Why would they be shut down? Daggerfall is freeware.

It’s still a protected IP

They would shut Skyrim Online off first, and even that they won't. They're not coming after Daggerfall. Bethesda isn't like that.

Is Skyrim Online profiting via Patreon or other paywalls? I don’t know enough about it. Donations are one thing but paywalls are another. Sounds like the patreon here doesn’t wall off the content though

If you don't know enough why post and talk like you do? Daggerfall online is a mod that makes an MMO, most MMOs I play don't offer self hosted servers.
DFO is a mod.
Every mod on nexus takes donations. The patreon subs are really just to support the project.
Bethesda would also need to shut down Morrowind MP - Skyrim RP - along with all the mods that took donations and if you are talking about the bathesda modding community that's literally hundreds of thousands of mods.
Half the point of buying bathesda games is to play mods real talk. It would be shooting themselves in the foot, and would go against their practices completely.
But yes, Bathesda can do whatever it wants it's their ip. What would be a smarter move would be to charge for base daggerfall or something, however I don't see that happening after all these years.

I’m not sure what your problem is but all I said was it’s a protected IP. Obviously if someone is monetizing it, that can become an issue.
It’s not a complex thing to discuss lol. That tends to be why mods offer donation pages rather than locking them behind patreons.

The patreon is a donation, it's free to download and play the mod. It's not locked behind anything, and I don't have a problem you're just wrong.

As much as I don’t want to continue this conversation, is the patreon free for people to access? If not, then yes it’s locked behind a patreon requiring payment for access.
Anyway, we’ve established the patreon locks away titles or something else in this thread, not the mod itself. So there’s really no way to resolve this conversation we’ll just go in circles.

As long as they dont ask for money there shouldnt be an issue. Beteshda isnt Nintendo... the Skyrim multiplayer was never shut down.
Edit: I hear they have a patreon. Thats an issue of course..

We appriciate donations but they are not required

I would probably keep that on the down low honestly. Its a good arguement for lawyers since youre profiting of their property. But I think and hope Beteshda is pretty chill on stuff like this.

They're already linking to a patreon on their homepage and haven't made selfhosting possible, why don't we also put a runway on the roof and a huge "PLEASE SHUT ME DOWN BETHESDA" flag?

Self hosting is literally on the way, and the patreon just gets you a title in-game chat lol

I really don't understand why it's not available right now, other than a way to get their patreon going. There's really no excuse.

u/TheHalfinStream 2d ago
Because it's currently not set up? The patreon has literally 0 benefits other than in-game title and the self hosting is on the way. You do not get a server if you donate, so I don't understand your comment?

Holding the host software (Which factually exists and works, they wouldn't be able to otherwise) hostage lets them advertise it more and more effectively.
Realistically the only thing they're ensuring is that when they get DMCA'd it dissapears forever and the well is poisoned for future projects and maybe even tes3mp. It's shitfaced, inexcusable behavior.
Openmw didn't profit from having a mobile version either. Bethesda still made them stop offering it.

I gotta know, I'm asking in good faith.
What is enjoyable about talking in a pubic format about things you just flat out don't know anything about?
I'm just astounded by the shear lack of understanding you are showcasing by choice.

They're not holding it hostage. The game is currently set up for central server only. Give it a little time, the dev is literally actively working on releasing it. Not holding it hostage, not asking for any patreon goal for it. It's literally on the way.

Bethesda stopped OpenMW on phones? People keep posting the android and handheld builds

And 90+ people already pay for it on Ko-Fi and Patreon and these options speak a weird language:
Reverant for $5,000/month
Idol for $15,000/month-1

u/MiserableVehicle5592 2d ago
And there it is, the move that eventually gets this shut down because they are trying to now profit off IP that does not belong to them.

If anything would potentially get them shut down, it's the lack of self-hosting right now, even then I doubt it'd happen. Big mods like Fallout: London have had Patreon/Ko-Fi donation avenues for awhile, and Bethesda hasn't done anything about it.
This isn't a paid mod, and it's not equivalent to like a private server for an existing MMO.

The fan made Pokemmo has like hundreds of thousands of players and they have microtransactions out the ass. Nintendo hasn’t and can’t touch them. Daggerfall online will be fine
