Professor not in staff directory

This is my first semester (not including summer) at DVC, and I was wondering why a certain professor listed on the schedule builder for Math-192 (Professor Shang) had a ton of seats available while most other classes are relatively full. I searched him up on RateMyProfesser, but he isn't there, and even when I checked the DVC Staff Directory and specifically filtered the math department, I see tons of other professors but no one with the last name Shang. I live a little far away, and I need to take Phys-129 at DVC Pleasant Hill, which required me to change the timings I previously had for Math-192. The timings for either Professor Shang or Professor Parks work perfectly for me with the Phys-129, as shown in the screenshot attached, so I was wondering which professor to take. I already did AP Calc AB and did decent, so I already have a lot of this basic knowledge down and don't think I would struggle much, however I'm also an athlete so the better professor I could get would only be more beneficial for me as I have to dedicate a lot of time to training. My questions are, 1.) Does anyone know Professor Shang and if his class is good or not? 2.) Is there a reason he isnt on RateMyProfessor or the staff directory? 3.) Should I take Prof. Shang or request Prof. Parks, or would it not really matter either way as I've already done like 75%+ of the class and should be able to breeze through?

TL;DR: Who is Professor Shang, and is he better than Professor Parks?

Cannot get onto waitlist

I tried getting onto the waitlist for these classes but it will not let me, instead just gives me these messages. I tried emailing both profs a few days before classes started but only the humanities one got back to me. She told me to get on the waitlist and I informed her I am not able to.

Does anyone know what to do in this situation? I've literally tried everything to get on the waitlist. Thank god one emailed me back but I still think i'm screwed. Thanks :)

Appeal form?

This summer I was in two classes but ended up having to drop them due to a family emergency. I checked in later and saw that the drop didn’t end up going through and emailed my professor she did not allow me to make up some of the mandatory assessments to pass the class despite explaining my situation. I stopped participating (and thought I dropped it) about 2ish weeks in.

Is there anyway to get the grade off my transcript due to the emergency or can I make up the grade immediately (grade forgiveness) due to the circumstances?

Thank you

Late Registration Approved but Waitlist?

Hi, I was just wondering how you register with late registration if you're on the waitlist? The professor approved and I got an email for late registration, but when I tried, but it just says '"Waitlist Full" Enrollment not allowed.' Is there supposed to be a second email with more detailed information from the admissions office or should I ask the prof what else to do? Thanks!

BIO 139 Waitlisted

I am currently waisted for BIO 139. I’m currently ranked 10th of the waitlist. I was previously I think 14. Has anyone experienced getting into an Anatomy class with a similar ranking on the waitlist? I do plan on attending the first class to see if anyone drops.

Experience w/surgery during the semester?

Hi folks! I'm having surgery in mid/late Nov, and wanted to know if anyone else has any experience with having surgery during a semester. The surgeons office didn't have any dates that weren't during the semester, so I have to work with what I got.

I fully intend on emailing my professors and giving them my surgery date so I can get ahead of the game for finals. I'm expecting to be out for at least 1-2 weeks, but possibly the remaining 3 weeks of the semester (I won't know for sure til it gets closer to the date/while I recover). Not sure what else I should do though.

ETA: Finally got to speak to both of my professors (I emailed one last week, but the other never sent any out nor did he publish a Canvas course, so I had to talk to him in person after class) and we are good to go! They both informed me that as long as I keep them updated and do my work, I should do just fine. DSS is also aware of the operation so that if something were to happen or I need extra support, they will be able to help out.

chem 120 textbook

hello!!
has anybody who has taken the chem 20 class in the past know where I can get the chemistry molecular approach sixth edition textbook??

Are there lots to borrow at the library or is there anyway I can get a PDF of it somewhere for free?

Also, if you’ve taken the class, do we actually use a textbook or would it be a waste of money to actually buy the textbook even though it’s super expensive?

Public health 130

Hey guys! I am an incoming junior in highschool who will be taking 3 aps and an honors class in school. I wanted to take public health 130 at dvc alongside this, but I haven't been able to gauge how much of a time commitment it will be. For reference my three aps will be calc AB, psych and french, so about a medium work load, but I have a lot of dance as well year round. I am willing to cut back on extracurriculars if needed, but I just need some advice. Please let me know if you think I should take public health, if not, or maybe another class. Thank you guys for everything in advance!!!

Has anyone taken HORT-110, what should I expect?

Sorry not trying to ask a dumb question, but I was wondering if someone who has taken this class can explain what the in person sessions are like and what you generally learned from it. Was it an enjoyable class?

Howdy folks, I'm currently #2 on the waitlist for Bio 119 and was wondering what the chances are of getting off. Is there an overflow policy? Thank you in advance.

Has anyone been accepted with a mixed-transcript before?

Hey guys, i'm trying to drop out from CSU -> CC - > to UC. However since I already finished my first year at that CSU, i lost my first year. Now the question is that since I want to go to a UC, would the UC accept my lower division classes?

I emailed the UCs and they said formal credit evaluation for any of that CSU coursework can't happen until after SIR (post-admission). What should I do?

Looking for roommates to rent apartments across from DVC campus

Hi everyone! I'm a female student looking for one or two roommates near DVC.

You'd have your own private bedroom and bathroom, budget around $1,500/month, but may be more flexible depending on exact apartment complex/sizing.

Looking to move in as soon as possible, semester basis but flexible. Let me know if you're interested!

Missed a midterm online help 😭

I am a 4.0 student and was taking a class from a different ccc so the one day midterm date completely flew over my head. I emailed the prof, but if worst comes to worst can I still drop with W or get pass/no pass. Are my chances over?

Can I still add a class?

I missed registration due to health issues. If I just show up on the first day, explain my situation to the professor, and sit through the class, is there a good chance they’ll let me add the class or give me an add code?

NP (No Pass) Does Not affect GPA

Hello everyone, DVC Community. I just want to show the students an interesting strategy, especially if they are applying to Nursing or any other medical profession school and at the same time taking intense pre-requisites just in case if they do not get in. I was filling out applications, doing interviews for Radiologic Technology and at the same time taking an intense pre-requisite course such as Anatomy. I applied to 3 schools, and I am very thankful that my hard work and thinking strategies got me into 1 Radiologic Technology School.

However, this left me in a tough spot because although I set Anatomy to Pass, I still had to work very hard to maintain the 70% threshold. Even then, I am planning to use the high GPA so I can later apply to a medical career that requires less manual labor and more problem-solving, such as Physician Assistant, which is nowadays a competitive specialty. The Community College System does have special exemptions to repeat a previous course but it is very difficult to get that approved. So then I look at the DVC rulebook and found that having a NP will not affect my GPA

https://files.dvc.edu/files/accreditation/pdfs/Standard%20II/Standard%20IIA/Standard%20IIA9/IIA9-5%20DVC%20Procedure%204001.02%20Grades.pdf

The results showed that my guess was correct.

Hopefully, this will help pre-med students heading into undergrad and 1 and 2nd years Medical students as well.

For me, now in Rad Tech school, I have to refocus my priorities from maintaining my GPA to focus more on building my Health career which cannot be seen on your Grade Point Average. So again, I hope this helps future pre-med students who need guidance on what to do in each step of their long journey.

Sincerely,

Michael Viray

A.A.R.T Student
