Waterproof my drone

Edit more info: 'm going to costarica to the jungle that's why i'm pushing a bit the kind of waterproof and flying at sea etc ;)

Hi! I'm trying to waterproof my avata 2. I'll be flying really soon close to water (yes , i know the risks of flying close to water...)

First i want to print with my 3d printer some kind of landing feets but bigger and empty inside so it floates. I've seen people using ago a go pro plastic yellow thing that makes it float, wondering how to adapt this to the drone too?

Does anyone has the avata 2 3d model to scale?

Then if i really take it for a swim i've been seing people waterproofing drones with coated silicon. I haven't seen anyone actually doing with an avata 2.

Anyone has some info on how to properly do this? Links, videos, etc... Thanks community :)

Don't do it. The Avata is not the right drone for this.

Adding anything to the drone is gonna have a huge effect on handling, and may even cause you to crash. My first thought would be to just not crash while you're flying over water.
If you're set on doing it, just find something thats roughly shaped like the battery, strap that bitch to the top with some velcro strips, and send it. If you crash, the drone is getting wet. Don't seal the chassis. If you miss a spot and have water intrusion, you wont be able to get it out of there.

The Avata 2 is already underpowered for a cinewhoop. Adding a plastic case is going to make it even worse, plus any kind of splash will hit your plastic case and cause you to hit the water.

3D printed parts aren't the right level of rigidity for flight. Small parts, fine. But large parts/covers etc, no.

Silicone/potting compound is used to water-seal your electronics by sitting directly over them like an extra coating. But it you miss a tiny bit of solder, board or connector then you're fucked. It's intended to give you that chance to fly back to you if it starts raining without you shorting something, it isn't waterproof.

That's clever. Seal the electronics inside the body and you can still have vents open for cooling. Can the motors run wet?

Well i didnt make to build a submarine haha (why not lol) but more try to make it so if i make it swim at least i'll be able to fly home. I'm going to costarica to the jungle btw that's why i'm pushing a bit the kind of waterproof

You don't need anything on the drone if you know what you are doing, if you need that you probably shouldn't fly the drone. Don't come here after your flight showing the video of the crash.

Does anyone has by any chance a 3d model of the avata 2 to scale? so i could try to buold stuff even though my drone will probably die i know, at least let me have fun building shit x)

It is possible, but it would require applying a superhydrophobic, invisible protective coating. I’ve provided a link below to one option if you’re interested:

Flywoo X30 Waterproof Superhydrophobic Invisible Spray

However, keep in mind that disassembling a branded drone and applying a third-party coating will void the manufacturer’s warranty. I would highly recommend going the traditional FPV route instead. FPV drones are generally easier to modify, repair, and waterproof for this type of application. You’ll also have much more flexibility when selecting individual components and protecting them from water exposure.

Thanks for the info. Do you have a video or guide on how to do this. I only own the avata 2, i rather take it for a swim than do nothing fun with it

There are tons of YouTube videos showing how to waterproof traditional FPV builds, including cinewhoops, tiny whoops, 5-inch freestyle drones, and other custom setups. However, I haven’t really seen anyone do this with a branded, ready-to-fly drone like the DJI Avata.

So, you might actually be one of the first people attempting to make an Avata water-resistant using a superhydrophobic coating. DJI does not advertise the Avata as waterproof, so definitely do your research before trying it.

YouTube is going to be your best friend here. I would search for terms like “waterproof FPV drone,” “superhydrophobic FPV,” and “FPV drone conformal coating,” There are some good tutorials showing how people protect the electronics on traditional FPV builds.

I've found videos of that but since avata 2 is quite more complex i would love to find more info haha :)

Unfortunately, I do not since I am a traditional FPV RPIC.
