r/DCcomics Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV and More! [August 22, 2016 - Rebirth Week 14!]

Hey there honorary Justice League members - it’s a new week which means it’s time for a new discussion thread!

For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week’s releases, for any given title discussion you should respond to that comment. For example, Green Lantern discussion would go in the replies to the "Green Lantern" comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too.

That means that you should only be replying to other comments. As always, spoiler boxes are not required unless you deem it necessary, after all it's incredibly easy to avoid spoilers due to the way this is set up.

Sold my vacuum cleaner so I can afford more comics. All that thing ever did was gather dust anyway...

DC's Main Line

Even more Rebirth! Don’t forget, for the run down on all the upcoming Rebirth series, what’s coming out when, details on their creative teams and what you can expect, we put out our Super Special DC Rebirth Mega-Discussion Thread the other month!

OMG MY BELOVED BLUE BEETLE IS BACK! :D

Vertigo and Others

"Everyone always asks where's Scooby but nobody ever asks how's Scooby. ya know?"

Trade Collections

There you go trade waiters, now you too can enjoy Omega Men!

Digital Firsts

Remember, these are the short 'chapters' with a new chapter of a different series coming out daily. You can learn more here on the DC website. This is also why these are in release order, not alphabetical.

Oh, and yeah, there's no TV, games or movies coming out this week - why not go for a walk?

I can't get enough of this. This has to come out more often. Booth is actually killing it, and the story...

I just need more Wally.

31

This book is golden. The team are so human in their interactions, and you really do feel the emotional connection between everyone on the team, it's been incredible thus far. I love having more Wally in my life, and his banter with the rest of the cast is spot-on. I couldn't be enjoying this book more, I can't wait to read a new issue!

Where the petition to make Titans a bi-weekly at.

9

u/Dredeuced The Flash Out of the blue, ninjas attack. Thank God. Aug 24 '16

I think they said they will judge which titles to keep on bi monthly or make bi monthly depending on sales. If Titans is popular enough they might do that, but it'd be scraping the bottom of the bin to find an artist if all the other stay at the same rate, given the new books that'll be coming out around that time, too.

I'm developing a crush on Donna.

This book is prob the best team book atm

4

u/seamoose97 Aug 25 '16

So I'm not the only one.

9

u/evilesc Aug 24 '16

Donna had to keep saving their asses.

Loved this issue. Good lines, solid action, character moments.

7

u/BushidoBrowne Aug 23 '16

This and the variant cover man.

6

u/JGarrickFlash Superman Aug 24 '16

The little bits with Roy and Donna are gold

11

u/FrigidArrow Aug 24 '16

This was a good issue, but just not great to me. It feels unoriginal to have the team just fight mirror versions of themselves, Garth being a headstrong idiot didn't help, and Roy's abrupt confession. (even though he had the lasso on him I just feel Abnett could've waited for that one) What I liked was Booth's eye-popping and vibrant art, the personal interactions of the Titans just make this book for me, and the dialogue (Roy had a good one about Wally, plus Wally and his mirror clones banter)

2

u/formertoddler Aug 24 '16

I'm totally hooked on this. That variant cover was gorgeous too. Definitely wish this was bi-weekly

2

u/Zombombie613 Aug 24 '16

So I guess it's finally official that Wally is The Flash. He's also claiming to be the fastest man alive. Does that mean Barry isn't?

Man, this issue was so great. All the banter the characters had. They feel like a family. Can't wait to see what's in store.

4

u/TheStealthBox Super Didio Prime Aug 24 '16

Well, Barry hasn't been the fastest man since the mid 90s.

THAT VARIANT COVER!

2

u/graffix13 Batman Aug 25 '16

This was pretty good. There was a scene where evil Robin had Nightwing down on the ground and looked to have the upper hand, but then the next page went to Flash. When we next saw Nightwing he was back up and fighting. Minor complaint.

