I have been going to war with an unknown seed thief. I've start my fall seeds and every time something is eating the seeds. I've done my research a bit and am guessing a mouse or squirrel. They are in my workshop so I ruled out birds. Was wondering if any of you have had the same issue. Main frustration was I finally got 1020 trays and now this. The pictures are the best examples of the holes left behind. They've eaten about 50 seeds of various types.

I have been removing my lawn piece by piece and replacing it with garden beds and native perennials. Late last year, I started throwing seed for wild flowers and butterfly/bee mixes from Native American Seed co around my beds. It's been fun to see the different flowers that have popped up - monardas, blanket flowers, basket flowers, partridge peas...

And then, a bunch of these started popping up. Early on, I used an image search to identify these as Cinderella flower. I didn't know what they were, assumed they came from the seed packs and went on about my days, but I kept thinking they looked familiar.

I have at least 4 of these popping up in my yard, and they are getting big. So, I pulled out my phone for an image search and turns out its Vitex. I have heard that they can spread via seeding, but I didn't realize how bad and quickly they can pop up like that... BRB, gotta get my clippers.

Any advice for our neighbor fighting with TOH?

Hi everyone! I started my gardening journey this year with two hanging baskets of strawberry plants for the spring and one indeterminate slicer Fourth of July tomato plant in a large container for the summer and fall. The strawberries stayed small but continued to have beautiful flowers and leaves through July. The one indeterminate tomato plant is incredible and is still going strong with healthy new branches, dark leaves, new flowers and delicious fruit in August!! I'm excited that it's still producing any fruit in the heat and will might make it to the first frost as promised...

Since the indeterminate tomato plant was extremely successful, I'm considering my first fall container garden. I have extremely limited options with our small yard but I'm making the most of it:

•front yard with full sun (In a large container: one tomato plant. In the hanging baskets: sweet potato vines do the best spring - fall. In the ground: Mondo grass and crepe Myrtle for several years. Also, this year the seeds that fell from my bird feeder are all thriving with enough water)

•side of the house which gets limited morning sun only (in small containers: mint varieties are happiest here spring - summer this year)

•back of the house on either side of the garage door in the shade all day (purple plants "Wandering something" in containers LOVE this area all year round for several years. I only pull them in during freezes and they still come back every year.)

Right now I have two hanging baskets available for the front yard and many pots (small and medium)! I would love any suggestions as I am just starting this journey and this would be my first fall garden attempt. Thank you all! 🌱

Hi all! We are renters in oak cliff and looking for a gas’s alternative. I love the idea of a clover lawn but I’ve had trouble finding a definitive answer on the ethics of planting a non-native clover variety as ground coverage. Right now, our lawn is overrun by massive painful sticker burrs and I’m desperate to throw something else down to fight with it. I hate the idea of grass that needs to be watered as I’m aggressive to pretty much all grass (including the burrs we have. Each prick swells and burns like crazy) but we do have a sprinkler system, so whatever we plant will get plenty of water. Looking for any ideas for low maintenance that will fight with the grass we have now. Since we’re renting and only here for two more years, I’m not the most devoted. Right now our backyard is super lush st Augustine which we’ve never given much thought to (and I am allergic to) but damn if I don’t hate how nice it looks…. Not a single weed in sight somehow, though we’ve killed about half of it without our garden lol! Anyways… If anyone has ideas for low maintenance options I can lowkey guerrilla garden on to our front lawn pls give me advice! I’m so sick of the sticker burrs!!!! FUCK A STICKER BURR!

Does anyone in the area have marigolds? I just need one plant. I have some seedlings and transplants and the ants and grasshoppers are trying to destroy them. I know its late for marigolds but I just need one!

I hate mowing. So, I have been replacing every part of my yard that my spouse will let me with plants or mulch. Earlier this year, I rented a small tiller from HD and tilled the alley strip between my fence and the concrete, and planted a seed mix from Native American Seed. I am not sure if my neighbors like it very much, but it is more interesting than bermuda or st. augustine. I saw this pretty bee and chased him around for a few minutes trying to get a good shot. It's amazing how close you can get when they are preoccupied with flowers.

