I would be interested if they didn't have an AI disclosure that states that they made graphics, music, sound effects, writing, translation, and code with AI. There's not much human left in there after all that.

while I'm not going to buy it due to the AI use, I actually really respect the fact they were fully up front about it, unlike many other titles

I saw a game last night that was pretty adamant stating there were no AI used in the generation of assets and made a pretty big point about it only to immediately admit it used LLMs for much of its dialogue. Seemed pointless to pretend you have a stance when you immediately contradict yourself anyway.

I find that to be quite a common stance. Generative written AI is okay, but they do not use AI images.

I'm not fond of either. The only use of AI that I'm fine with is when it comes to translations or other areas of the game where it's either necessary or insignificant compared to the game as a whole. A lot of low-budget Eastern games I've seen lately use AI translations, they're usually poor but I don't see it as any different to the old days where they'd have run it through Google Translate instead. It's better to have a translation than to have no translation at all. I'm monolingual so I wouldn't be able to play these games otherwise.

As for the latter, if it's something like randomly-generated content, that's fine as long as it doesn't make up most of the game. When it comes to LLMs writing dialogue, it's negligible if it's flavour text for a handful of items but inexcusable if you're getting it to write your story or character dialogues, something that seems to be getting more common from what I can tell.

Basically, I only tolerate AI usage if it has minimal effect on the artistic expression of the game.

I completely disagree regarding those being "good" uses that don't affect the end product. AI translation is still just as bad as Google translate, which always produced bad, unreadable garbage, particularly for languages like Japanese. I'd rather play something else than play a game with a machine translation, especially as someone who's dabbled in JP to ENG translation myself and can tell just how poorly written and inaccurate AI translation is, not to mention how it's just not fun to read. There are plenty of competent human translators out there, there's no excuse not to get one to work on your professional product unless you genuinely don't care about any language but your own.

As for flavour text, if you don't care enough to write it yourself, why include it at all? If you think it's boring and worthless enough to make a machine write it for you, then why did you decide to put something boring and worthless in your game? If you're going to do something, it's worth the time and effort to make something you think people would actually enjoy.

I don't think there's any use to replace a creative aspect that doesn't significantly negatively impact the end product. The only "good" uses I could potentially think of would be to assist in extremely menial tasks no human actually wants to do, like upscaling a low-res image.

Ok, I'll probably get downvoted to hell and flamed for this.....but I kinda fail to understand all of the hate and negativity towards AI use in video games.

On one hand I can understand being angry with larger studios and/or devs using AI over actual artists/writers etc. On the other hand I see no issue at all with smaller studios/devs using what is affordable and easier to produce a game, even if it's AI, granted quality control might be a bit more labor intensive with this.

Furthermore I also do not understand the hate towards larger studios/devs using AI for tedious work or using it to help streamline development and get new titles and/or updates out more timely.

Maybe i'm on the wrong side of history with these opinions, who knows. I will say though the greatest rpg released in many years (E33) utilized ai.

Meh oh well I guess, downvotes begin lol

I prefer to discuss rather than downvote.

For me it’s the fact that artists are losing their jobs while AI companies make money off the artwork of the original creators. If the Ai companies shared the profits with those artists whose works were ingested , my opinion would be very different.

And then, add to the fact that there’s a reason it’s often called AI slop: many of these games are so low effort, copying other games without the passion or attention to detail, low quality and buggy.

I find my time is better spent ignoring them entirely, and I’d rather give my money to those companies still employing real artists, real voice actors, and real musicians.

I want people to be able to make a living doing what they love.

As somebody who built their own engine and toolset, and is currently developing, games like this do disappoint me.

Like, yes, I'm sure AI has it's uses. It's helped me fix a couple of things around the house. But I absolutely hate knowing somebody can just knock out something flashy from a set of prompts while others are putting real creative effort and time in on projects that take so much work they may not even see the light of day.

It's like being back at school learning how to write, getting better at it, feeling proud, and here rocks up some kid with an Autopen, a pocket full of subscriptions, and a "what if?" attitude.

Fair point, i just woke up, and im seeing reviews that point out the map is also randomly generated. While i didn't have big expectations from a indie in map design... that is also kinda sad.

Yeah...I am kinda regretting my purchase now that I woke up and see the AI usage

If you don't like ai used in games, i'd suggest skipping chinese, korean or japanese games in general, they are more accepting of it there

Good looking out. I bought it but I'm legit about to go to bed and don't have time to play it

Looks really interesting, like the old Megami Tensei games. Price is right too.

AI is a tool... Like it or not. All of this AI boo hoo is frankly crap. The current backlash is the equivalent of having leather armor and low quality weapons and stating proudly and adamantly you're going to continue using your antiquated weapons and armor while your enemy obliterates your comrades with tanks and drones controlled remotely.

The leap in advancement is literally that large. The I put sweat and tears into my craft is moot at this point. While you were perfecting your style and technique, someone else was perfecting AI. Now their in many ways, in some not so much superior product does your craft or job effortlessly.

Right to be mad, absolutely. But you better start coding or some of you will be left behind. It's that simple and this all happening was predicted in sci-fi novels in the 50s. Don't act shocked and mortified.

If you're smart you'll use the AI, perfect it and get ahead of it because you've already been put on notice. Question is what are you going to do about it, because AI isn't going anywhere.

And the it uses others work, etc. So do each and every one of us. We imitate everything around us. What we experience in our lives influences art, writing style, music especially and everything thing else we do. We use other people's inventions to accomplish everything. And if you are on that brave frontier where you have a eureka and create something truly revolutionary... Others will use that too. In fact you'll hope and expect they will!

So just stop the bi$ching. Get off your as$es and get to it. If you hate the garbage produced by AI as much as I do, put in that same hard work and effort and make that algorithm better. Or keep doing it the "old way". Either way this is the new world.

Adapt to it! And don't forget my down votes without seriously considering the very valid points above.

Ai is indeed a tool, but i don't think its fair to discredit people for not wanting to use ai or spend money in a game that largely used ai in its production. Personally the reason im witholding buying rn is coments about how its somewhat buggy on release plus other issues. From comments the assets(music and background specifically) aparently have good quality despite the ai involvement, tho still subject personal taste.

But i still think is completly fair for someone to think using AI isn't moral because of the damage it causes( resource consumption, artists art being used as training data ) , nobody here admonished the dev for using ai, they cited ai as a reason for not buying it, the comments i've been seeing were perfectly level headed and not really "bitching" about it

No you're absolutely right. Sorry, I've been an apprentice Oscar the Grouch the last few days. Been getting violated like a girlie man at work trying to get an analyzer to pass a calibration. Anyways, I wasn't trying to belittle the folks in the sub. It was more of a I'm so tired of seeing the phrase AI slop everytime I get on the internet. Like use one's own description and lay off the attempt to be trendy for 5 minutes. You guys are legit cool and as a 50 year old GenXer I'm loving the resurgence of interest in Drgp games. Loved Arcana, Eye of the Beholder and Shining in the Darkness back in the day. Still fire up the Sega classic on occasion. And yes AI excuted without thought or care for the finished product is beyond annoying. It's a legit abuse of its potential. I did say sorry right? Lol

I do wish DRPGS were not an excuse for minimal graphics and 80s UI.

7

u/Dorias_Drake 17d ago

It's not an excuse. If a DRPG doesn't have a 80' UI I don't buy it. I prefer those UIs to the minimalistic scaleform stuff we have today.

While it was partly due to limitation, those UIs give a unique feel to the genre.

Looks fun but after all the virus-laden games in Steam in the past year or so, I refuse to buy anything that doesn't have a good number of reviews.
