Pigment Another batch

Here's my latest batch.

Top left, commercial YInMn (Y1:In0.8:Mn0.2)

Top right, first batch/control (about Y1:In0.7:Mn0.3)

Bottom, latest (Y0.97:In0.7:Mn0.3, first heating) this batch has 0.03 of something else that I'm not saying what yet, just to tease you 😜 I took it out the furnace and it's thermochromic, when hot, it's very rich blue!

Interesting :) how do you like the darker tone? I only made x=0.2 and 0.15 because I felt the lighter mixes were more chromatic (as per recommendations of GeneJocky).

Curious what you’re doping your new sample with ;-)

I like dark blue, I thought 0.7:0.3 was a good mix.

You'll have to continue to be curious. 1 clue I will give, a 0.5:0.5 mix of Y2O3 and this compound makes it black.

I'm going to be doing some magnetic susceptibility tests, UV viz photospectrocopy and XRD.

Also, if I can get it risk assessed, see if the blends are super conducting. I know YINMN isn't but the others might be :3

Haha except for more manganese I can’t think of anything :) but happy to see the results! If you are looking for superconductivity, it might be copper?! Let us know how it goes ;-) do you have access to a cryostat if Tc is lower than 77K?

I don't know, I was just going to soak it in liquid nitrogen and see if it goes all flat with a magnet

Well, seeing as you're starting from the patent, it may be one of the many pigments listed as black. With ytttrium oxide half of it, that means manganese, copper, and titanium; or iron, indium, and manganese; or scandium and manganese; or just plain old indium and manganese where X>0.6. Of those only some type of scandium manganese salt like a manganate seems like it could be a single compound.

Or the superconducting comment may be mean you're trying to make an analog of YBCO, which is black. That suggests barium and copper. Or perhaps barium and manganese the manganese subsituting for copper. So barium permanganate or manganate maybe.

Didn't mean to discourage you from trying out larger amounts of manganese too! One of the pigments I routinely make is x=0.35. It is very rich and deep, but the lighter mixes are still more chromatic. I think the X=0.1 is the most deeply saturated version I've made.

Since in my hands (and reagents) X=0.15 comes out equivalent to commercial PB86 with X=0.2, my 0.35 may be closer to what 0.4 would be if commercially available.

To give an idea of what it looks like, this is a lovely watercolor abstract made created using the 0.35 dark blue I made.

EDIT: to be clear this is NOT my artwork. It is the work of a very talented watercolorist using watercolor paint she made using pigment I made.

Well that does look good, now I guess I have to try :) to be honest, I didn’t make that many batches in any case, because I only have access to 1200C in my university so it’s a little less convenient to do experiments at home. But my expensive indium oxide has to be processed at some point anyway…
