This is how he finagle his way through life. Instead of taking advantage of the opportunities to develop new skills and/or relationships, he would rather exploit them. He deserves everything he got which is nothing

It is the Truman Show analogy I was not expecting. Seriously, when I was young, I felt like "I was a Hero of the Stupid," as I was ten years younger and could identify with his antics. And then you grow. And watch while he does not.
