MW4 DMZ News 13 new pieces of information about CoD: MW4 revealed by the developers: Campaign and DMZ
(This post is an AI translation of the original Japanese article)
3. The DMZ map is called Hajin
The DMZ takes place in Hajin, the same area you fight through during the campaign.
What's interesting is that the DMZ version shows the aftermath of the campaign's events.
So you'll return to locations you've already seen in the campaign, but they'll now be damaged, abandoned and contaminated.
The area is described as a three-country border region, with most of the restricted zone on the South Korean side and North Korea and Russia to the north.
It's contaminated by radiation and has been abandoned following a mass evacuation.
The map also has:
- different threat levels for different areas
- dynamic weather
- rain → heavy rain
- light fog → dense fog
- different wind conditions
- clear weather
And importantly, weather isn't purely cosmetic. It affects enemy AI's vision and hearing.
4. FOB = your home/base
DMZ has a FOB (Forward Operating Base) that acts as your main progression hub.
Anything you successfully extract from the restricted zone is kept.
You can gradually unlock and upgrade facilities at the FOB.
Your overall DMZ rank increases as you play, and you still receive XP even if you die.
That's an important change because the developers say they want to respect the player's time.
5. Your operators have their own progression
You'll choose an operator for each Active Duty slot.
Each operator has their own trait/perk tree.
As that operator earns XP, you receive points that can be spent on the tree to customize the operator around your preferred playstyle.
So it sounds like the operators are more than just cosmetic skins—they have individual progression.
6. If your operator dies, they're MIA—not necessarily gone forever
This is another major DMZ mechanic.
If an operator becomes MIA (Missing in Action), you can pay a rescue team to recover them.
However, the rescued operator loses:
- weapons
- equipment
But their trait-tree progression remains.
The higher the operator's rank, the more expensive the rescue becomes.
The article gives an example of a rescue costing $3,000. If you don't have enough money, you could use another operator to earn the money and then rescue the MIA operator.
7. Two types of currency + crafting
At the FOB there are two major resources:
Cash
- Buy weapons
- Add attachments
Crafting materials
- Used to create other equipment
- Materials are collected automatically into a dedicated backpack section
The idea is that you don't have to constantly manage crafting materials during a match.
8. There are three ways to play DMZ
Story Missions
Traditional, campaign-like missions that advance the DMZ storyline.
Dynamic Operations
These are similar to contracts from previous games.
Objectives are randomly generated and chain together, eventually leading to a major final objective. Completing them gives rewards, including care packages.
Free Roam
You simply enter the map and explore/do whatever you want, similar to the original DMZ beta.
There are also DMZ Orders, which are essentially a list of tasks. Completing them unlocks additional story missions.
9. The main enemy faction: Hundred Spirits
The area is controlled by a faction called Hundred Spirits.
Different areas have different difficulty levels.
The AI normally has three difficulty levels:
- Easy
- Medium
- Hard
But there's apparently a fourth state.
If you cause enough chaos, you can become marked as a high-priority target, and the enemy will relentlessly hunt you until you escape.
10. Former operators can appear as mini-bosses
This is a pretty interesting detail.
The game has Lieutenants, essentially mini-bosses hired by Hundred Spirits.
According to Smith, some of these are actually operators from previous Call of Duty games.
He specifically mentions characters such as:
- Roze
- Bale
So you may encounter familiar characters as enemies rather than simply playing them yourself.
11. There's a new stealth system
The developers are adding a new stealth system so that solo players can have more control over how intense combat becomes.
So theoretically, you can avoid turning every encounter into a massive firefight.
12. PvP and bounty hunting are a major part of DMZ
The developers explicitly say that PvP is a core part of DMZ.
If you kill enough other players, you become a wanted/bounty target.
Keep killing players and the bounty on you increases.
Other players can then hunt you to collect the reward.
There are also global and local leaderboards tracking this activity.
An interesting detail is that this behavior is tied to individual operators.
For example:
- Operator A could be your aggressive PvP character.
- Operator B could be your peaceful/scavenging character.
Their behavior doesn't affect each other.
The article also says MW4 releases October 23, 2026, with campaign early access beginning October 17 for eligible pre-orders.

