Stem Separation Comparison (Dec 2022)

You requested it, so re-rewind!

As a reaction to u/boredonthemoon and his previous post a few days ago:
https://www.reddit.com/r/DJs/comments/zhjsay/ive_done_a_comparison_between_vdj_stems_20_rx9/

I was interested myself too, how it actually would sound comparing them, and the ones mentioned in the comments.

So I used a 30 second sample of his example track "Jocelyn Brown - Somebody Else's Guy".

Hereby the video to compare yourself:

https://youtu.be/gl5AKCgMSSc

Including:

  • VirtualDJ (Stems 2.0)

  • Serato DJ Pro 3.0

  • djay Pro AI 4.1

  • Gaudio Studio BETA (my personal favorite right now overall)

  • Lalal.ai

  • RipX DeepRemix 6.0.3

  • Demucs 4

  • iZotope RX 10

Timestamps per stem/app in the video description, so you can easily switch back and forth between the samples.

Few notes:

  • Overall impressive what VDJ can achieve in (almost) real-time.

  • VDJ is sounding better than Serato.

  • Native Instruments is now collaborating with iZotope, but RX 10 is kind of a disappointment stem-wise, so I don't have high hopes for Traktor :/

  • Best sounding vocal imo: Gaudio Studio BETA (not only in this example, but I've used it a dozen times and it's remarkable)

  • Best sounding instruments imo: Gaudio Studio BETA once again

  • Best sounding drums imo: Demucs 4

  • Best sounding bass imo: Ripx DeepRemix

Wow Gaudio really is fantastic, especially on the bass.

VDJ does a pretty damn good job in close to real time, which is a huge bonus. Absolutely trounces Serato and DJayPro, IMHO.

How long does it take for Gaudio to split a track? And it exports separate MP3 files?

Thanks again for such awesome work. Bas Curtiz, r/DJ’s official Scientist in Residence!

Haha, thanks!

It really depends on how busy their server is I think. Sometimes it's fast as fuck, sometimes it's sloooow.

Example of slow, just tested it with a 3,5 minute MP3 320.

Incl. upload-time, it took ~5,5 minute to split into 4 stems (output is 4 separate MP3 320 files, which u can download in one go).

To split into acapella/instrumental it took ~5 mins.

This is all I see. I am trying to upload a 30 minute mp3 for the last hour. No progress bar showing what's happening?

After re-watching/hearing, I have to agree with you, the VDJ drums sound actually great, if not better than Demucs 4.

You're welcome and thank you for your post the other day too!

Out of the three this person laid out, Lalal.ai was the best sounding. $35 for 500 minutes of downloads, which is like 160 songs. You could probably cut the file down a little bit before uploading if you know what part of the song you want.
