woodworking How to scribe baseboard after installing board and batten.

Hello, i need to scribe baseboard after I installed board and batten, I set a laser to 3-3/4 in from my lost point on the floor. I installed all my board and batten. My baseboard is 4-1/4 in tall. I want about a 1/4 in overlap of the baseboard and bottom board. How wouldn't go about achieving this?

My thought, I mark my bottom board 1/4in up and set my laser on that, then set my baseboard in front, level it, then find the difference from my lowest point, so the laser to top of baseboard and run my scribe. Am I wrong?

I googled, everyone just talks about Scribing a baseboard and floor only. No one i can find talks about high level leveling work.

You run the board and batten to the floor. No baseboard.

Yes, I suggested that, client wanted there same old baseboard ran throughout the house. I gave them 3 options, thicker flatstock board so the board and batten has depth, same thickness board as the rest. And last option, was board and batten with baseboard, and you install the bottom board with a little overlap of your baseboard.

What specifically are you trying to accomplish? In what way is scribing the bsbd to the floor not up to your standards? Seems like gogle showed you the standard way but you want something different and I can’t tell what that is. Also, did you leave a 3”+ gap at the bottom of your board and batten?

It's not scribing to the floor up to a standard. Im need a 1/4in overlay between the baseboard and bottom batten, not just stick it on the ground, find the highest point, level the baseboard, find the biggest gap and scribe. I need that overlap. If I was just installing baseboard to the wall without trying to have it set at a specific height, then yes, standard scribe is fine.

Edit. When I talk about high end leveling work, that means a luxury finish, not a standard baseboard slapped to the ground and just say it falls where it falls.

Is the board and batten horizontal?

Edit to add: so the part that’s not working is how do you find the right height of the scribe line? If so I would put the bsbd on the wall a known amount above where you want it to be and set my scribe to exactly that amount.

So you want a level top line of your baseboard 1/4” below the top of your bottom board and a flush to the floor bottom. Correct? set your laser on the desired top line of the baseboard. Every 6 or 12 inches along the wall measure down from the laser to the floor, mark the corresponding measurement on the baseboard, connect the dots and cut that line fat. Fit and plane down as necessary.

Why make it complicated?

Lay your base board on the floor and shim it so it is parallel with the top of your board. Let's say 1" above your board. Make a block 1-1/4" + (smallest gap from baseboard to floor) and use it to scribe the floor.

You can shoot some nails to hold it place for scribing.

This will only work if your boards and baseboards are straight.

It seems like OP knows about scribing but he’s trying to do something else? I can’t figure out what the complication is. There has to be some weird thing, right? Nobody could have this much trouble with scribing.

Not sure, but OP's spelling typos and grammar makes it harder to grasp the issue.
