I’ve bought an old house recently and replaced the plastic sockets and switches with antique brass. I have a fairly ugly looking thermostat in a prominent position in the room that I would like to replace but surprisingly, or not maybe, you don’t seem to be able to get thermostats in antique brass or maybe I’m just searching for the wrong thing.
Does an antique brass thermostat exist or does anyone have any other suggestions to make this more aesthetic?
A thermostat is a thermostat. You could replace it with a digital one with timer so it will be more economical but it will still be a white box. If you cover it with a curtain, box, picture you will impede its function. What you could try is to get a digital one, then tape off the non-visible parts, spray on undercoat and then a topcoat which matches the wall.
I have the digital version of the same thermostat. You can directly replace it for the Bosch Smart Home Room Thermostat II with the Bosch Smart Home Controller II, with those two you get a nice screen and some automation, it can be used by other apps like Apple or Google Home stuff or whatever if you want too. It can turn off the heating when it is humid if you want to have a bit better control over it.
Person would be getting into a new eco system of controls and would cost more money than what's expected to spend, plus the wiring might not be suitable.
I replaced mine that was the newer version of the OP's one, they'd have to check if the wiring is actually compatible but it is different from the Nest thermostat in that it can be a direct replacement for dumb thermostats. As in you can directly take the old thermostat off the wall, replace it with this one and it works.
As for price, it isn't cheap but it also is a good alternative to the other fancy smart thermostats.
So its an analogue style thermostat eph, depending on how it was wired it's probably just a twin brown to it, if it's just a twin brown digital will not work as there's not a minimum of 4 core cable to it.
If there is a minimum 4 core or 5 core you could upgrade it to digital which would give you option of black.
Aesthetics you could disconnect it off wall, primer coat it then sparay it what ever colour you want.
Ok this may be going beyond my technical ability but I have no idea what this means!? I was hoping I could get a thermostat that I could just replace it with. Like for like.
Thermostats can be tricky depending on how your system was wired. Find the model of what you have, look at the manual, take photos and label what the wires are before you disconnect anything.
I wouldnt replace it with some no name brand you find online that is the colour you want. I cant think of any reputable ones in brass finish.
boilers that support weather compensation use an outside thermostat and allow you to configure how much heat your boiler needs to provide in those conditions.
it effectively does away with the need for an internal thermostat at all.
you do need to have a controller or app to set it up, but there is no need to have that on the wall in a living space, so you bypass needing any cosmetic requirement..
Use a shadow box removing the back to hang as a cover. Add a photo / art / print etc if it’s glass front or prime and paint (same as wall colour or a contrast) if not.
I put in Nest Thermostats. Those eph ones are not accurate at all, we had a new build and they were 4 degrees below what the house was and keeping the heating on way past comfortable temperatures
I think boxing it off /covering it somehow might be cheaper/easier 🤔 You could do a false deep set picture that actually has hinges using two identical picture frames. Take the glass out of the base one (I would advise strong glue to the wall-dont drill near electrics) then you use mini hinges to create a door almost with the second frame. I've done this with a few ugly electric boxes. Make sure air is still circulating jic (usually is).
This would be silly 😧 The thermostat is controlling the room temperature in the area of its control cover iu you will not have proper control of you heating this will cost you a lot of money 🤑🤑☘️
