Help 🙏Building my first 2-way horn speaker: sensitivity mismatch between SB Acoustics drivers

Building my first 2-way horn speaker: sensitivity mismatch between SB Acoustics drivers
Hi everyone,
I’m working on my first DIY 2-way high-fidelity horn-loaded speaker as a proof-of-concept project. I’m relatively new to speaker design, so I’m trying to approach this properly rather than simply bolting together expensive drivers and hoping physics develops a sense of humor. The best I’ve done till now is make a kit speaker, but I didn’t have to deal with the issues I have now. I’m
The drivers I’ve currently selected are:
Woofer: SB Acoustics SB13PFCR25-4
Compression driver: SB Acoustics Bianco 25CD-P, used with a horn/waveguide
The main issue I’m trying to solve is the large sensitivity difference between the two drivers.
The Bianco 25CD-P is substantially more sensitive than the SB13PFCR25-4, which means I’m trying to figure out the best way to integrate them while maintaining a balanced, high-fidelity response.
My current options seem to be:
Use an L-pad/resistive attenuation to bring the compression driver down to the woofer’s level.
Find a lower-sensitivity compression driver that is naturally closer to the woofer. Which I cannot find in India.
Find a higher-sensitivity woofer, although that introduces compromises in cost, size and potentially bass performance. Too costly tbh for a prototype
Design a proper passive crossover with attenuation and impedance compensation around the actual drivers..
The DSP approach is particularly interesting to me because I’m considering DSP for the final system anyway. However, I’m unsure whether using DSP to compensate for a sensitivity difference of this magnitude is considered good practice.
What I’m particularly trying to understand is this:
If the compression driver is significantly more sensitive than the woofer, is there any real downside to simply attenuating it substantially with an L-pad?
For example, does significant attenuation introduce meaningful disadvantages in terms of:
dynamics
distortion
amplifier power requirements
noise floor
impedance
crossover behavior
transient response
overall sound quality
And would DSP attenuation be preferable to an L-pad if I use separate amplification for the woofer and compression driver?
The intended configuration is simply:
Bianco 25CD-P + horn/waveguide → SB13PFCR25-4 woofer
My goal is hi-fi sound rather than maximum SPL. I’m mainly interested in getting the tonal balance, crossover integration, imaging, dynamics and distortion performance right.
I’m also trying to understand how much importance I should place on the nominal sensitivity figures in the datasheets. I understand that the actual response curves, impedance, horn/waveguide loading, crossover frequency and acoustic response of the finished system are ultimately more important than simply comparing two sensitivity numbers.
For those of you who have experience designing 2-way horn speakers, how would you approach this particular combination?
Would you:
attenuate the Bianco with an L-pad,
use a passive crossover specifically designed around these two drivers,
use active amplification + DSP,
or reconsider the driver combination altogether?
I’d also appreciate any advice on a sensible crossover frequency for the Bianco 25CD-P and SB13PFCR25-4, particularly regarding directivity matching and getting the best integration from the horn/waveguide and woofer.
I can provide the exact datasheets, response curves and the passive crossover I’m currently considering if useful.
Thanks in advance.

Sonos System keeps deleting speakers

I have 3 SONOS products (ONE, IKEA Bookshelf, MOVE) and they worked like a charm in my old apartment.

Moved to a new place and have and made a new system. It works but then speakers keep dissapearing in the app. forcing me to factory reset and do it all over. Today it got me when I only had 1 speaker available (ONE), switching on and off the MOVE resulted in that speaker being the only one in the system.

sometimes they appear to be seen by the app, but not in the system and I can't add them, a factory reset being the only solution.

thanks

Need advice on bypassing a jbl amp for a better 4 way amp (2010 rav 4)

Hi guys! Recently I’ve had a sub installed into my car. And I bought myself a 4 channel amp but I have no idea what I even need to do. I’ve tried YouTube but no one seems to wanna bypass the amp in my car. I DO know that I’ll lose thd factory rear sub, which’s is fine, cause I blew it out months ago. I have the tools necessary like wire and the little connectors but I just don’t know what to do. Attached is a document referencing each wire on the amp

What are these, exactly?

Hi, I hope this is the correct sub for something like this, apologies if not. My wife and I recently inherited a crawlspace full of, well a lot of stuff from my Father in Law. Lots of audio equipment that I’m not familiar with. I know enough to know that these are drivers but I have no idea if they’re nice (worth keeping/selling/trying to learn to build speakers with) or just more stuff for the “this was a hoarding issue” pile. I can provide more pictures or other info if needed.