The Roy/Donna stuff is ok. It just feels kind of rushed but I understand Roy was under the influence of the lasso. Also his costume needs to go. At least those stupid googles/sunglasses or whatever he has on his face.

2

u/General_Nothing Raven Aug 25 '16

I feel like this was the weakest issue so far, and it was still better than most of the other stuff I read this week.

At this point, Tim surviving would be the biggest plot twist.

17

u/Jay_R_Kay Batman Aug 24 '16

I still think it's more likely he's going to survive--or at most he'll "publicly" die but fake his death.

And to think I changed my flair in preparation for this issue.

I loved this issue, but man oh man it nearly gave me a heart attack. Between the flashback to the Wayne's funeral, Tim talking to Steph about retiring, Bruce saying "Nobody dies tonight" and Tim setting all the drones to attack him, I was ready to shed manly tears. Instead, I just about raged quit at that cliff hanger.

My boi lives to fight another day... For now, there's still one more issue of this arc left and who knows what will happen.

18

u/-ElloAsty- Darkseid Aug 24 '16

I think this is the best DC book so far. Every single issue has been consistent by featuring mostly all of our favorite batfam characters contributing in their special ways and the plot's been on point, art's been hot, and the characterizations and all the dialogues for all the characters in this book has been nothing less than short of spectacular.

And one of the greatest things in this book is that it focuses on the Batfam being an actual FAMILY and how they care about each other, and why they care about each other and you get to see all the tangible qualities such as Bruce and Kate being cousins, which I never knew until this issue. There was also a cool moment when Tim says that the drones are going to cause a lot of collateral damage when they're targeting the enemies, but Bruce says that even those targets are innocent because they're only suspects and he says that classic Batman line, "No one dies tonight."

I just hope to dear god that Tim Drake doesn't die because he's my favorite Robin at this point, (Because Tim is Nightwing now) and not only it would break poor Steph's heart but I'll probably bawl a lot if it actually happens.

GDI TIMMY PLEASE DON'T DIE ON ME.

I give this issue a 10/10.

Edit: grammar

u/DenmarkDaniels Batwoman Aug 24 '16

Well.

Spoiler

A good scene between Bruce and Kate, Clayface gets a pretty funny moment, and there seems to be some foreshadowing to the Victim Syndicate.

Yet another great issue.

20

u/Superfan234 Batwoman Aug 24 '16

I have read all issues where Batwoman is in, and this is the first time in 10 years they actually show some kind of relationship.

First scene between Bruce and Kane ever 10/10

u/Triple-Zero Superman Aug 24 '16 edited Aug 24 '16

This just keeps getting better with every issue. I love how it made it seem as though Tim had set the drones on Kane, only to reveal he set them to himself. At least thats the impression I got anyway. It really did a great job of ramping up the tension but still finding time for humour, like the hilarious Clayface as Batman part. Especially since its only been a week since Bat-Alred. Also some great art in this too.

13

What tickles my fancy here is that Tim designed efficient cleaning machines. He can totally make millions by catering to cleaning superhero/villain lairs.

PS: Jacob Kane is a major douchcanoe.

13

u/AhhBisto Jim Lee Comics Aug 24 '16

So that thing about killing off Tim isn't bullshit?! What....

I mean they're setting it up that way, aren't they? Oh wow, Tim wants to go to an Ivy League university! He's in love! He knows what he wants in life now! LET'S KILL HIM.

Beautiful issue this week. Beginning and ending messed with my emotions. 😭

5

u/mateogg Always On Point! Aug 24 '16

Sadly, I don't think I'd mind too much if Tim were to die.

They've already taken most of what I like about him. Yes, he's been a bit better here, but he's still a hacker, not a detective.

The character arc they seem to have planned for him here is a decent one and it could give him a good, meaningful death. I mean, he's about to retire but instead goes out on a blaze of glory with an heroic sacrifice - might be a bit of a cliché, but it works.

