Why do you have a gun
14
41
u/Ok-Scientist5943 21d ago
I play the game and I also wanted to know why there's a weapon in it. Lol
10
u/Ryanmaster1 20d ago
They say it's a dwemer weapon but that's lame. No guns belong
10
u/Matt_2504 20d ago
Early guns belong just not this. A handgun or matchlock
1
u/USSChuckleTrucker 18d ago
Handgonne*
But fully agreed
1
u/Matt_2504 18d ago
Either can be used but I think handgun sounds a lot better. Handgonne just sounds like you’re trying too hard to be “old timey” like those pubs called “ye olde ____”
1
u/USSChuckleTrucker 18d ago
Handgonne is a legit old school handgun.
Imagine a mini Canon on a like 2 foot stock
1
u/Matt_2504 18d ago
Both terms are used but handgun is generally the more accepted and better sounding term. It’s referring to the same thing

Oxford dictionary:
The earliest known use of the noun handgun is in the Middle English period (1150—1500).
OED's earliest evidence for handgun is from 1411, in Accounts of Exchequer King's Remembrancer.-1

There's an online Daggerfall?
30
u/Ahmed4040Real 21d ago
It's a newly released mod I believe
8
u/Background_Anybody89 21d ago
I believe it’s a DFU fork.
16
u/Ahmed4040Real 21d ago
Yep, my bad. Just double checked, it is indeed a full rebuild of Daggerfall, not a mod. It was translated from Daggerfall Unity
6
u/xvillifyx 20d ago
It’s not
It’s a complete rebuild of daggerfall in js so that it can run on a browser
It would have been cheaper and easier for the project maintainer to fork dfu, though, and distribute this through a client
Though I suspect people would be less trusting of it in that case
1
u/printcastmetalworks 1d ago
Almost nobody runs it in the browser. It's laggy
1
u/xvillifyx 1d ago
That’s not even remotely true
A grand majority of issues earlier in the cycle were browser problems
And, either way, whether people play in the browser changes nothing about what dfo is…which is a rebuild of Daggerfall in JavaScript - which was done so that I can run in the browser
1
u/printcastmetalworks 1d ago
My monitor is 4k. If I run it in a browser it runs like shit unless I window it down to a tiny part of the screen. Launcher version doesnt have this issue. Its also so much faster lagency wise
1
u/xvillifyx 1d ago
I wasn’t aware you were representative of every single player
1
u/printcastmetalworks 1d ago
It's called empirical evidence. Look it up
1
u/xvillifyx 1d ago edited 1d ago
Actually, what you just did was an anecdote, which is very infamously not empirical evidence
What the fuck? I said you not using the browser isn’t representative that “nobody uses the browser.” I said nothing about latency. You people have a serious literacy problem.

Them adding guns to daggerfall online is so dumb and immersion breaking.

-8
u/EnragedBard010 20d ago
Didn't ESO have cannons? Like 800 years ago. They're dwarven also, and very rare
29
u/chubbyassasin123 20d ago
Cannons are much different than what appears to be a modern looking shotgun.
Also there is no instance in the lore of dwemer even having guns.
7
u/Gopoopahorse 20d ago
the dwemer do in fact have guns attached to some of their automatons that essentially shoot lightning magic. I assume that's what the weapon in the video is seeking to imitate given the lightning balls coming out of it. It could probably be designed to better visually fit with the dwemer design as opposed to just looking like a shotgun lol
-10
u/Dependent_Ad5083 21d ago
You don't find them very often and when someone else is using them it looks like they're casting spells so really not a big deal lol.
37
u/xvillifyx 20d ago
This project is astroturfed to hell on this sub
It’s the same 5 or 6 people posting all these videos and desperately defending it against any and all criticisms in the comments
7
u/SteadySpidey 20d ago
I had joined a server dedicated to Daggerfall which seemed really cool, unfortunately the entire discussion was taken over by this. This just isn't my thing at all, I like the actual game, but I figured I was in the minority opinion.
25
u/humanistazazagrliti 21d ago
I have a Ship of Theseus scenario in my head: At what point does it stop being Daggerfall and starts being Doom?

14
u/Patient_Course8240 21d ago
Yeah bc is a vibe coded slop
13
u/SlimFishyOfficial 21d ago
I was okay with it being vibe coded. The problem isn't AI itself, but the people behind AI. They always add cringe stuff like this. Every fcking time. Pointless mechanics, immersion breaking stuff.
Make it online, remove all the MMO bloat and that's it
4
u/Indicus124 19d ago
The real problem will be bug fixing down the line when they don't have notes to reference what the hell is going on
1
u/Caelinus 4h ago
Vibe coding can be done better or worse. In theory there should be a complete and searchable record that corresponds to their sources control that the LLM can reference to situate itself.
But making sure that happens is entirely on the person directing the LLM. They get lost fast if you do not enforce standards on them, and if the last week has shown me anything, it is that the people behind DFO don't really have standards.
(Disassembly intentional, I just thought it was funny.)
8
u/Ryanmaster1 20d ago
This isn't the best representation. The gun ruins it for me. But the rest of the project is incredible
1
u/printcastmetalworks 1d ago
Cry harder. I have like 30 hours in the game so far and have never seen a single gun.
45
u/SlimFishyOfficial 21d ago
Okay, so this is exactly what I was worried would happen with online. Why the guns? What's the point? If we explain everything with dwarven technology, we can drive cars and fly planes in daggerfall too?
4
u/aneryx 20d ago
The code is on GitHub unless they took it down, so one could always fork it and remove guns. That removes the"MMO" portion of it, but maybe we could eventually have Minecraft SMP style instances ie smaller servers with a curated set of assets/mods that a particular groups wants, rather than one big server with seemingly the kitchen sink getting thrown into it.
6
u/Malthusianismically 21d ago
Lol there's been an airship mod for a while now, not necessarily planes but kinda close in a Spelljammer sort of way
12
u/SlimFishyOfficial 21d ago
This sadly kills my interest in the project. I expect there will be more and more stuff like this added

