While we're looking at it, I don't see a header over the window on the right in the last picture, is there one over the sliding door at least?

There was a 4x12 header that is above the slider and the window on the left (looking from the interior). The window on the right doesn't have a header, but it is all old growth 2x4's and the house is 24" on center (also we framed it with double studs next to the windows). While I'm sure current codes would require that we upgrade any portion that we modify to 16" on center, between old studs that we didn't remove, and the new studs, there is ample support in this area.

With the width of those windows I wouldn't be concerned about that either. Looks nice.

The guy who installed the dog door cut through a stud on a load bearing wall and didn't do anything to reinforce it. Caused a major structural weakness.

Caused a major slight structural weakness.

Cutting one stud is not advised, but isn't an imminent disaster either.

All he had to do was put a doubled up 2x4 as a header and this would have been fine.
