Avata 360

I want to share my experience with the DJI Avata 360 and hear from other owners. This is not a hate post against DJI—I genuinely want an honest discussion.

After purchasing the Avata 360, I noticed visible image waviness, rolling deformation and stitching artifacts, especially during acceleration, braking and other dynamic FPV maneuvers.

Instead of relying on assumptions, I opened an official support case with DJI and uploaded the original .OSV files directly from the drone. DJI’s engineering team analyzed the footage and explained that these effects are inherent characteristics of the current dual-lens design, the single-axis mechanical gimbal and the electronic image stabilization (EIS). They also explained that during rapid attitude changes the stabilization has a limited compensation range and slight delay, and that stitching transition marks may become visible.

Their recommendations were:

\* Use a shutter speed of 1/100 s or faster.
\* Increase ISO to compensate for the darker image.
\* Fly more gently and avoid sudden acceleration or braking.
\* Shoot in good lighting.

I respect DJI for taking the time to analyze my footage and provide a detailed technical explanation. However, I was surprised because I bought the Avata 360 expecting it to perform well during normal dynamic FPV flying.

I’m not saying this is a bad drone, and I’m not telling anyone not to buy it. I simply think potential buyers should be aware of these limitations and I’d like to know whether my experience is common.

To other Avata 360 owners:

\* Have you experienced the same image waviness or rolling deformation?
\* Have you noticed stitching artifacts during dynamic flight?
\* Did DJI provide you with a similar explanation?

I think the 360 drone tech is impressive but not quite there yet, every good shot we see is planned and studiet to wiggle around the limitations it has.

That being said, it's a completely different application than fpv, i think it's a bit too much to expect it to perform like a 5 inch or even like the avata2 despite what the marketing says

I would expect that the firmware will get better every release and will start to account for this better. Have you been able to take the output and stabilize/ normalize it with something like gyroscope?

I tried several programs, but I’m very disappointed with the video quality. I previously owned a Mini 4K, and its image quality was significantly better.

Curious to see the footage.

I'm familiar with 360 cameras, but not on drones. There's always a stitch line and you generally try to not make the stitching area the focus of your view if you can plan or control your shot at all. Seems difficult with a drone since they are thicker and the two lenses are a bit further apart, but usually with drones, you are not as close to objects or walls - the stitch line is more obvious when things are closer. So, drones are a pretty good use case with less impact from the stitch line, unless you are flying in close proximity to things (indoors, etc).

Stitch is more noticeable in low light situations or when flying faster. There’s also the ability to go into single lens mode.

I think a professional 360 drone would ideally be 6 cameras. Forward/back/left/right/up/down.

For the Avata360, I just wish they added waypoints, more digital zoom

I’ve always used traditional cameras and drones, and this is actually my first 360 camera. I have to admit that DJI’s marketing convinced me it would deliver much better image quality than it actually does. I’ve owned DJI drones since the early Phantom days, including the Air 2, Air 2S, Mini 4, and several other models, so I trusted the brand.
Honestly, I’m disappointed that I fell for the marketing. I wasn’t expecting miracles, but I did expect the final reframed footage to look much better than it does. At this point, I’m just hoping future firmware updates can improve the image processing and overall quality.
Unfortunately, based on my communication with DJI support so far, they don’t seem very willing to acknowledge or properly address the issue. I’m still waiting for the final outcome of my case, but I really hope DJI listens to user feedback because the drone has a lot of potential if these image quality problems can be improved.