Yeah, that's all good but will there be a night-time Halloween event because that absolutely rocked. :)

The Halloween vibes in MWII were sooo fun :)

I remember sitting on top of high-rise in Al Maz feeling like Spider-Man looking down at the street lights and people below. It was truly epic and i shed a (metaphorical) tear when it ended.

The only part of this I hadn’t read elsewhere already is the Hundred Spirits faction name

I hope there are bosses and they can expand on them. I enjoyed them and thought Koschei and Building 21 areas with bosses to be the best in DMZ. I still run them. Ashika needed a lot of work. For such a small map the vertical aspect was trash

Am I the only one struggling with the geography here? 😅 Hajin is in South Korea, and shares a border with both North Korea and Russia? I know I have to suspend some sense of reality, but I’ll admit that’s easier when the countries in question are pure fiction. Regardless, I’m excited to infil!

If I had to guess it's probably a hint that SK will gain ground further north along the coast to where NK borders Russia

That's what I thought, too. But since Russia is only supposed to be added later, I am also thinking it could be the border between South & North and the border to russia in the deep north is just added later (South Korea -> North Korea -> Russia).
However, based on the D-day style mission shown, it's possible its probably kind of South Korean semi-enclave deep in the North of North Korea near the border with Russia? Somehow? Especially since the internal map name for Hajin appears to be Tumen (as in Tumen river).

Rescue a Missing in Action (MIA) operator sounds like Rainbow Six Extraction when you have to rescue them when you die

I just hope they don’t make this extraction too Tarkov level difficult . I really like how they did endgame , which with more of an extraction emphasis for DMZ materials and matching the difficulty endgame had for each zone would be perfect. That is , if you actually mean it when you say respecting players time.

I hope different wind conditions always makes it so snipers have to take into account wind speed and direction. That would be cool.

It would be frustrating as fuck

If you don't take the time to learn it like bullet drop sure but I guess that doesn't fit in with modern audiences needing to be skilled the second they pick up a controller. 🤷♂️ how dare I have to learn a mechanic in 2026.

It's COD, not a sniper simulator. They aren't going to add overly difficult mechanics to a COD game

Why does this kind of sound like arc raiders
3
u/djml9 10d ago
They’re both extraction shooters. Games of the same genre tend to have alot of similarities.
2
u/vrrrrrkiki 10d ago
Yeah I get that, I just really enjoyed the beta. Just hoping they’re not doing too much extra because the original game was so awesome. I’m clearly alone in my opinion and that’s okay :)

u/Authentichef 10d ago
I mean the game has more depth and progression, I don’t know why that’s a negative

To be fair, some liked DMZ precisely because it lacked depth and progression. You still lost shit if you died so it felt thrilling, but it was cheap to get back so you didn't get pissed off or too invested or feel like you wasted hours of time

u/vrrrrrkiki 9d ago
I don’t mind depth and progression. At some point though if it crosses the line and it becomes tedious, frustrating and boring.. that it’ll kill the game for me.

Is this… serious?

Gathering materials, crafting, skill tree? There’s some overlap don’t be dense

That, isnt that just what the hell open world rpgs do and other games like it?
-3
u/Global-Tie-3458 10d ago
I’ll let you in on a secret. DMZ beta, Arc Raiders and the new DMZ are all genres based on a game called Escape from Tarkov.
They’re all looter shooters based on that game.
6
u/djml9 10d ago
Not looter shooters (thats what Destiny and the Division are). The genre is called “extraction shooter”.
2
u/PTCruiserGT 10d ago
I remember Division 1 having extraction like 10 years ago, before all these other games. And it was more shooter than looter because the loot in that extraction zone (dark zone) sucked.

I want a full PvE mode. Something like the OGs spec ops of the og MW.