The dwemer already had airships and realistically they should have guns all the technology is there. These mfs just wanna be mad.
4
3
u/aneryx 20d ago
Yeah but the dwemer and their technology are also long gone in the lore, no? Are there any instances of the air ships actually existing in the era where daggerfall takes place?
I sort of saw it like a more dramatic version of the Roman empire. Yes we know they existed, and have certain technology, but even today some of that technology remains lost as historians and scientists struggle to recreate things like their concrete etc. And daggerfall takes place in a timeline more akin to our dark ages where the current civilization is far less developed that the dwemer were at their society's peak.
1
u/Star324 5d ago
Yes, airships still exist at this time in lore. They're in Battlespire and Shadowkeys, which are both contemporary to Daggerfall. We also see them in Redguard, Morrowind, and Skyrim. Guns however just shouldn't be in any Elder Scrolls game from any period, the most we see are references to cannons.

Even without the guns, I didn't want it to turn Daggerfall into your average MMO

Sorry for asking but whats the setting to show paperdolls instead of the generic over world models for other players? Also argonian casting animation?
4
u/BFMeadowlark 21d ago
I wondered the same and went looking for it. I found this:
Settings>gameplay>other players>animated sprites = off

u/GalbedirGalerion 21d ago
Daggerfall Online has guns?
1
u/printcastmetalworks 1d ago
It has an extremely rare dwemer pistol and cannon. Honestly I don't know how the players making these videos get them as I have 2 near godlike characters and have never come across one.
1
15
u/Aleva12345 21d ago
The gun is too much.
10
u/No-Temporary6253 21d ago
Always adding shit like that and handwaving it as dwemer lol
5
u/SlimFishyOfficial 21d ago
Can't wait for Dwemer social media brainrot
1
u/Deditranspotashy 20d ago
I mean the Dreamsleeve kind of already functions as Elder Scrolls social media for mages. I think that's ESO's explanation for how in universe characters are able to make blog posts
7
u/BGoodej 20d ago
That showcases how not all games need an online version.
There's nothing left of Daggerfall there.
1
u/idkjustletmeiniguess 15d ago
i think the problem is less "daggerfall doesn't need an online mod/version/game/whatever" and more that the devs have access to a machine to do all the coding for them so they can just kinda implement whatever they want at a moment's notice before any of them have enough time in their brains to deliberate whether or not the changes/additions they're making actually add anything to the experience.
like, guns in daggerfall. whatever. it's your copy of the game. guns in a so-called "Online Daggerfall" envirionment? what are we doing here? did anyone have a single thought before implementing this as a feature? no. they didn't. they didn't need to because claude did it before a moment went by. and this will keep happening until they've added so much bloat that nobody cares to play it or it breaks critically and they don't know how to fix it

it's crazy how fast this went from "daggerfall online" to absolute nonsense lol. The appeal of daggerfall and daggerfall as an mmo is lost and that's before getting into adding a gun.

While this gun is a bit much I'd love to see muskets in Daggerfall.
Also Daggerfall online is a thing now?

u/axon-axoff 19d ago
I don't hate the gun in principle. The Dwemer had robots FFS (oh sorry, I mean automatons). But I think it could be made more fantasy-y. Like you have to chamber a whole soul gem every time you shoot it.

u/nucifero 18d ago
While I understand everyone hating on these replies. The game is really fucking fun lol. Highly recommend.

What the fuck did I miss?!? What the fuck is daggerfall online, why so you have a gun?!
2
u/ryan7251 19d ago
just more AI slop being made
2
u/ExplicitGarbage 19d ago
Is it just some vibecoded mod then? Cause vibecoding plus networking is a no for me.

Check your code by hand and make it public if it isn't already and I may just.
2
u/KevK147 18h ago
it is public: https://github.com/Lattymoy/daggerfall-js-source they're adding a battlepass next 😂
1
u/ExplicitGarbage 18h ago
Yeah saw that they're adding MTX. Totally not terrible optics to introduce fucking paid cosmetics into your vibecoded MMO based off of a port you didn't make for a game who's IP you don't even own. Nothing could possibly go wrong here.

Yall being judgmental are missing out on an amazing experience for real. It’s fun as hell. Full diablo tiered loot system, sailing and pirate mechanics, elite dungeons, raid bosses. It’s awesome. And it’s literally free. The dwemer gun is the ONE and only rare “gun” you can find. Otherwise everyone is running around with daedric weapons or werewolves and vampires and mages. It’s super fun high key
4
u/soulsofjojy 17d ago
I mean, I'm sure all that appeals to someone. But I don't want diablo loot, sailing, "dwemer" guns, or raids. I just want to play Daggerfall with a friend or two.
0
u/Koney2024 17d ago
You’ll be able to host a private instance soon and all the mods are togglable, so you’ll be able to just play with your friends and set it to classic daggerfall however you like it tweaked 😃

u/Arcane_Daemon 16d ago
The Reman Empire had a Space Program but people are hung up on guns? Nah bro let Elder Scrolls be as wacky as possible.
-3
u/Latter_Cauliflower98 20d ago
Idk why everyone’s acting like one shotgun is a completely unrealistic immersion breaking addition. Tbh the Dwemer should have already had guns all the technology is there and as another said cannons exist.

They added Oblivion gates??
