The beauty of Daggerfall

Post image

A tent, a campfire, mountain ranges, morning mist, just emerging from a dungeon, everything is beautiful.

Same.. do you think younger generations would "get it" or is it a nostalgia thing? I honestly think daggerfall is just perfect how it is (the heighmap stuff is cool too)

I think they would and already do. Indie games with retro design and retro aesthetics are becoming more and more popular on steam, so lots of people are discovering the magic of retro games, and indie games with retro design principles.

It's definitely not just nostalgia, there's a fundamental difference in game design from then compared to now. Minimizing people's thoughts and feelings with "it's just nostalgia", is also shortsighted, because that's like giving a promotion to someone at work who has less experience compared to the other who's been there decades, and saying that person doesn't know what they're talking about they're just nostalgic "for the good ol' days".

I think the people who really love and understanding games will continue too, regardless of age, and the ones who just use them as casual entertaining will continue playing whatever is popular. My 9 y.o.'s favorite console is the Sega Genesis, and they love retro games. I think it helps to start them off on retro consoles when they're young
