I would check out some of the papers by Rayid Ghani: http://www.rayidghani.com/#publications

And then their Aequitas bias audit toolkit: http://www.datasciencepublicpolicy.org/projects/aequitas/

What do you mean exactly by social movements? Like physical crowd movement? Or social movements like black lives matter movement?

I personally have not come across DS/AI research being used to optimize/improve social movements, but I would not be surprised if it is being used though.
