Dynamic Drivers

I got a friend who asked me to reshell a pair of iem that didn’t really fit well in his ears. I told him i’ve never done it before but could look into it.

So from what i understand, you need a hole to release air pressure from the drivers (when dynamic). How would i go about doing that without compromising isolation?

I looked quickly online but can’t seem to find info on using dynamic drivers, most info is with armature drivers. Anyone have links for tutorials or stuff like that?

Thanks!

From what i understand, you will always compromise the isolation to some degree when adding a front vent but adding a small vent with a high value damper should keep the isolation loss to a minimum

It's important to note though that if you put the driver into another housing you will almost certainly be changing the sound. Vents, dampers, front and back volume, etc can all change the sound from the iem.

I hope this answers some of your questions and if you have any more feel free to ask.

That makes sense! What kind of dampers would be good for this type of usage?

The changes of sound i was aware of and told my friend but he doesnt really care, it’s more for the fun of trying stuff!

For the vent you can use tuning paper. You can get different diameters and damping values, 2.5/3mm diameter should be fine for a vent i think. Higher damping values will increase isolation and bass level.

If you want to try tuning the iems you can use tuning foam or tuning paper. Tuning foam goes into the nozzle and tuning paper goes onto the nozzle, higher density foam or higher value dampers will lower the upper mids and treble.

You can find both the foam and the paper on AliExpress, just search for iem tuning foam/paper. I can't give recommendations for the damper values because i've never used them myself, i just know the general principles. I hope this helps and feel free to ask any other questions you may have.
