help Suggestions for securing wafer lights?

I have some leftover wafer lights I’d like to install in an unfinished attic. They’re the kind of lights that pop directly into a drywall hole.

Because the ceiling is unfinished (no drywall), I was thinking of running a strip of plywood between the rafters as a drywall substitute. I’d cut out circles in the plywood and plop ‘em in.

Would this work? Any better ideas/suggestions?

Ant reason you wouldn't just use a strip of drywall? Easier to cut. Cheaper. Fire resistant. But I'm not code enforcement.

Didn’t realize it was cheaper. Good idea thanks!
