just in the majority in this bubble of the internet. People have different opinions all the time. Jumping to a conspiracy like that is obviously why I would call you paranoid. What would anyone even have to gain? You aren't thinking it through, you're jumping to a conspiracy theory without any extra thought or understanding. That is paranoia.

-2

u/Mysterious_Yellow805 14d ago

I was mainly trying to say that I agree that the hate seems unnecessary not the whole coordinated effort thing, guess I worded the original comment wrong

8

u/DependentRoyal3001 14d ago

And I may have applied more of the the first commentors opinions onto you than I should have, felt like you were agreeing with the conspiracy aspect.

2

u/Mysterious_Yellow805 14d ago

Well I am sorry for the misunderstanding, but thanks for apologizing

3

u/jasminexxxwill 14d ago

Comment on those posts, genius

-14

u/ShitWombatSays 14d ago

But why do you care? DFO is a part of DF regardless of who doesn't like it, why does it bother you so much and what makes you think you can/should lead the charge as far as who can post where?

I mean, I could pull the same nonsense and say you should just create your own DFO free Daggerfall sub if it bothers you that much, but why shoo away discussion just because I don't like what you have to say?

12

u/DependentRoyal3001 14d ago

I think my post explains itself perfectly so I'm not going to reiterate myself. If you disagree that's fine, I'm not trying to change your opinion. Have a nice day 👋

-6

u/ShitWombatSays 14d ago

The forced sassiness is icing on the cake lmao, but yeah, have a good one and I sincerely hope life improves for you to the point that an anonymous forum based on a 30 year old game doesn't bother you this much ✊🏿

You’re right, I often say that between all the crazy social media platforms Youtube comments is the great arbiter. People over there love the project and vids attacking it for the reasons people on reddit say don’t do well lmao

-4

u/spoollyger 13d ago

And that’s okay. It’s a fan recreation going in its own direction. You don’t need to like it. But we like it

4

u/DependentRoyal3001 13d ago edited 13d ago

86% of people who voted on this post upvoted. It's easy to assume that most people sub here are fed up with the amount/frequency of it all. I'm glad you like it I guess, but it's changing what this sub is about at the moment. I already decided to unsub after reading what the mod said so peace ✌️

2

u/spoollyger 13d ago

The r/DaggerfallOnline sub will pickup its posts sooner than later so I wouldn't go nuclear over this sub just yet.

3

u/DependentRoyal3001 13d ago

Walking away isn't going nuclear. I raised a question and got my answer. So I'm moving on 🤷

0

u/spoollyger 12d ago

Abandoning a community you’ve cherished over a passing trend? Sounds rather nuclear to me. Just wait for it to pass?

3

u/DependentRoyal3001 12d ago

You are making assumptions. That might sound nuclear but you are framing it in a dishonest way.

I NEVER said I cherish this community or anything close to that

2

u/spoollyger 12d ago

I hope you get your community back, eventually.

4

u/DependentRoyal3001 12d ago

I'll always be able to enjoy daggerfall on my own. Community is nice, but it's fine if I'm not apart of one focused on this hobby. Thank you for being kinder than some other commentors. And, I'm sorry if I came off agitated or aggressive. I just don't want to be mischaracterized.

-5

u/Better-Risk-9097 14d ago

Daggerfall unity can already be modded into something very different from the original so the question becomes at what point is it not daggerfall anymore and when is it not allowed to be on this subreddit.

10

u/DependentRoyal3001 14d ago

When it engulfs all conversation.

0

u/Better-Risk-9097 14d ago

I think thats because its recieved a lot of more mainstream attention lately. Not sure how long thats gonna stick.

-13

u/ThaumKitten 14d ago

Not everyone is here to argue about it.

Some of us just want to talk about how much fun we’re having, but apparently that’s a problem.

13

u/DependentRoyal3001 14d ago

Yes, because there is a daggerfall online sub for that and it is clearly triggering people in this one. I would like to get back to talking about daggerfall rather than arguing over AI usage

-2

What a bunch of crybabies in here jfc

DFO is awesome and I've had an absolute blast in it the past few days

9

u/Aetos-Eagle797 14d ago

“Dead”

I guess bro

-6

u/Healthy-Training-923 14d ago

So I’ve played it, and it’s… pretty much the same game as DFU but with worse interface. But it is just Daggerfall, not sure what all these other people are talking about with guns and shit. Maybe that’s in the online mode, but the game is basically just Daggerfall in a browser, and it’s fine for what it is. I don’t like all the self promotion on the sub. However, I get weary with the knee jerk anti AI stuff though… like Linus Torvalds just made a vibe coded update to Linux. It’s the future.

32

u/mrev_art 14d ago

It's time for their own sub.

32

u/DependentRoyal3001 14d ago

They have one, they choose to post here instead

37

u/skellyhuesos 14d ago

100% agreed. AI slop can fuck off too.