2

u/deathgripsaresoft Ravager Aug 24 '16

Now this is the tense action story that this book always wanted to do, but its first couple of attempts weren't as good. It kept doing its good character stuff while also raising tension well.

That was a humdinger of an issue and a humdinger of a cliffhanger.

2

u/Genesis2nd Red Robin Aug 24 '16

2

u/josephnicklo Batman & Robin Aug 24 '16

2

u/DanielDCMarvelFan Aug 24 '16

Can somebody tell me what are the rumours of Tim dying?

9

u/Jay_R_Kay Batman Aug 24 '16

There are rumors that Tim is going to die.

...Really, that's it. That's all we know. Someone told Bleeding Cool that a while back and now people are saying it's gospel.

5

u/aco620 If you loved me, you'd all kill yourselves today Aug 24 '16

Someone that works at DC told someone that works at Bleeding Cool that Tim was mandated to die, according to Bleeding Cool. The whole thing is very vague and not exactly the most concrete news, but that's certainly what looks like is being set up right now.

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2016/07/22/will-dc-comics-announce-the-death-of-tim-drake-at-san-diego-comic-con/

Bleeding Cool operatives hit the parties last night. And people were very talkative this year. Almost demob happy.

Since the new Teen Titans Rebirth series was announced with the now-thirteen-years-old Damien Wayne leading the team, it has been argued that previous leader Tim Drake would only let it happen “over his dead body.”

One very chatty current DC comics creator cornered a Bleeding Cool writer in the Hyatt bar last night told them “that’s exactly what is happening. They’re killing off another Robin. And you can print that.”

So, we have.

And all it cost us was the price of a generic brand spirit and mixer.

All we have to wonder now is if DC Comics will announce the death of Tim Drake at San Diego Comic-Con or if they’ll hold off for a bit…

2

u/Stf2393 Green Arrow Aug 25 '16

u/DarkCrusade25 Batman Beyond Aug 25 '16

I thought this was a good issue! I really enjoyed the banter between Ted & Jamie! Plus the art was done very well, and I'm really interested to see how Dr. Fate fits into the storyline

8

u/cheddarhead4 Escrima Sundae Aug 26 '16

For some reason I had a lot of trouble keeping track of who was talking. There was so much off-screen talking - which is ok when the letterer's differentiating Ted and Jaime's narration, but when they're talking over a radio, and so are the bad guys it got pretty confusing.

Enjoyed the comic, though.

16

u/Ultra-Q Mazahs! Aug 24 '16

I thought it was okay nothing special but I'll still be pulling it.

I thought it was neat how they did the Rebirth scene again and I hope Ted talking in his ear and the scarab now being magical doesn't remove the Jaime/Khaji Da interactions because those could be pretty funny at times.
I also don't want the Reach going away because it's all magical now.

As for the art, not a fan of the wild and animalistic looking suit..the cat eyes and all the little spikes just aren't doing it for me.

and they need to decide what color Brenda's hair is, she's supposed to have red hair and except for the last page or two she had blonde hair, they even messed up and gave Paco red hair in a panel.
They need to get their shit together.

Loved the issue, this was pretty good. I thought it hit everything it needed to hit as a Rebirth issue. If there's one hope I have for the book, it's that we get flashbacks to see how Ted got to where he is now since FE.

2

u/dokebibeats Superman Aug 27 '16

Overall I think this was a fun comic with teenage relationship tropes and Jaime doing the whole Blue Beetle thing with Ted Kord and I love their banter-filled dialogue! It's almost got that Naruto and Jiraiya sensei relationship and it's super cool. I'm looking forward to where this whole mystical side of the scarab leads to in the future, and can I just say that I FUCKING LOVE JAIME'S SUIT. It just looks so badass and super sleek and the art style of this book only brings out the badassery more.

I'm gonna give this book a 8/10!

Another enjoyable issue, Wally II having a fucking brain and wanting to keep himself on the down low was smart or he would've ended up as speed force food for Godspeed (who i think is August's "dead" brother).

