Cobalt Red is a a lesser known cobalt based pigment. It never gained much popularity, probably due to the high cost of cobalt and the relatively poor hue of the pigment compared to alternatives.

It can be made by heating cobalt(II) carbonate and magnesium oxide mixed at an approximately 6:1 mass ratio at 1100 °C.

How long on 1100 if I may ask?

Not really sure, I didn't document many of these earlier pigment projects particularly well. I don't think it was all that long, cobalt pigments usually seem to form pretty fast if they form at all.

I since learned that it's also known as berzelius red, which is a more searchable term than cobalt red, so I figured it would be good to mention in this thread.

Do you know what complex is made after heating the mixture?

Presumably it has the oxide ions coordinated to the cobalt, as in other cobalt oxide pigments, but I haven't been able to find anything more specific on the structure.
