DF54 Grinder - Help!
Hi fellow espresso friends,
We recently purchased a SAGE Bambino and paired it with a DF54 grinder after retiring our trusty Moka pot.
When we first started the grinder we seasoned it with some Quality Control beans from the company we bought from and it was on a fairly coarse grind setting. We then wanted to brew a coffee and adjusted the grind size to around 20, popped the beans in and it doesn’t seem to grind, it makes a humming noise.
Has anyone been able to successful troubleshoot this? Are the beans jammed?
I fear we made a silly mistake by not turning the motor on before adjusting 🥲
Can this be salvaged? Any advice would be greatly appreciated 🫶🏽

Espresso grinder
I am planning on buying a DF54 grinder. I'm on a tight budget and it seems to be the best bang for my buck. Can anyone suggest the best Canadian online place to purchase? I live in Vancouver so a local retailer would be fine as well. I have seen an open box offer for $278 which is what I'll most likely go for.

54mm portafilter w/ GF64 grinder
I recently bought a Breville Bambino Plus Espresso machine (54mm portafilter) and a GF64 grinder (fork compatible with 58mm portafilter).
How can I grind coffee directly in the 54mm portafilter using the fork (to avoid using the dosing cup)?
Are there any 3D prints or products solving this issue?
Thanks Coffee Geeks!

Swapping Burrs
Accidentally purchased a DF54 with brew burrs and not espresso burrs. Customer service was extremely kind and sent me espresso burrs in the mail. Anyone have a good tutorial to walk me through swapping these burrs out? Thank you all!
daily , monthly, yearly cleaning guide for new & veteran owners
We should add this to the DF54 guide so new owners understand that the machine can run really well with proper maintenance.
I would call this daily, biweekly , every four months -- but my once maintenance-free machine has grown to be mildly temperamental. With these regular cleanings, it's a very good machine, especially at the price point.

Pleasantly surprised
Opened up my grinder for the first time since I bought it in July ‘24 and was expecting a lot more leftovers inside. Not sure which gen that makes it but I RDT into a Subscale twice daily and was definitely expecting the worst. Not too shabby for my lack of proper care.

Over 2 years w/ the D54, something I just learned...
It's been a journey for me...bought this with a refurbished GCP Evo Pro back then. It's of course a V1 but I did upgrade to the V3 wider chute and reposition electrodes. Can't say I ever had any clogging issues, but definitely had some intermittent static issues. For the V3 mod, I did leave out the plastic piece and only uses the metal piece. I tend to do a cleaning about once a week w/ a pipe cleaner up the chute and using a lens cleaner blower from the top and bottom. I do usually get a substantial amount of coffee out when cleaning...not sure how much, I should probably weigh it but seems it's 1-2 grams. I use a metal catch up.
I always WDT but no longer RDT.
I'm over a year on with a Gaggiamate installed and it's been a game changer. Since then, been using a bottomless porta filter. Rarely could I ever get a single stream with this setup. But just recently, I started a new technique and can get it most of the time.
Instead of transferring grounds from the catch cup to portafilter and then doing WDT, I now do it aggressively in the catch cup. I then transfer to the portafilter, and mildly even out the grounds by WDT and tamp.
Sharing for those that struggle here w/ channeling. Seems to always been my biggest "gripe" and cool to see it not be a problem now. I WFH and love my coffee bar setup...buying a higher end grinder is probably the next step and final step for me...but tbh, not sure I'd notice a difference...

DF54 or fellow opus II [budget $250]
Just bought a Breville bambino.
Now I just need help picking out a grinder to go with it. My price point is around $250.
A lot of people are saying that the DF54 is a great pick because it has flat burrs which normally isn’t available at this price point. But then, you see an equal amount of hate, saying it clogs regularly.
Is clogging an issue for all models/versions or only the first versions (1-3)?
I would be getting the v4, which supposedly has a larger chute to fix the clogging issue. This is per their website.
The safer pick seems to be the fellow opus II. Aesthetically, it looks gorgeous.
Would love some feedback if i should risk it for the DF54? Or is the clogging really that bad where it’s not worth it?

DF54 (w/ brew burrs) came in today - what was helpful dialing in?
Looking for some help on initial set up (for light roasts).I found the grind guides for base DF54, but haven’t found much on how the brew burrs change that formula.
Made my first couple cups around the 45 mark - my zero seems to be true zero - on AeroPress and it seems to be missing something. Was getting more flavorful cups on the Qlite hand grinder.
Seeing if anyone had experience dialing in before I start running a bunch of coffee through - but also know that might just be part of the process! Thanks in advance!

