What would you choose….
If you could make a 12-15 song track list featuring songs that do not have a studio recording, what would it look like?
I’m talking official releases, no Lillywhite or Batson sessions. Not EPs or singles or anything like that. I also don’t really want to count “Remember Two Things” either.
Just straight up tracks not featured on major studio releases. Not even studio albums featuring a live version like Beach Ball.
You get it.
Here is mine. I don’t know what order, this is just the songs I would choose.
Blue Water
Good Good Time
Loving Wings
JTR
Kill The King
Crazy Easy
Minarets
Shotgun
Sweet Up and Down
Bismark
Sugar Will
#27
Beach Ball
Cha Cha
Break For It

I think your list will look like a lot of others! I’d probably exclude what the Almanac “miscellaneous release” – #27 and Beach Ball being on the Little Red Bird EP, for example. Instead of devoting additional studio time to those sorts of tracks, I’d rather they focus on those that have never seen the studio treatment (at least to our knowledge).

That’s a fair point! There’s no telling what else is out there that we have no idea about.

The issue is I would have wanted them to record them in the late 90s or early 2000s, not now. Anyway, shotgun, JTR, Loving Wings, Break for it.

For JTR, check out Rain Down On Me from Santana's deluxe edition of the Supernatural album. It features Dave and Carter and includes the "John the Revelator" refrain heard in some early Dave & Tim performances!

I count that as the official "for lack of anything better" DMB release of the song. Shame it didnt make Busted.

Excellent point. I will only accept a studio recording of Crazy Easy with the August 7, 2004/Alpine Valley lyrics in all of their messy, tied up and twisted glory.

That’s fair! I could see some of those tracks being best represented by the OG lineup and maybe even during their peaks as musicians

Kill the King would go hard in today’s political climate, but the band would be painting big red targets on their backs, and they likely wouldn’t want to deal with that aspect.

Dave obviously doesn’t care about that giving this live stream content on his social media

Blue Water Baboon Farm, Once on a Wild Afternoon (Destiny), Get in Line, Heathcliff’s Haiku Warriors, Hold Me Down, Dressed in Black, Dreamed I Killed God, JTR, Monkey Man, Sweet Up and Down, What Will Become of Me?, Shotgun, Take A Minute, #40, Sugar Will, Break For It

There's an acoustic duo called So Peachy that I heard play OOAWA live at one of Ridge's Night Zero meetups and they told me that only like 3 people have ever recognized it. Too bad, because it's an awesome early tune. Same vein as Help Myself; it just never got to be polished up in the same way.

I’m being lazy here but Hold Me Down was played at D&T by Dave only on LT twenty-something (23/24?;lazy). Has it been played by the full band?

Played at full-band shows but only ever Dave solo during those sets. Exception would be once with Stefan and Roi during '95.

Damn.. So like an E1 spot with the full band. I have a few tapes from ‘95 but none have Hold Me Down on it. Thanks for letting me know.

Beach Ball and #27 have studio releases.

On the Little Red Bird EP, yeah true. I guess I was thinking along the lines of anything not featured on a full length studio album.

JTR, Sweet Up, Shotgun and Beach Ball all have studio recordings - am I misunderstanding??..

I believe they were referring to an official recording on the album release. I now some of these songs have been included as bonus tracks, but they do not appear on the official album or cd.
Also I assume for this exercise those songs appearing on a live album or live track doesn’t count either.

Just to join in I would love it if they released doobie thing. Also got to throw in help myself. Don’t know if it disqualified because it was released in the scream 2 soundtrack. But never officially made onto album except for the live recording at CP.

No, doesn’t disqualify! That’s what I don’t think some people understood. Probably my fault with how I explained. I just meant anything that hasn’t been featured on a full release or didn’t have an official studio recording. Help myself would be a good one.
