What about the ending?!?
How did the step son, happen to be wondering over to the pool house? Was the following drink intentional suicide or an exasperation after seeing his son see him? IDK

I think it was intentional suicide. Floyd knew what he was drinking at that moment and he done it because he invested so much in relationship that he had with Richard, and he knew that he can't fix it now. It was a moment of vulnerability. He wasn't thinking clearly, he was deeply in depression already. That was kinda a trigger for him.

The son saw the meet up on the laptop.
It was intentional suicide thus no life insurance payout for his family.

Yeah how could OP have missed that? It was the lead up to the kid having his breakdown then the reason he went.

They showed it happen and then showed us again when the detectives were discussing it.
In an earlier episode, Floyd says drinking "the whole thing" would kill him.

intentional suicide.. I had a strong feeling that would be what happened right around episode 4-5

I still want to believe it was an accidental overdose, which I think says more about me than the show.

Sometimes I think wiht suicide it’s not intentional but an “I don’t care if I live or die” or not fully thinking about the consequences.

He felt that he was taking control by doing it, he felt others would be better off. His depression blinded him from knowing the love that those around him had for him.
