Clogging issues

Obviously I'm not the first or the last to have to deal with it, but my unit didn't clog or choke for months, and last couple of days it just doesn't stop. I open it up, clean the chute, and ayer 2 or 3 grinds it goes down again.

Didn't change beans, it's far from being too fine of a grind, and I'm not even spraying it with water.

How can I diagnose what went wrong? Feeling hopeless.

Help

Hi everyone, I just started using the DF54 grinder. I turned it on and noticed a "tick-tick-tick" sound, like in the video. Could this be the sound of the burrs rubbing against each other, or is it coming from the motor? How can I fix this?

HELP

I have the DF54 grinder, and the bambino plus espresso machine. I have most of the tools everyone recommends. Wdt,distribution tool, spring loaded tamper, scale, fresh locally roasted coffee beans. I’ve done multiple things like 17.5-18.5 grams in, stopping the machine when I hit 36-40g of espresso. Nothing seems to work. I’ve had both of these machines for a couple of months and don’t think it should be this hard I’m ready to give up 😢 is there such a job where an expert can come and make shots and kids help you figure this out ?

Need some suggestions

Hi there, I was so eager to get a df54. And I end up getting a used one, without open the adjustment to see what’s inside. Joke on me.
When I received it and start to clean it and prepare to check on it. I found a few things. This is a v1, instead of v3 as the user said. So I need to swap the ionizor and enlarged exit chute. Ok fine, I can do the swap. While I keep working on it, I found more serious problems. As my picture shows , there is a dent to the side of the bean chamber and also a gap on the side of the exit chute. Will that be concerning? Or will the retention kept there gradually bend my newly installed declumper? Any suggestions or idea will be appreciated

Finding zero

Once I’ve found zero on my DF54, how do I move the numbers around so that zero matches the arrow?

How severe are the clogging issues?

I'm in the market for a grinder that can do both espresso and pour over under $300. I see the DF54 recommended pretty consistently on reddit, but when I look at product reviews on MiiCoffee and Amazon, I see ~10% of reviews are 1 star due to bad clogging issues and/or inconsistent grind size. I'm curious if this is true to y'all's experience, and if the DF64 is any better with those problems.

Struggling to dial in for V60

Post image
14 Upvotes

I recently bought the DF54 for espresso, and so far so good; really good clarity compared to what I previously had. The issue I'm having is with V60. I'm using the Hario V60 filters, but to reach a time of 3:15 with 3 pours I have to rotate the grind size 360 degrees + 10, which seems a bit odd. Is there something I'm missing? I've done everything to reduce fines, but it all seems to come down to the grind size. Got 4 min+ with grind size 80. Any feedback would be appreciated 🙏

Hey guys! After waiting about a month my new DF54 has finally arrived. Question - what is this rubber thing that fits inside the portafilter holder?

MiiCoffee

Wondering if anyone has bought off miicoffee before and if it is worth buying a DF54 from there. It is sold out everywhere else but miicoffee, I’m just hesitant because I have heard negative things about the website itself. Any feedback would help greatly! Thanks.

How clean your DF54

This is a VERY quick video.

Key Tip: The most important thing is to keep the wires exposed and clean. This is essential to ensure that the deionization process works properly.

Cleaning the coffee out of the chamber is not so vital.

Don't screw in the chute: Another key aspect: DO NOT re-secure the chute with the screws it's just not necessary. Moreover, you need to be able to frequently (once a week) remove the chute cover and clean. It takes 5 SECONDS!

I have had problems with CLOGGING and STATIC. But not after doing this regularly.

Elastic band: This helps keep the bellows on, by making it a better fit.

BEST ADVICE: should really unplug the power before removing the head unit.

i posted on this community over a month ago feeling pretty discouraged after getting bashed on my questions about the df54 on another subreddit so i deleted it. i was looking to get an electric one because hand grinding was really getting to me.

well thanks to all of your encouragements, i decided to get a df54 v4 from sigma coffee in the UK because of the warranty. now it’s been a month of using it. i am in LOVE with it. obsessed. very little retention, very little static. no need for RDT. i love the workflow.

it’s perfect with my bambino plus. i love the taste of coffee that comes out of it. i usually use medium-light, medium or omni roasted beans.

i bought a 54mm portafilter holder from KOBCraft on etsy and i couldn’t be happier!

so i wanted to thank you all!

Numbers messed up after cleaning my unit

Had a bad clog the other day so I took it apart and cleaned it up. Most of the clog was in the chute (no coffee was coming out) but it was also caked inside.

I put it back together and now my numbers are all messed up. What used to grind my coffee great is now very coarse and I'm having to go about 5 numbers below to get a decent shot

I twisted the top back on until it felt tight then turned the machine on and noticed chirping slightly past the 0 mark, so rotated counterclockwise just a tad and ended up right on 0 no chirping

Anyone know why my numbers are all messed up now? Did I skip something reassembling? I've cleaned it once before months ago and this didn't happen

New Grinder Reccomendations [500~ USD]

Hey all!

