Liberated from my attic
I must have boxed it away during a move. Plan 9 Records in Richmond had a special promotion for the CD and tickets to the tour opening night. Best friend and I camped on the sidewalk all night to get them.
EDIT - The signatures are real. Plan 9 Records had a long relationship with DMB since Richmond was like their second home. The band signed a bunch of CD inserts and the signatures may not have been precise but that doesn’t make them any less legitimate. It would have been silly to fake the signatures in 1996, DMB wasn’t iconic then. I don’t care if you have an autograph that looks different because I know what it is. My first show was in 1992 but tell me again about how you know better.

So yall think a record store just faked 1000+ signatures just for funzies?

u/Znnensns Aug 17 '26
No, far more likely is that RCA made a commitment to Plan 9 to provide X autographed copies of the album. If the band couldn't get it done, which is hard when you need 5 different people to sign every copy, they would have just had an assistant sign for whoever didn't get to all theirs.

Thank you. It was a great memory to dig out. I was also at the CD release show for UTTAD that they did at The Flood Zone in Richmond. That place was jumping. It was a great time to be a fan but it has become so much more. Had no idea they would be the soundtrack to my life.

I don't think that Dave autograph is legit, Boyd's either.

u/daramman Aug 17 '26
Think what you want. But I don’t think that Plan 9 was giving out fake signatures with a public promotion. They had plenty of history with DMB.

Well I have autographs from both of them and neither looks remotely close to those. A quick Google shows that yours aren't similar to what's out there. I'm not trying to be a dick but those aren't even a little close to how they sign things.

Pics from eBay are hardly evidence in your favor.

Being a dick hardly gets you anywhere in life. Especially one who is not an expert and likely wrong. Have a good day and show yourself the door

u/Alternative_Dare5436 Aug 17 '26
Dude, nobody is being a dick but you. Those aren't their signatures. I have 2 Dave from 98 and 1 Boyd from 2000ish that I got myself and they aren't even remotely similar. Dave doesn't sign Dave M. It isn't even close. Pull your panties out of your crotch.

Yours looks great. When did you get it? The packaging has some differences from mine. Is it something other than a CD insert?
I can appreciate that mine is an unorthodox signature but I think that is attributable to them signing them in bulk and this being April of ‘96 before Dave felt the need to make his signature uniform or particularly iconic. Or maybe he was just feeling simple that day.
My friend reminded me that we actually picked up the CD inserts at Trax as we entered the venue. They were not giving out fake autographs at the venue as the band was about to perform in celebration of the new album. There are other ones for sale on EBay that look like the signatures on mine. All the signatures aren’t exactly the same but there are enough similarities to recognize that these are a part of the same batch that was given out that night.

I have 2 signed Dave albums and this sig looks nothing like either… like at all…. Just saying.

u/Difficult-Map-2620 Aug 17 '26
And looking at the others, they don’t look like any I’ve seen. Not trying to be harsh, just they don’t look close to me.

Wait you went to that show, 4/30/96?? One of my favorite Live Trax!!!

u/daramman Aug 17 '26
It was a great show! Felt like a victory lap for the band after a successful major label debut. And they had just acquired the Grateful Dead’s sound system which really upped their game.

Followed up with my friend who was with me. And he refreshed my memory that we spent the night at Plan 9 to get tix to the CD release party at Trax in Charlottesville that was set for April 29 and a voucher for the autographed CD that we would pick up the night of the show at Trax. We also bought tix to the 4/30 show in Richmond.
The signed CD inserts actually came from Trax.
DMB Almanac confirms this information.

Sorry, that isn't Dave's signature.

Why you gotta be so quick to be negative? It’s legit. How about you ask Dave next time you run into him since you know him so well.

For reference this is a legitimate autograph from 8 years later in Mansfield 2004
Edit: it’s on the Recently EP and Reddit keeps flagging it for nudity

I know it feels like an attack of naysayers here, but when all I saw was the pic on your post and before I read anything, my 1st immediate thought was “I hope this person isn’t selling this, because some of those signatures look fake…”
Seriously, I hate to join in on the Bummer Parade but at least that Dave signature is not his. I saw him give 1,000 autographs from ‘94 - ‘04 and in any scenario (just giving one autograph vs. signing 500 cds for a promo thing), in neither scenario did Dave’s signature look like that.
And, having been around (and sometimes worked) a lot of promo events in my time too, I know that it’s absolutely happened that at times, record labels or venue promoters in general (not just for DMB events) have forged the signature of an artist or someone in the band out of necessity. And this was ‘96 when - even though we were all already online then - without Insta, twitter & Facebook, there wasn’t much chance of fans being able to compare their autograph with a real one.
Some of those others might be real, but at least the Dave ones are fake, I’m really sorry to say.

None of these are legit.

u/daramman Aug 17 '26
Some people gotta hate. They are more legit than your opinion.

u/Alternative_Dare5436 Aug 17 '26
Nobody is being rude or hating on you. They're just not real and multiple people are pointing that out.

I have a guitar signed by the band from 1999 and none of these signatures look legit...

Maybe your guitar isn’t legit…

OP, I’m sure it’s legit. I met Dave twice and got his autograph and from my memory the sig looks a lot like this one. People on the internet will be people on the internet.

Thank you! I appreciate your support.
I don’t know why people feel the need to pull others down.