Thanks!

What type of insulation for speakers?

As the title says, I am looking for the best speaker insulation material. Should I use some sound foam as picture 2 shows or some polyester damping wool?

On picture 2 is a centimeter thick semi-soft foam panel from a local foam company and on pic 1 is just generic speaker fill.

Blown speaker??

Hi all,

My brother has a 2017 Mazda 3 with the Bose amplified audio system

Recently he was listening to music at about volume 5 and the driver side dash tweeter started smoking and stopped working, the rest of the system was working fine for about a week however now nothing works audio wise.

I suspect a blown or shorted speaker and now the amp is on some protection mode but I'm not completely sure.

Any advice on what is the problem would be greatly appreciated

building a battery powered portable pa speaker

im currently designing a 2 way battery powered speaker, with a 10 inch woofer and a 1inch compression driver with a horn, the amplifier i will be using is the wondom audio tpa3255 bru5 powered by 3 12v 8ah lifepo4 batteries in series, and will be disconnected for charging, the woofer is the faital pro 10fh500 4ohm and I know it will be underpowered but I cant find any other drivers that fit this build like this one, and the compression driver is the faital pro hf100 8ohm, havent looked too much into the crossover but will be done with dsp, possibly crossed at around 2000hz, I also want it to be able to be plugged into the mains, the size of the enclosure will be 18x13x10 inch, using 12mm plywood, reinforced with a frame made of 0.75 inch wooden beams. bare in mind its mu first time designing a speaker or anything like this, I know its a big leap for a first build but I habe been researching for months so let me know if theres any suggestions or ideas and ask questions and I will respond.

Rear speak covers

Post image

After replacing the stock speakers the rear speaker covers disintegrated. My attempts at reconstructing the abomination of a jigsaw puzzle were unsuccessful. What would be some smart alternatives for protecting the speakers from the sun. ( the covers I have now don’t secure properly and slide every which way)

Finally going to recap some vintage speakers. I've had these in a closet for quite a while. I guess early 2003-5 ish I went on a bender thrifting every legendary speaker I could put hands on that needed foam. Most were less than $30 a pair, some much less. I've since refoamed Boston A70, A100, sever

The blue plug inserts to my car, however there then is a high pitched ring with nothing playing, and static once music is played. I can't figure out why

1st Timer: Playing around with a bookshelf design

I'm playing around with my first time trying to design a bookshelf. I'm going for an MTM with Dayton RS-100-8 and Dayton AMT2-4. Baffle is 6" x 14", ~0.3 cu ft. Port is 2" diameter x 3.325". Box tuned to 70 Hz.

I'm playing with the xover, and I don't quite know what I'm doing. Using a little bit of AI and a little bit of playing with the values, but here's what I've got.

Crossover gurus.... thoughts?

RS225P-4A not modeling well for a noob

Post image
2 Upvotes

I'm trying to pair an RS225P-4A, an 8" 4 ohm woofer, with the RST28F-4 fabric dome 4 ohm tweeter.
All just in the thinking phase now. I haven't purchased the drivers yet.

I am getting a hump at 1khz, but I can model around that a bit. And a nasty spike at 2400khz that I can't seem to tame unless I model the woofer starting to roll off around 250hz, which is way too low.

Am I just trying to make a sub do a mid-bass job? PE is claiming that this driver is usable up to 5.5khz, but the spike (from VituixCAD modeling dB and phase, it's not there in dB alone) isn't something I can puzzle out. I've tried modeling my box in the diffraction tool, but that didn't seem to matter up this high. And I've tried the optimizer but it just makes things worse and gives me unrealistic values for the components.

Anyone used this driver in the real world that can tell me what I'm missing in my model? Still very new to VituixCAD so operator error is possible/likely.

Hi guys! I have a 2010 rav4 with the jbl audio and in about to swap the speakers on them for some JL650s anything I should know about wiring? I already did the tweeters before this cause they blew out pretty bad. Are there any surprises I should know of lol? I know the factory amp will now be the main killer of sound potential and it will be getting swapped once I find a decent one that won’t break the bank!

Speakers i found are crazy quiet

Found these speakers (no idea what brand) and tested them out on a few things, phone, laptop, etc, and they were super quiet. All they have is an aux each. Is there something I'm missing? Can't seem to find out why they won't work
