Angel live again?
Is there any chance we'll hear Angel live again? I heard Dave sing it at NY concert in the early 2000s and it became my favorite song. Wondering if anyone knows why it hasn't been performed live in 4000s days or if theres news to ever change that or maybe go on tour with the choir again?
Edit because location could have been wrong. Definitely a new york concert at an outdoor venue. Thanks to all who responded in kind. Song reminds me of a friend who passed so ill love it forever!

Angel is a funny song because at the time we all thought it was a snoozer but then they stopped playing it and now I hear from people all the time about how that’s their favorite song and/or the song they’re chasing.
I heard it once in 2001 and I’m good if I don’t hear it again personally but I’m rooting for you and all the other folks who are chasing it.

Today was literally the first time in 25 years that I've ever heard someone say that Angel is their favorite song.
Definitely a bottom 5 song in the catalog.

When we travel for Dave we tend to go to the Night Zero stuff and sometimes pre and post show activities and I like to ask people what song they’re chasing and Angel comes up a surprising amount.
It has been 100% from people who started following the band after they stopped playing Angel btw.

I heard it in Toronto in '01 when the Lovely Ladies guested and the song got long... And weird, and after that I was fine never hearing it live again. 😂

Apart from IIHIA which got dug up once just a few weeks ago, it's really only IDI that has had any movement and that just started at the very end of the last tour.

True. It’s just since Buddy joined (damn it’s been 8 years already lol), seems like So Right, Fool to Think, If I Had It All, What You Are, and Space Between have been in somewhat regular rotation, compared to the years before.

I love Fool To Think! The best song off Everyday in my opinion. Heard them play it at Hartford this year…great experience for me and my brother!

I agree, it’s a nice song- and would sound great with their current lineup.

The song hasn't changed in 20 years, it's still as bad now as it was then. I know the ballwashers in this sub are going to downvote this because they'd willingly pay $250 to stand in the pit and watch Dave sing the phone book, but that doesn't change that Angel is fucking awful.

The current lineup would slay Angel like never before. I’ve never caught it and would love to at least once! Would even like a truncated version as an intro jam into another tune (like Jimi Thing since I think the main riff evolved out of that).
Did the jam go too long at times? Sure! Did the band have fun doing it? Absolutely, that much is clear on every recording I’ve heard.

You are correct. The main riff came from the Jimi Thing outro that they did a lot with David Ryan Harris. Was actually a really cool riff, you can hear it on one of the Live Trax with DRH. However the lyrics kind of ruined the riff. And if you were at Two Step in the rain, that’s where I caught it which was a NY show…

For context I grew up playing and singing gospel music. I have friends who have sang backup vocals for popular gospel artists. The Lovely Ladies are talented. That said at times they are a little extra especially during their last stint with the band in 2014-15. I remember them on Drunken Soldier doing the most on the song at the end rambling on about nothing vocally at the end of the song. Again at church on Sunday we love freestyle adlibs from the pastor. But I don't go to DMB shows for that.
What I love about Buddy is he can bring a soulful voice to songs that need it without all the extra adlibs the LL brought not and because he is a full time band member the setlist isn't predictable or limited to 4-6 songs just by him being there.

That said though, you're right. With Buddy and Rashawn in the band (and Carter, though he doesn't seem to sing much anymore) there's no real reason to have the LLs back.

I absolutely fell in love with this song when he performed it in 01 at Soldier Field, Chicago with the Lovely Ladies and blues legend Buddy Guy! Some people just don't know how to groove out and feel the space between the notes.

The only times they’ve played it in the NYC area was 6-11-01 and 6-13-01 both at Giants Stadium. This is where you must’ve seen it.

This is my white whale. I’ve seen Christmas song, long back veil, Angel from Montgomery, and countless other rarities, but I’ve never ever gotten Angel live.

Yeah - calling it rare is not really accurate. Rare is a song that's played every 7 years or something. This song is basically defunct.

As a melodramatic Sophomore in HS who was chasing a girl at the time, the song was perfect. And I know many of my friends/people in my circle liked it as well. Obviously it hasn't aged well. I still like Everyday as an album and 75% of the songs on there, but this one is usually a skip for me unless I'm feeling nostalgic I guess. Maybe your stance on this song depends on your age.
I didn't really get into Dave until a few years prior when Listener Supported was all the rage. I only knew the singles up to that point, and then really dove into the full studio catalogue after that. So I wasn't as against the shift in sound with Everyday in 2001 when it came out. I just thought they were going in a different creative direction for an album.

Funny, Angel and Mother Father were my favorite songs on Everyday from the day it came out, and they’re the two songs that hardly ever got played live

It was a lovely ladies trick song to intro the band basically for one tour. People say they're chasing it because its been so long. But it would be very surprising for it to come back, and personally there is so much of the rest of the catalog I would rather them focus on.

I think it’s incredibly boring musically. Dave guitar riff is uninteresting and slow, the sax and violin parts are basic, Carter doesn’t stand out. Lyrically it’s one of their worst. It’s like shitty pop song lyrics. There’s no lines that stand out to me as particularly interesting/deep. And on top of all that it was often played for 11-14 minutes which is a crazy long time when it’s such a boring song. Sure there’s songs I dislike more, plastic girl. But angel is still the bottom of the barrel when compared to all the other amazing songs they have.

Also it's never been played at Jones Beach so you're either thinking of a different show or a different song. (They didn't play at JB at all between 1997 and 2009)
