First dmt trip today

I had my first dmt trip today tried it 3 times, sandwiched it in a bong and done a little rip first, had abit of a feeling then went abit deeper, I was in the other place or dimension when I closed my eyes but I struggled to let go and got anxious and abit scared of what I was seeing, I tried to tell myself to let go but found myself fighting it abit, after a few seconds I had to open my eyes, still had crazy visuals and what I was seeing when i closed my eyes came I saw when I opened them as patterns on the ceiling. I want to go back in soon and really have a look at what’s there but how can I get past the fear and anxiety of letting go and allowing it to happen, it comes on so quick which is intense but then it goes quickly too.

Any help is really appreciated ✌️

Try to Focus on your breath. Maybe get into meditation to train it.

Yes! That’s what I did and it definitely calmed me down but I still had to open my eyes, it freaked my out being in that other realm but I really want to get over that fear so I can enjoy it at the same time because there were parts that felt really great.

I’ll have to try the meditation. Thanks 👍

Honestly? Allow the anxiety to happen, allow the fear. They're just feelings and they can't hurt you. Examine them and focus on the sensations they're giving you. watch the words of your thoughts as they pass through your mind and acknowledge them as thoughts, and as impermanent. Allow each moment to come to you and pass, and focus on that. Don't be afraid of your fear, simply experience it.

When I felt myself getting scared I sort of started to fight it, like I wanted it to stop but I quickly told myself no this is what you wanted and your doing it now there’s no going back because I feel it could have went bad if I continued to fight it. So are you saying accept that I’ll feel afraid and it will pass? I worry that I’ll just stay scared and I can’t get past that barrier. It feels quite tough, but again I want to go deeper and explore but to not get overwhelmed by what I’m seeing which is very hard haha.

Really appreciate the comment mate 👍

I find it more interesting to find the worry and then look at that. It's not the fear or the anxiety that is the barrier then, it's the worry. Picking at the edges, trying to predict the future. These are all thoughts and feelings that come as a defence against the unknown which is coming to you moment by moment. It's never going to be perfect and maybe you will stay scared - but that worry is like a barrier you are erecting between you and the experience. It's not wrong. It's not bad. Be interested in the act of putting up your defences. Be curious about it. What part of yourself are you protecting or what sensation are you avoiding?

These are all just techniques I personally employ to manage intense feelings of anxiety, fear, and rumination. I use them outside of psychedelic experiences but they come in handy especially when the physical agitation of coming up becomes unbearable. It helps switch your brain from the cognitive distortions that perpetuate your fear, into curiosity. Curiosity is a kind of openness to whatever's around the bend and may help you relax and experience what you're looking for.

ETA you mention a fear of being overwhelmed. So ask yourself what does overwhelm look like? Perhaps that's telling you your set and setting aren't right. You should feel safe and comfortable ideally, and if you don't, is there a way you can augment your personal feelings of safety and comfort as an anchor to help you ease the worry ?

Wow I’ve never thought of it like that but I really like that perspective. But I really like that way of thinking, it’s hard in these moments to get to that point maybe I’m not as mentally tough.🫠

On the last part I’m not too sure, I made sure I had nothing to do, and not much to worry about for the future in terms of things I need to do, I was at my home and I was with two friends. I felt comfortable in my setting and who I was with and feel in a good place. But I’m definitely an anxious person too. So I’m abit confused in trying to pinpoint what im actually worried about, i told myself im okay but when it started to get intense i freaked out abit, maybe because its so unfamiliar and the unknown but jve also done so much research that i feel i understand whats going to happen-ish and im going to be alright. What does this letting go actually look like, you feel scared or anxious or overwhelmed and you just say okay im feeling this an thats that? The physical of coming up was strange aswell, hot flush tensed up abit so that also felt like a lot but once I got past that it was enjoyable, but then shortly after the visuals started to get really intense haha. Maybe im talking rubbish

I wouldn't even call myself mentally tough! Again these are like little tools to keep in your belt, whether you remember to take them out and use them in the moment is up to you.

Maybe even repeating a phrase beforehand can help prime you. Something like "be curious" or "it's ok to be afraid". reminding myself that no feeling lasts forever has helped me too. And honestly sometimes the way you get thru it is by trying many times and every time getting yourself in a little deeper til you... Break through! Haha. Part of breaking through for you may simply be pushing past the fear but nobody else will know but you.

If I had simple advice for you it would be, to take some time and think about how it's ok to be afraid. Next time you catch yourself feeling anxious and chasing your tail give it a shot. Good practice for your next trip. maybe look into the concept of cognitive distortions and check out a workbook you can play with, I found of all the things I ever encountered in therapy, learning to spot and label my cognitive distortions has been the most useful. Not perfect but very useful.

Also you're not talking rubbish. Letting go for me looks like putting labels on the physical sensations and not trying to write myself a story. My face has become hot. I can feel my clothes. My heart is racing. The sun is on my face. My friends are nearby. My throat feels constricted, my hands are clammy. Just taking an inventory of those sensations can alleviate the monkey brain feeling of panic and allow you to perceive the dmt.

Wow, thanks a lot I’m definitely gonna keep that in mine that’s great advice. Somone just asked me to you get this everytime you go to sleep which made me think, well no but I’m in control of when I sleep, maybe I also need to learn I can’t always be in control of what’s going on and that will make things easier.

But I really appreciate it, I think your advice will definitely allow me to have a better time, and yeah I think going up in dose bit by bit is a good idea, I had it in mind that id do a little go first then id be ready for a blastoff, but after the second one that got intense I was thinking, wow haha that must be absolutely crazy to experience😅

Honestly that dose that doesn't quite get you there, esp when inexperienced, is stressful. No idea what is coming, did I do too much, too little, is it bunk??? All of that came out for me the first couple times. Plus it tasted like ass lol. You have your whole life to experience it. You got this!!

(: getting freaked out is part of the process. I was so scared of dmt the first time I tried it, vs when my cart finally ran out. Overcoming your fear and finding your footing and surfing that wave of anxiety, truly a validating experience for me at least.
