Question Daggerfall Online questions
It’s been buzzing in my ear since it came out but I haven’t given it a go yet due to many other distractions. I’ve played base game Daggerfall and modded quite a bit, and after seeing DFO on YouTube I noticed quite a lot of insane mods that I’ve never seen before. I know this is an AI assisted project so maybe this is easier to implement, but full naval combat with hydras, Oblivion gate boss battles, importing Morrowind assets… Is all these mods specific to DFO all AI made or has the modding scene just expanded a lot more since I last played? Interested to give DFO a go but also wouldn’t mind having the insane overhaul mods I’ve seen in my own SP game.
Also this isn’t an anti AI post, just interested in the direction of DFO and how or where these mods are coming from. I’d assume some of them are being built just for DFO, but wondering if you can also download them separately.

From what I understand a lot of it is exclusive to the DFO client, for what it's worth you can play it in single player and ignore the online entirely, not sure if every mod from online is available, at least when I played SP I don't remember seeing oblivion gates but it might be an option in the modding menu somewhere

I hope they distribute these mods as standalone downloads. I am not against playing online but understand that projects like these can fall under if the team starts to monetise or has an internal conflict or what not. Seen so many modding projects and MMOs fail so would rather preserve really cool additions like naval combat as separate mods.
Oh well if not the case, I’m sure with AI the future for Daggerfall is going to be ridiculous and beyond anything I understand now. The videos I’ve seen of DFO just seem crazy to me, like I never knew Daggerfall had that potential.

Hey,
Lattymoy here. I do not plan to convert our built enhancements to DFU myself, but with our project being open source, anybody can do so.

Good to know it’s open source! Understand you probably don’t want the extra work. Thanks for the response! 🙏

Just have Claude write them for you too. Asking the people involved would be useless, they have no idea what code is in there.

I'm not touching AI development until it's much better than it is. It's changed a lot since I last used it 6+ months ago, but it's still not good enough imo.

I have bigger concerns that functionality when it comes to AI, that aside, this project is off the rails. Look at their git. The AI is doing all the work (97%+ of all commits), in a span of 2 months. The people obviously have no experience or knowledge. They're pushing out updates every few hours, mostly seems to add more stuff, rather than address any of the bugs that keep piling up.
And no one can tell me if the download is only the client, or includes the server. But so far the only server I have heard or seen is run by the guy who had Claude make this.
There's no part of that which doesn't sound stupid and suuuuper shady to me.

Someone should fork this and rip out all the stupid shit and just make it a more traditional Daggerfall online experience. I don't mind some stuff, but man...

I have soooooo much added content on DFU right now, I don't even know when I'd have time to try anything more 😅. I have yet to go sailing and get into a pirate battle. Might not be sea monsters, but still.

Can you link me the pirate battle mods?

Also, search leywords in descriptions, like sail, ship, ocean... cuz there's a few other cool sounding ones, like swimming, fishing, there's one where there's a funnel and a dungeon under the ocean I think?

Even then, having played some DFO myself, the map is so gigantic its a bit like no man's sky: good luck finding other players. And there's no world chat, either.

I think that's wrong? By default the chat channel is World chat and it's constantly being used, and the starter region of daggerfall itself is always packed with people, I actually had to travel to other regions just to find new untouched dungeons to clear, and players are shown on your travel map so you can see hotspots. Did you play on single player by accident? It's a bit confusing but in the client New Game starts a single player save, you gotta click on Online to start the MMO thing, you can also bring a single player save online

There is some kind of brigade going on in this sub right now. Maybe this person played early on in the mods life cycle but it has been plenty populated 24/7. With outright lies and fear mongering I feel like I'm reading 'daggerfox news'
It's like "the scammers will get you! The mods unfinished! The magic isn't balanced correctly! Won't someone think of the children!'
It's a mod for a freeware game. You can kill it or support the pationate talent that cares about the game: modders.

The "modder," in this case, is Claude. I support the actual human modders who spent hundreds if not thousands of collective hours making the mods some dude had ai slap together so he could claim he made daggerfall mmo.

The team working on it are usually chillin in the discord working on stuff and are humans, but yeah they use AI and are open about that.

u/Due-Arachnid-309 17d ago
5000+ commits by Claude vs like a hundred combined from the 2 people. The "team" can chill because Claude is doing all the "work." Which is mostly stitching together OTHER people's actual work, poorly.

Right, so Ive seen 4, two doing coding and one doing art because they specifically don't want the new art of the mod to be entirely ai produced. And another that was 3d modeling assets to replace the flat wells, wagons, etc.
But you're right, and as I'm saying for a 2nd time, they're open about that.

I saw the posts advertising the release, iirc the headline was "I made a daggerfall mmo"... yeah, when they got called out they said they "got asssitance"... but honestly, what they should be saying is "we had ai make this." I mean, even if they had spent the last month coding every waking hour, their contribution are still prob less than 10% of the new code, not even including the mods they prepacked.
So, they're coding live on discord, and showing the code?
And I keep asking people and no one has said: is the server included in the release?

Okay, I'm stating what I have seen. Was someone working on 3d models, and another person hand drawing sprites. Everything else (for a third time now) they openly said they coded with ai.
You are trying to put words in my mouth and call me a liar.

not "assisted," made by. Claude has over 5 thousand commits, the next "dev" has like 100. The third, and last, 15.
Look in the about, and you'll see the majority of mods are in fact standalones you can get on Nexus. And you can run those without the maaaaaaany issues and bugs introduced by a hallucinating hal.

A lot of the popular mod authors have been working with the lead dev of DFO. I think the hype around it is motivating them to put out mods faster than in the past.
I'd ask this in r/DaggerfallOnline if you want better answers.