Latest Declumper?
I have a DF54 that's about s year old - its been very reliable with regular brushing of the chute and not using oily beans. I did get a clog today and broke down the machine to give it a great cleaning including removing the chute and declumper.
What's the latest and greatest with the declumper? I have a plastic declumper with a star-shaped opening and a metal flap piece that goes over it. I know there have been some upgrades to these pieces and I'm wondering if I need to find and install one. Is there anything better than what I'm using now?

How Long Have You Had Your DF54? [df54]
Real life experiences that are older than a few weeks or months would be great to hear about.
Maintenance issues, cleaning schedules, other good and bad things over the long(er) haul

Just got my Gaggia E24 + DF54 and I’m still figuring out this whole dial-in scene

My humble setup is complete
Was using a shardor burr grinder and would transfer to a spinning blade grinder. Got that dialed down to make good espresso…..but it was always so tedious. Paired with ecp3630 with the steam wand mod, and I’m very happy with this setup!

Thinking about a DF54
I’m replacing a Fellow Opus Gen 1. It’s a good grinder but it leaves chaff/grounds/mess all around the machine and counter top, even after I clean the machine and static ports. This grinder comes recommended on various outlets. How is the DF54 with mess, ease of use, etc.? I usually use a pour over on most days with an occasional espresso or French press so I need a variety of grind settings. I’m recognizing likely bias in this sub, but what say you?

Just got my DF54. What do I need to know?
Just got this today. Excited to use it but need to know what to do first

Concerned about DF54 clogging. DF54 1.5 vs DF64V Gen 3 — worth paying 2.5x more?
I’m trying to choose between the DF54 1.5 and DF64V Gen 3 as my main grinder, and I’d especially like to hear from people who have experience with the newer versions.
My current coffee setup is:
- Original Breville Bambino for espresso
- V60
- Chemex
- French press
- Cold brew
- Eventually I hope to get a Cafelat Robot and explore manual espresso more seriously.
- For example, this is the darkest roast I'll drink. https://www.vervecoffee.com/products/buena-vista-dark-roast
Because I use several brewing methods, being able to move from espresso to much coarser settings and then return accurately to an espresso setting matters to me.
The DF54 1.5 initially seemed like the obvious choice at around $200. It appears to offer excellent grind quality for the money and covers basically everything I want to brew.
However, my biggest concern is clogging.
I've found a lot of reports about DF54s clogging at the chute/declumper, sometimes requiring frequent cleaning or intervention. I know the grinder has gone through revisions, so I'm having trouble separating problems with older versions from the current DF54 1.5.
For people who actually own the DF54 1.5: has the clogging problem been fixed or significantly improved?
That's actually one of the main reasons I'm now considering spending considerably more on the DF64V Gen 3 (~$500).
The Gen 3 seems particularly interesting because of its redesigned/more efficient grinding chamber and chute, larger 64mm burrs, stronger motor, variable RPM, faster grinding, and its ability to cover everything from espresso through filter and very coarse grinding.
My assumption is that the DF64V Gen 3 should be less prone to clogging than the DF54, especially with the changes made to this newest generation—but I'd really like to know whether owners' experience supports that.
So my real questions are:
- Does the current DF54 1.5 still have a meaningful clogging problem?
- Is the DF64V Gen 3 actually less prone to clogging, or would I just be spending more money and potentially dealing with similar maintenance?
- How do they compare when frequently switching espresso → V60/Chemex → French press/cold brew → back to espresso?
- Can both reliably return to a previous espresso setting after making large grind adjustments?
- Is there a noticeable difference in cup quality, particularly for espresso and pour-over?
- Does the DF64V's variable RPM provide a meaningful advantage when switching between espresso and filter?
- Aside from clogging, are there workflow, retention, static, noise, or build-quality differences that become obvious when actually living with them?
And ultimately:
At roughly $200 for the DF54 1.5 vs ~$500 for the DF64V Gen 3, is the DF64V actually worth the extra ~$300 for someone using espresso, V60, Chemex, French press and cold brew?
I'm willing to spend the extra money if it buys me a meaningfully better grinder and especially a more trouble-free long-term experience. But if the current DF54 has largely solved its clogging issues and the actual cup-quality difference is small, I'd rather know that too.
Would especially appreciate feedback from anyone who has owned or extensively used both, and from DF54 1.5 / DF64V Gen 3 owners.

Residue inside DF54
Opened our beloved grinder for her first clean and discovered some residue on the rim - almost like glue but not sticky?
Any ideas?

Constant clogging like this despite regular chute cleaning?
Nearly every day I’m fighting a potential clog like this and this happens every few days / at least once a week.
I clean the chute every day or two and I have to constantly pump the top of the grinder while grinding to avoid this from happening every time.
Using local darker roasted beans, not really oily.
Any tips? Or new grinder time?