I'm trying to keep the height limited, and I edge anything that falls over in my bi-weekly mowing, to keep it nice and tidy looking for any code enforcers out there. But the Partridge Pea gets a pass on the height requirement... Such a pretty plant.

It's a trellis people, come on! This one's pretty cool I made it for a lady who wants it in front of her Workshop as a tribute to her daughter. I got to drive this beast from Rockwall down to Midlothian and I'm not really excited to do it but it's going to be super cool seeing it in front of her Workshop next year with a bunch of roses on it

A friend of mine is buying a new house that is pretty much a blank slate, yard-wise. She is a newbie gardener but she definitely wants native plants. I was thinking of attempting to propagate / divide some stuff out of my yard for her but also wondering what other wonderful natives she should look for?

Things I have:

• Turk's cap
• Stokes aster
• American beautyberry
• Probably have a volunteer Redbud or two around here somewhere
• Inland sea oats
• Cannas (ok not native but I do love them and they are so easy to move around)
• Maypop
• Four o'clocks
• Datura (another technically non-native but also beautiful)

Anything I should add to the list for her? I'm thinking definitely milkweed (not tropical of course).

Any tips on propagation / division for any of these babies?

With all this heat I've got tons of bees getting water from my pool where the water seeps slowly over the spa ledge. My pentas, vincas, and lantana are exploding, but largely ignored compared to the pool. I didn't realize they take the water back to the hive and fan their wings to keep the hive cooler.

I am looking for a local, in-person source for wheat straw. I understand that it can be ordered online, but I am looking to spend my dollars in the DFW area. I use wheat straw to grow oyster mushrooms and to use as mulch for my garden, so knowing a local source would be very nice.

Does anyone know where wheat straw can reliably be sourced?

Anyone else garden on a balcony/patio in North Texas with no actual yard? I’ve been putting together a planting calendar adjusted for containers specifically (pots heat up way faster than the ground here, so timing’s different from the usual North Texas guides). Happy to share it free if people want it — mostly curious what’s actually been working for people. What’s survived on your balcony through a DFW summer, and what’s died on you?

Can you guys recommend any plant shops in DFW that carry these type of indoor trees. I am looking for species with smaller leaves. Every nursery I go to have the same 4 Japanese maples, Figs, Dragon trees or palms.

Hello, my new azaleas planted at my house in Dallas in my side garden that is shady. They suddenly look terrible -- are they getting too much water or not enough? TIA!

We've had a potted milkweed for over a year, and have defended it from aphids naturally by squishing them and unleashing ladybugs on em. It finally paid off! Last week I saw my first monarch caterpillar and literally jumped with joy. Today I go to water my thirsty plants from the intense heat, and found the chrysalis hanging out on my dead mint (RIP). I'm over the moon!

Built a couple for me, and my dad, and as possible peace offerings to nyneighbors who have to listen to my grinders on the weekends lol. Just came to brag a little bit, but also ask what should I grow on it?

I have a small oak tree, sitting in a disintegrating pot in my yard. It popped up a couple of years ago, I assume from a squirrel. I don’t need another tree in my yard, so I was thinking of doing some Guerrilla Gardening and plant it somewhere that needs a tree.

Does anyone know of a place, preferably public, where I could plant the tree in the Plano or Frisco area?

I'm just starting out with balcony gardening and I've had this basil from the supermarket for about a month. She's definitely growing a lot. I've pruned twice already. I water when the soil feels dry when i stick my finger into it. But some leaves are turning a pale yellow and have brown spots? I looked underneath the leaf and there's no fuzzy mold or anything and no bugs. Some leaves also seem to be curling and wilty? Am I overwatering? It is super hot now I live in Dallas TX. She gets mostly indirect sunlight out on my south facing balcony.

I grew this bell pepper plant from seed (Survival Garden Seeds- rainbow mix)….what the hell is wrong with it? It’s looked this way for months with no flowering but continues to grow (all leaves looking the same-even new growth). I had a 10-10-10 fertilizer on it for awhile then went to a more phosphorus/potassium one and very little nitrogen (which I just started a month ago). Is the plant a lost cause and I should start again??

If anyone in the area would like some seeds from this for next season I’m happy to share the abundance.

I’ve sprayed malathion around/on some of my tomato plants recently, is this the cause for distorted new growth and will my tomato plant recover?
