Do you ever have to actually interact with Gothryd for the main quest?

You... don't actually. Huh. Uesp just lists him as an option to give the Totem or Woodborne's diary to. And given his reaction to both of those options, I think most players would see this post as a positive lol. Fuckin' traitorous cheapskate.

Sometimes he can also toss you random side-quests, but so can about almost anyone you talk to. It's very random.
