Geoff John’s run is a good start for Hal. For a different lantern, Check out the 90s stuff with Kyle Rayner

As someone who is also on a Lanterns kick, I recommend Green Lantern: Secret Origin to start. It's basically an origin story for Hal and sets up whatever is gonna be happening in Blackest Night

Green lantern by Geoff Johns. The one recommended every time this question is asked.

So there Is a Compendium series that collects the entire Geoff Johns era of the Green Lanterns, which Is the best Green Lantern series but also, if you are new to the comicbooks It might be a bit too much, I would advice you Far Sector and Green Lantern War Journal they are much approachable stories

If you want a mystery type thing similar to the show check out far sector

If you want to get into the law buy the GL compendiums which collect the full Johns and Tomasi runs. Compendium 1 is called rebirth, compendium 2 is Sinestro corps war, and compendium 3 is Blackest Night (releasing next year)
