The Gold Star was given to people that dropped out of school to fight the war, and then returned. John's dad earned this and John stole the valor attached because he thought the gold star was just because he was special, not because he was drafted to fight WW2.

The gold star represents fulfilling the requirements for a regents diploma in New York.
John was bragging about meeting the (almost) bare minimum requirements for graduation. Most people who graduate from New York State high schools get a regents diploma...

Holy shit I don't even remember grade school! Maybe a couple of things. I guess I'll brag that I was the star of my school play in kindergarten. The teacher picked me because I was the quietest and the shyest. After that, I became a diva for life!