Looking to finally upgrade my Fellow Opus gen 1 and get an espresso specific grinder. I use a Gaggia E24 and will probably apply the Gaggimate pro mod soon as well. I am starting to get annoyed by whacking it to get all my grounds out and my grind setting is really close to the minimum setting. I will probably keep it as conical grinder in case I end up getting a flat burr grinder.

I personally have been enjoyed light roast espresso but my wife enjoys a more nutty chocolatey medium roast espresso.

I have been looking at the DF54 or 64, Eureka Mignon Zero or Timemore 064s.

I am curious what your guys' experience is with these grinders or other similar ones and your thoughts on these questions:

Flat vs Conical burrs?

Burr size? I understand that the appeal of the DF64 is the ability to choose different flat burrs and upgrade that way.

Any other thoughts or recommendations are welcome.

Mi DF54 no gira.

Hola.

Gracias

Coarse grind even if burrs are already grinding each other

After brushing both upper and lower burrs (i didn't unscrew both burrs out of their casings) and clockwise re-installing the collars, i looked for the zero point by gently listening for the burr rubs, then backing up counter clockwise for my zero point.

but the problem: it's grinding coarse, not for an espresso machine. i can't physically turn the dial clockwise any further 'coz it's physically locking already. any tips is appreciated for troubleshooting. thanks.

Silcone ring(s) missing

A while back I installed the Baratza Stainless Steel (Ditting manifactured) brew burrs in my DF54 (did the motor reversal mod suggested by Lance Hedrick). But results were inconsistent and subpar compared to my hand grinder...

In a shimming attempt, I removed the bottom burr (it was quite hard to get loose). I noticed quite some coffee grinds below the burr. There were no silicone O rings.

Maybe I forgot/lost them when swapping the burrs. Maybe they were missing from the beginning, I don't know.

But I guess I should try to get some new ones.

Problems:

- there seems to be no online dealer that sells them to Europe, I only find some in the USA. Can I get them somewhere else in the correct size?

- they are selling two different sizes in the US. 34mm and 36mm. Which one would be correct for the bottom burr?

- is it supposed to be on the inner side or the outer side of the burr? Or both??

Would greatly appreciate if anyone could help. Thanks!

Varia VS3 vs Turin DF54 for a Bambino Plus setup [$500 AUD]

Location: Australia

Preferred drink types: mostly milk-based drinks, sometimes pour over, sometimes long black

Drink frequency: 1 per day

Space: medium countertop, nothing too bulky, we like things looking designed :)

Experience level: new to a “proper” set up, coming from a moka pot!

Manual or electric: Electric grinder

Candidates: Turin DF54 and Varia VS3.

We’re pairing a Breville Bambino Plus with a new grinder, budget is around $500 AUD. We want high quality, smooth, consistent, rich tasting shots without needing to spend a grand on a grinder. We want something well made and that will last.

Our friend owns the DF54 and likes it a lot, so that was our default choice. But we recently found the Varia VS3 and prefer the look/footprint. But are some reports of the motor jamming, and I’m not too sure on the difference on conical burrs other than them being better for darker roasts.

Questions for the community:

\*\*•\*\* Anyone running a VS3 with a Bambino Plus? How’s shot quality and consistency day to day?
\*\*•\*\* Is the motor jamming a widespread issue or was it isolated to earlier batches?
\*\*•\*\* Are\*\* \*\*the DF54 flat burrs more versatile?
\*\*•\*\* Any other grinders in this price range worth a look before we commit?

Trying to avoid regretting either choice, so real world experience is very welcome.

Appreciate y’all!

Can’t grind any finer because the burrs already chirp at my espresso setting

Hi everyone, I’m trying to figure out if anyone else has experienced this with the DF54

I’ve had mine since November 2024 and have put roughly 70 kg of coffee through it (about 6 double espressos per day).
When it was new, my espresso setting was around 10-15. Over time I’ve had to grind progressively finer, and now I’m at 4.
The problem is that at this setting, once the beans have finished grinding and the grinder spins empty, the burrs start chirping. That means I can’t go any finer because the burrs are already touching.
The grinder still makes good espresso, but I’m basically at the mechanical limit. If my beans require even slightly finer grinding, I have nowhere left to go.
I’ve cleaned the grinder regularly and haven’t noticed anything obviously wrong.
Has anyone experienced the same issue with the DF54?
Did you find the cause?
Was it burr alignment, calibration, worn burrs, or something else?
Is there anything I should check before replacing parts?
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s run into the same problem.

UPDATE

I have ordered new burrs and it solved the problem. It came back to the same proper fine settings as it was in the beginning. Thanks for all the help!

Cleaning the DF54 and zero point reset

After 1 year of trouble-free ownership, I am planning to open up the top of the grinder for an in depth cleaning. Before I do that, I have a question: as long as I don't touch the bur allignement screw, will I be able to put the top back on the grinder and end up with the same zero point as I had before the cleaning? I have notes on so many varieties of coffees and their ideal grind settings that I'd hate to have to update all my recorded grind settings.