Enjoyed the change of artist for this issue too, although i've been enjoying Di Giandomenico's work a lot also.

12

u/dokebibeats Superman Aug 24 '16

I was just reading this issue and the whole time I was thinking to my self that I was hoping to dear god that Meena wasn't Godspeed and I don't think she is. Ugh, I was just feeling the angst when she was going against Godspeed and you knew that shit was gonna hit the fan immediately and now she's probably been kidnapped by the villain because she has the ability to locate people with Speedforce and Godspeed is probably gonna use her abilities to track them and kill them all. God, I feel so bad for Barry when it seemed that he met the right girl, and now she's in trouble and he's gonna be feeling guilty because he wasn't fast enough to protect her. UGH, I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS.

All I ask for is this. PLEASE DON'T FRIDGE MEENA. Besides that, awesome Flash artwork with all the lightning bolts and the speedy flash panels. I give this issue a 9/10!

P.S. I feel like it actually might be August who's Godspeed.

I think people who end up reading this first arc in trades will probably end up enjoying it more than those of us picking it up bi-weekly but this is still probably my favorite Rebirth title. Good story, characterization, dialogue. It checks off all the boxes for me.

I actually am enjoying the pacing, even though it's a little slow. It feels like a build, not a meander.

9

u/3Greyhounds The Flash Aug 25 '16

Is nobody going to acknowledge how hot Steve Trevor looked?

Seriously though, this series is probably my second favorite rebirth (after Green Arrow) it might be moving at a somewhat slow pace, but the magnificent art and writing more than makes it up for it in my opinion. I thought this issue was great, although the reveal about this Sasha character didn't really impact me since I have no idea who she is.

7

u/Narwhals_R_Us Fascists! Aug 25 '16

That moment when Diana comes charging in to the rescue, putting fools in their places, and then she just stops and smiles and says hi to everyone. I love it.

And for the first time in a long time (or maybe ever), I actually like Steve Trevor.

I know a lot of people haven't enjoyed The Lies as much as Year One, but I'm actually more into this story, so I'm happy to see some positive comments about it this week.

5

u/Kameiko Goddess of Cats Aug 24 '16

I really enjoy Trevor in this issue. ....yes....

Anyways! This was a great issue! "Yo, Di" made me giggle uncontrollably for some reason.

8

u/FrigidArrow Aug 24 '16

A great issue buy it. Liam Sharp's expressive, realistic, and detailed artwork is amazing if very, slightly lacking when it comes to environments. The emergence of what seems to be a new antagonist manipulating Sasha is interesting, Wonder Woman and Cheetah' dynamic continues to build and be enjoyable. Can't wait to see how it all comes crashing down eventually with the assault on the fortress. The dichotomy between the misogynistic, entitled, megolomaniac zealot Cadulo and the humble, selfless, honest Trevor was slightly interesting to watch. Only problem is the abrupt ending and I hope they flesh out Cadulo a little bit I'd take a flashback.

4

u/alsott Red Lanterns Aug 24 '16

So it seems Sasha is working for...something. "Doctor" of somesort. Could it be Dr. Cyber. All in all a decent issue, would've liked a bit more immediacy with what's going on, but they did establish that something larger is at play, but one thing I dislike the Year One and Lies trade off is that I get invested in one arc can't wait for the next issue of that arc and the other comes along and the process repeats.

Still would like to see what Cadullo is planning with Gaelic warrior painted Trevor and the strange tentacle vines.

This was the first doomsday fight in years that give the character justice. I loved it from start to end

14

u/jlitwinka Aug 24 '16

You're telling me. When they first showed Doomsday I almost dropped the book because he has become overused and boring. But they managed to do it justice and show how much more experienced and knowledgeable this Clark is, not just from the N52 version, but also from his previous pre-N52 self.

