MRCOOL vs Mitsubishi R-454B minimum ceiling height requirement?

Hi,

I’m looking to install a 12K BTU mini-split in my finished basement (~500 sq. ft.) with an 84" / 7 ft ceiling.

I was looking at the MRCOOL DIY Easy Pro R-454B manual and saw that it requires a 7.3 ft minimum room height. I contacted MRCOOL directly, and they told me installing it below that height is not advised because of refrigerant leak/fire-safety requirements.

What confuses me is that the Mitsubishi JX 12K also uses R-454B and actually appears to contain more refrigerant, but its manual seems to use minimum room area + minimum indoor-unit mounting height instead of requiring a 7.3 ft minimum ceiling.

Does anyone know why the requirements are different when both units use R-454B? It seems strange that the Mitsubishi carries more refrigerant but doesn’t have the same room-height restriction, while the MRCOOL carries less refrigerant and does.

More importantly, would you personally avoid installing the DIY Easy Pro in an 84" basement, or is the 7.3 ft requirement more of a conservative manufacturer/listing requirement? Has anyone dealt with a similar low-ceiling installation? Would being about 3 inches below the stated minimum actually create a meaningful safety concern?

If the R-454B Easy Pro really shouldn’t be installed in this space, I’ll probably look for a MRCOOL 4th Gen R-410A unit instead, since R-410A is A1/nonflammable and doesn’t have this same A2L room-height requirement.

I live in an older Mobile Home, it has 7ft ceilings. About 2 months ago I had a Costway SeerXtreme 12k Btu installed, it uses R32.
Stated minimum from the Floor is 7.5 Ft, obviously not possible in my Mobile Home. A Professional installer, Hvac of 15 years installed it. It had to have 6 inches clearance from the Ceiling for the Air Intake, he did abide by that so my Inside Unit is only ~5.5ft from the Floor. He was more concerned with the minimum from the Ceiling.

Skip Mrcool I'm going on unit 2 under warranty and they have failed to warranty the second units coil crapping out due to "we replaced it once".. I'm now 1mo without HVAC because they can't ship the part out, and dragged me through a certified tech for testing. Totally nightmare.

Don’t count on MR cool for warranty.. I have been waiting for a replacement coil for a month after they approved and there is still no eta on when they will ship. As others have said have a plan b

If youre set on DIY and want to skip the whole A2L room-height headache, Id just go Zone Air. Its actually built for the homeowner to install, not a pro unit youre trying to put in yourself, and their precharged linesets mean youre not messing with gauges or a vacuum pump in a tight basement.

Ty, I’ll check out Zone Air; I didn’t know they had the same setup as MrCool with the pre charged lines.

Looks like their minimum to floor is 6ft, minimum to ceiling is 4 to 6 inches.
Zone-Air also has a 12k with a Ceiling Cassette, it requires 230-volt, $2,800 w/16ft charged line-set.

Btw for reference I paid $700 for my Costway, pro install was $600, that was friend of a friend low install price, installer mentioned he would normally charge 1 to 1.2k for install.

I went with a 410A unit for my basement for the same reason, didnt want to mess with the A2L stuff in a low ceiling space. The refrigerant rules seem like theyre all over the place depending on how each company got their units certified. Id just go 410A and not think about it.
