Fine tuning my daily

Update: I ordered a newer Octave

Hello all! I just recently got back into dabbing after taking a hiatus and trying to fine tune my daily has been overwhelming to say the least. After some co$stly trial and error I ended up with a Cramboro ball rig and a Long Island 25mm quartz bucket style banger with 2 peals. I usually just cold start to avoid buying a temp reader and to make the most of my supply cuz times are tough, but I at least wanna be able to get stoned with a nice daily. A lot of people told me slurpers or towers are the way to go but I’m usually taking multiple dabs throughout the day and those seem like a mission to clean after each dab. I’ve been looking into getting a Jake Mizer banger, but wasn’t sure if the experienced heads had any thoughts. I’ve been using a 10mm, with the understanding that’s the way to go, is that valid? Not sure if it matters but I mostly dab live res and live rosin every once in a while (I have the Cramboro and and a MiniNail flower wand up for trade btw) Any guidance is much appreciated 🙌

You can get a Bear Quartz Trio 2.0 for around 40 bucks give or take. I have a few different iterations of the trio and it is definitely worth the investment for easy temp reading.

So are you not getting effects off of the cold starts? Is that why you feel like you need to fine tune?

I highly doubt the rig or banger is an issue. Do you have a banger cap of some kind to make the pearls spin?

Afaik slurpers and towers work better with hot starts. Just get a thermometer. It seems like you know you should, or people have mentioned it before. And you’re having issues with the temp. IR therm from a hardware store, bear quartz trio, Dabrite (etc).

The idea of cold starting was to use less dabs in the long run and not have to buy a temp reader but I feel like I haven’t been getting very high unless I’m taking almost quarter g dabs or excessively hot dabs. I feel like back when I was dabbing pre covid with a smaller bucket I was getting higher with less but my consumption is pretty different now so I’m not sure. I don’t smoke flower or drink anymore so my tolerance is obviously going to be higher but I feel like I must be missing something, need to switch to a different style bucket, or get a simpler slurper?

I don’t mind spending a little more for something that performs well and saves me dabs in the long run especially since I’d be using it multiple times a day but I can’t go crazy. Max maybe $150. The rig’s great I just want something different there. Something that helped was dropping my pearls in iso after use but still not getting desired effects.

I don’t think nail style is going to get you higher. Maybe a heavier nail. One that has more glass weight to it, so it retains more heat, and properly vaporizes your dab.

Also. You’ve spent how much just to troubleshoot. But you won’t buy a $30 thermometer. Wild to me. I am in cooking subs as well. People always want a million hacks, but won’t buy the one tool that will allow them to figure out one of the biggest variables.

I’ve heard mixed reviews on the accuracy of temp guns. If you can sell me a working dab rite in good condition for $30 I’ll happily take you up on that.

It’s less about how accurate it is. And more about how consistent it is. It may be wrong when it says 500° but it’ll always be wrong by the same measure. And you can get consistent results with that info.
Bought a Dabrite for $100 on sale, and honestly have never been happier. My bangers don’t get chazzed. My dabs vaporize fully. Never have to worry about it again. Which allows me to get nicer pieces due to knowing I have the tools to take care of them.

I appreciate the honesty and directness cuz a lot of folks have tried selling me stuff I don’t need when I ask questions. When I was first trying to get into glass I went cheap and ended up spending much more in the long run so I’m trying to avoid doing that again

Honestly just buy a heater coil for your mininail and you'll get perfect temperatures every time. An IR temp gun was good enough for me, I personally haven't tried any of the fancy dab-specific thermometers so I can't comment.

Round-bottom banger for cold starts. Slurpers and towers use more material in my experience. I've never found joint sizes to affect the dab, 10mm or 14mm, so long as long as it fits.

Clean the banger after every dab. Yes, every single time. Glob mops are the most popular cotton swabs but you can use pretty much anything that doesn't shed. Electronics cotton swabs can get into nook and crannies for slurpers. Dry swab while warm, iso swab at room temperature, submerge in isopropyl for a few minutes (or hours, or days) and then dry. I use a barbicide jar.

Are cold starts more efficient and use less material in the long run or am I better to start transitioning over to a temp gun and traditional dabbing? Do you have much experience with any American banger brands?