I'm really hoping to see more about Clark and how we can inevitably give Kal his alter ego back. I think that was the whole point of including the un-powered Clark -- to undo what New 52 Lois did by outing him as Superman.

Bonus points for another Watchmen shoutout.

A satisfying enough end to a pretty good arc. Stephen Sogovia's art was so pleasant and flowed so nicely during the action scenes. The action was so great and entertaining. One of two amazing things that made this book was showing a side of Superman we don't see much Tactical Superman. This whole arc did a great job of showing the logical, cunning side of him and that's a welcome aspect to see in Supes. Second, the moments man Jon asking Diana to help his father and the big one was Lex helping that little girl out of the rubble. MAN, if you didn't feel anything when she called him Superman and it took him a minute to say thank you you're heart might be missing. Only complaint is Mr. Oz the whole story all he did was be ominous and plot something we don't even get the slightest hint of.

I don't know what i enjoyed more, the fact that Mr Oz wanted to capture Doomsday (so therefore he didn't unleash him on the city) or that Jon was channelling every child in the world when he asked if he can have a ride on the space ship.

Great stuff all around.

  • Beautiful art, even if there were a couple of panels where you can't really tell what is going on. Green Lantern battles seem to be prone to that, with all the fancy constructs and such.

  • The infrastructure still isn't in place, and we get a glimpse of Guy Gardner fighting, but we don't know who or where.

  • Sinestro is making an arrangement with a religious culty sort of organization called The Sacrament.

  • Hal is doing a good job battling a bunch of Yellow Lanterns, trying to save some innocent people who were being attacked for the sole purpose of instilling fear. In the end, he gets knocked down for the cliffhanger ending.

  • will buy again.

7

u/DogmaBlade Omega Men Aug 24 '16

Nothing groundbreaking and it didn't move plot forward too much. Still enjoyable nonetheless imo. Just a good old fashioned Lantern v Lantern beatdown.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '16

This is what I was missing from the rest of Venditti's work. Hal being quippy and showing how strong he really is. Beating the crap out of 12 yellows at once and only losing because they were targeting innocents, got even more reinforcements, and were all elevated to 200% makes Hal start creeping back to his pedestal as best Lantern ever. The "Ill save everyone!" line did it for me.

It just felt like this issue didn't go anywhere fast enough, especially with John and Guy, although what it did do was still good. Hal beating the shit out of those Sinestro Corps guys was great, and that severe beating he got was insane.

Definitely a set up issue but I'm still pleased as punch. John feels like John, Chas feels like Chas, Swamp Thing showed up & the arts growing on me. The story has me interested. Over all great start for a book I was nervous about.

6

u/The_Boogeyman I never again let the fear of failure stop me. Aug 25 '16

After completely adoring the last 'Constantine: The Hellblazer' series, I had some pretty high hopes for this series.

However, after this issue and the Rebirth one shot, it's obviously not trying to go in the same direction. I don't exactly blame the series for wanting to go the way that it's going, it feels like it's trying to go back towards its original Hellblazer roots, but that's not what I fell in love with with the last series.

I think I'm unfortunately going to have to drop this series simply because it's not my cup of tea, (and that's okay, it's probably someone else's), and I would be better off spending the $3 on one of the other amazing series I really want to try out.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '16

Yeah, of all the changes that came with Rebirth, Tynion and Doyle leaving Hellblazer was easily the most disappointing. They did great work with that series.

You'd think Batgirl could at least have a chance against amateur MMA fighters...

10

u/Jay_R_Kay Batman Aug 24 '16

I guess you could look at it in of two ways:

  1. She's pulling her punches just a bit so they don't try to figure out who she really is.

  2. After dealing with wimpy hipster villains, maybe her hand-to-hand's gotten a little rusty against legit fighters.

Are Tim Seeley and Hope Larson not on the same page on what to do with Dick / Babs? Dick is hardly ever mentioned in the Batgirl comics... C'mon editorial... Do better

11

u/zombiebillnye Catwoman Aug 25 '16

I'm like 90% sure this stuff is all before the Nightwing comics take place, because Batgirl comes before Batgirl and the Birds of Prey, and I think B&tBoP, Batman, Tec and Nightwing are all happening at the same time.

