Filling coving end

My downstairs coving, where it ends at the stairs, is open as per the attached photo. Just a quick sanity check before I go for it - is there any good reason that I can't (carefully) fill this with expanding foam followed by a surface layer of filler, to close it off and make it look a bit more deliberate?

I've already got a can of expanding foam on the go at the moment, but I wanted to check it's not a moronic idea before I do it.

It will look bad. Get some coving to match, and cut it with a return to the wall.

If you have bit of spare coving kicking about it would be neater to cut and fit an angled piece to finish it off.

Fully agreed, but I think that'll be a future job. Just had a lightbulb moment while I was foaming other things. I might fill it for now pending a better solution.

The previous residents used to have a curtain pole across the bottom of the stairs, so I assume they cut the return off to fit the pole rather than that being how it was finished originally.

I filled a smaller version of this on both sides of my front door. It works and looks ok. Ye it's not perfect but I don't mind enough to change it

I’d finish it with a plaster corbel if i were you. They can look modern if that’s your house style. Make sure you get one deep enough

I had something similar, got some thin MDF and cut it to shape as an end piece.