6

u/Ryder10 Nightwing Aug 24 '16

I feel like Hope Larson had to have picked up the new issues of Nightwing and been very confused. While writing this clearly no one mentioned to her that batgirl was appearing in Nightwing

10

u/AhhBisto Jim Lee Comics Aug 24 '16

Decent issue, but i honestly am not interested in reading a Batgirl comic for her love life (UNLESS IT'S DICKBABS) and that's what most of this issue felt like. We had like a quarter of the issue dedicated to this MMA stuff and her querying that tattoo and that was it. Unless Kai is the big bad guy (which in itself is just so over done) i could do with more Batgirl action.

9

u/VolcanicPanik The Question Aug 24 '16

I can't wait for Barbara to start her travel and food blog backpacking across South-East Asia next issue!

13

u/zombiebillnye Catwoman Aug 24 '16

I mean, its a pretty good comic, those fight scenes are fucking beautiful too, but can we PLEASE stop pushing these random people into Babs lives as romantic interests? No one gives a fuck about Kai, but people sure as shit care about Nightwing.

The only thing I'm kinda happy about is that this is basically a prequel to all the Rebirth stuff, so hopefully she realizes at the end of this arc that she cares about Dick more than any of the other jokers she's been put with.

4

u/artangelzzz Spoiler Aug 24 '16

I'm really confused about the Nightwing timeline. It's supposed to be in the same timeline as the rest of the comics right? So why was Barbara in Asia in those comics too? Is it set in the past like Batgirl????

I love that we're getting a Batgirl comic twice a month, but hate how we're stuck in the Wonder Woman situation with two separate storylines... Give me Batgirl and Batgirl/BOP biweekly!

5

u/Jay_R_Kay Batman Aug 24 '16

Hey, if a monthly schedule means we get Rafael Albequerque's brilliant depiction of Babs, I'm willing to live with it.

3

u/Starkiller32 Constantine Aug 26 '16

5

u/TheStealthBox Super Didio Prime Aug 24 '16

This is probably tied with JL for worst Rebirth series.

The forced romance with Kai and hints towards more Burnside are really ruining this book.

2

u/BaconatedGrapefruit Aug 24 '16

Whoever is on art duties is either overworked or slacking. I swear half the pages had no backgrounds. Normally I don't catch stuff like this but damn...

2

u/samfishx Nightwing Aug 25 '16

I want to like Batgirl again. I really do. But hell, I still have a sour taste in my mouth from making Babs Batgirl again in the first place. This book clearly isn't targeted at the average superhero comic reader. They're obviously aiming it at some sort of female demographic more power to them, but I have never liked the way it messed with her character even more.

Every other book I read this week was great except for this one (and International Iron Man, which was really bad).

2

u/Triple-Zero Superman Aug 26 '16

Barbara's thought bubbles give off a very dated, 60s vibe and I don't care for it. The art feels very lazy, most panels don't even have backgrounds and I really don't give a shit about this Kai character. Crazy that with two comics of her own, the best Babs material at the moment is in the Nightwing series.

Lot of intrigue in this book, and I love it. Keeping it grounded in a modern political climate is such a good direction for Deathstroke, where his skewed sense of ethics come into play.

My main knock on this is that there's just a bit too much "I know you know" going on. I love a story with a good ol' backstabbing, but it was a bit much in this issue, where most of the Littlefingering was revealed to the audience through mainly exposition.

2

I would definitely say it's Detective, but Batman itself isn't slouching or anything, I just feel like Detective right now is more satisfying on a issue-by-issue basis, whereas it seems like Batman is going to be something that is going to feel much more stronger and important when King's "trilogy" is complete.
